Canva skills are what people hiring graphic designers increasingly want to see

BY and Andrew Thompson For our 2025 Where the Design Jobs Are report, Fast Company looked at which design tools were being mentioned in job listings across various disciplines, and how that has changed over time. With graphic design, there were a couple of particularly interesting findings. Asks for Blender expertise grew 82% year over year (read about that trend here), while requests for proficiency with Canva went up 72%. When we put Canva on our cover in 2022, some people in the design world viewed it as borderline heresy. The easy-to-use app had become extremely popular because it promised that anyone could be a designer—a notion that naturally upset some trained designers. But Canva's templated approach to designing everything from social media posts to T-shirts took off with the masses, and it spilled over to professionals. The working thesis is that Canva, having won over marketing design department has started reporting to marketing in many companies.) Players of SPFL club left ‘appalled' by incident after final whistle that left young supporter needing medical treatment

SHOCKING SCENES Players of SPFL club left 'appalled' by incident after final whistle that left young supporter needing medical treatment Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) PLAYERS of an SPFL club were 'appalled' last night after an incident following a Premier Sports Cup tie left a young supporter requiring medical treatment. Partick Thistle moved two points clear at the top of Group B with a 2-0 win over Queen of the South at Firhill on Tuesday night. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The incident took place after the game at Firhill Credit: Kenny Ramsay The Jags are now in the driving seat to progress to the next stage after another impressive evening for Mark Wilson's side. But the third consecutive League Cup win was marred by shocking scenes after full-time. Both clubs have confirmed that Police Scotland are dealing with an incident which left the young supporter injured. It's being widely suggested online that young Queen of the South fans were targeted and had their drum nicked by Thistle supporters. It's claimed one of the Queen of the South fans sustained a head injury in the altercation. The individual was treated by Partick Thistle's medical team inside the stadium and the club have since admitted that players and staff were shocked by the incident. A statement read: "Players and officials of Partick Thistle were appalled at the incident that occurred after the final whistle in last night's game with Queen of the South at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill. "We thank the group of home and away fans that came to the assistance of the young visiting supporter in the aftermath and also thank our first team medical staff who applied treatment in the club's physio department. "Queen of the South have provided an update this morning and we are pleased to hear that the young person involved is doing well and echo their wishes for a speedy recovery. "The matter is now in the hands of Police Scotland." A Queen of the South statement read: "The club are disappointed with the incident that took place after our cup tie against Partick Thistle last night. "We are delighted to hear that those involved are ok and wish them a speedy recovery. Supporters should be allowed to follow their team safely and we are pleased that the matter is now being handled by Police Scotland. "Thank you to all the Partick and Queens fans who helped in the aftermath and to Partick Thistle FC for their assistance." Province shifts Hwy. 11 passing lane project into high gear

The province is moving ahead with a new passing lane pilot project on Highway 11 between North Bay and Temiskaming Shores. Hwy. 11 to expand to three lanes near North Bay The Ontario government is moving ahead with a new passing lane pilot project on Highway 11 between North Bay and Temiskaming Shores. The three-lane highway has a centre passing lane that changes direction every few kilometres. The idea is to make highway travels safer for northern Ontario drivers. The province announced Friday morning it awarded a contract to AECOM Canada Ltd. to begin the environmental assessment and design work on the 2+1 highway, as it's known. 'We know it's a model that works,' said Mark Wilson, a member of the 'Going The Extra Mile Safety' group (GEMS). 'It suits really well for northern Ontario and the traffic volumes that we have here.' The design is a continually alternating three-lane highway with a barrier between the opposing lanes. The GEMS group has been pushing for the project for a number of years. In December 2021, Ontario Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney said completing the roadway will cost between $1 million and $3 million per kilometre. CTV News contacted the Ministry of Transportation for a comment on the project's status. A spokesman said no one was available. 'We're making great progress on our plan to build Ontario as we continue to work closely with communities and safety advocates to build a safer transportation network,' Mulroney said in a news release. Statistics show the 2+1 roads have reduced fatalities between 55 and 80 per cent while also improving travel times. The province identified two 15-kilometre stretches of the highway for the proposed project: between Sand Dam Road to Ellesmere Road and between Highway 64 to Jumping Caribou Lake Road. The locations were selected based on a site selection criteria report from the MTO, which included representation from the GEMS group. 'It needs to be part of a network and needs to be another model that we can use in Ontario between smaller two-lane rural highways,' said Wilson. The idea comes from Sweden. The country had about 3,000 kilometres of 2+1 roads as of early 2022 and it continues to build more. In 2021, Mulroney told reporters that once the design phase is complete, it will take between three to four years to build. 'We're really pleased and happy to see it move forward,' said Wilson. Once completed, Highway 11 will be the first 2+1 highway pilot project in North America.

