Former Inter Milan striker Marko Arnautovic has joined perennial Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade on a short-term deal. According to Calciomercato, the veteran center-forward has signed a one-year contract at Stadion Rajko Mitic. This move is the fulfillment of the 36-year-old's childhood dream. Ex Inter Milan Ace Marko Arnautovic Joins Red Star Belgrade Despite captaining Austria's national team, Arnautovic has Serbian origins. Furthermore, he fluently speaks Serbian and maintains strong ties to the country through his family. Meanwhile, his transfer to Red Star is not only a sentimental homecoming. It should also help the 1991 European Cup winners gain a foothold in the Champions League next term. It's also worth noting that Red Star tried to sign Arnautovic last summer. However, the deal was not feasible. Arnautovic made 65 appearances for Inter and won two Serie A titles, an Italian Super Cup, and a Champions League over two spells.

Revealed: What prevented Marko Arnautovic from joining Man United in 2022 after they had 'reached an agreement'
Marko Arnautovic was reportedly extremely close to joining Manchester United in 2022 but was not allowed to leave for the Red Devils, according to his agent. Arnautovic, now 36, was on the cusp of a move to Old Trafford that year but never ended up leaving Bologna, who he was playing for at the time. The Austrian had enjoyed previous fruitful spells at both Stoke City and West Ham United, making him no stranger to English football. However, few had expected for such a big club to come calling for him at the time given he moved from West Ham to Chinese side Shanghai SIPG in 2019. After two years in China, he returned to Europe after signing a deal with Serie A outfit Bologna - and caught the attention of United just a year later. Arnautovic had emerged as a shock target for United as Erik ten Hag looked to strengthen his attack. United saw Arnautovic as a cut-price option but decided not to meet Bologna's demands for the Austria striker after having an initial £7.5m bid rejected. However, his brother, who acts as his agent, has now revealed that Bologna would not allow him to leave, according to Football Italia. He said: 'At the time, I had various offers for him. Marko was very, very close to joining Manchester United. 'We had reached an agreement, but Bologna didn't want to let him leave at that time.' While he opted to stay at Bologna, Arnautovic then joined their Serie A rivals Inter in 2023. He initially spent a season on loan before making his move permanent and playing his part in their run to this season's Champions League final. However, the Austrian now finds himself without a club and is a free agent with the 2025-26 season beginning in a matter of weeks. The former Premier League winger will be hoping to find a new club ahead of next summer's World Cup, which he is likely to feature in should Austria qualify. The team have two wins from two in their World Cup qualifying group and are on course to make the tournament under the guidance of former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick.

Inter formulate new plan for Hojlund with Manchester United
Inter are still keen on striking a deal with Manchester United for former Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund during the summer transfer window, but are left exploring the possibility of signing the 22-year-old on loan as things stand. The Nerazzurri are looking to reinforce their attacking department after letting both Marko Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa leave on free transfers this summer