Nova Scotia-Maine ferry sees ‘significant drop' in Canadian bookings

The CAT Ferry is pictured in Yarmouth, N.S., on June 5, 2025. (Jonathan MacInnis/CTV Atlantic) Bookings on the Nova Scotia-Maine ferry have increased so far this month, though not as many Canadians are on board. Bay Ferries Limited (BFL) says 24,613 bookings for The CAT had been made as of Tuesday, compared to 19,308 on June 12. However, Bay Ferries says there has a 'significant drop' in Canadian passenger bookings, which is a major factor in its overall year-to year booking decline. This time last year there were more than 30,000 booked for travel on The CAT. 'We are pleased to see this year's bookings going up as the year progresses, despite significant headwinds as many Canadians are choosing not to travel to the United States,' said Mark Wilson, BFL's chief executive officer, in a Friday news release. 'We remain committed to welcoming passengers from around the world on this unique transportation link between New England and the Maritimes.' Wilson hosted Maine Gov. Janet Mills on the ferry from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor, Maine, last month. She went on to visit both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick to encourage Maritimers to visit her state. 'Having received such strong support from the Government of Nova Scotia over the years, we are grateful that Governor Mills took the time to experience this ocean connection to her state,' Wilson added. The CAT has completed 37 round trips so far this year. Seven round trips were cancelled due to poor weather conditions in May and June. The sailing season started on May 15, with the service operating five days per week until June 18. Daily service began the next day and will last until Sept. 22. The ferry will then operate five days a week from Sept. 25 to the end of the season on Oct. 15. BFL says it will continue to release monthly traffic reports this season, with the next one expected no later than mid-August. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FORMER Celtic wonderkid Tony Watt has found his EIGHTH Scottish club after penning a two-year deal with Partick Thistle. The move reunites him with former Parkhead pal Mark Wilson, who recently took over the Firhill hotseat with Alex Rae as his former No 2. But he's struggled to settle anywhere - with Thistle set to be his SIXTEENTH club in all. The Scottish clubs in order are: Airdrie, Celtic, Hearts (loan), St Johnstone, Motherwell, Dundee Utd, St Mirren, Motherwell (loan). Away from Scotland he's had spells in Belgium Lierse, Standard Liege and OH Leuven and a time in the England game with Blackburn Rovers, Charlton and Cardiff City. There was also a short stint in Bulgaria at CSKA Sofia. Thistle wrote in a statement: "Partick Thistle FC is pleased to announce the signing of Tony Watt on a two-year deal, subject to Scottish FA clearance. "Tony joins the Jags having most recently been at Dundee United where he spent three-and-a-half seasons, played 86 games and scored 20 goals as well as having loan spells at St Mirren and Motherwell. "He was a key contributor to a Championship title win during his time at Tannadice, recording 13 goals and nine assists as the Tangerines were promoted in 2023/24. "Watt's career began at Airdrie United where he broke into the first team as a 16-year-old before being signed by Celtic in January 2011, going on to become an SPL winner and Champions League goalscorer during his spell at Parkhead. "He subsequently spent time in Belgium, England and Bulgaria, earning a cap for his country while playing for Blackburn Rovers in 2016. BRIAN GRAHAM Partick Thistle hero on his worst day in football & bust-up with Neil Lennon "The 31-year-old has made more than 300 appearances in Scottish football that also included stops at Hearts, St. Johnstone and Motherwell before his time at Tannadice and now arrives at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill to continue building on that tally. Thistle Head Coach Mark Wilson said: 'To secure a player like Tony is a real coup for the club. I played with him briefly when he was a youngster at Celtic and he's gone on to have a distinguished career since then. 'He arrives here as a very experienced player who had an excellent season the last time he was playing at this level and we want to give him the platform to perform like that again.'
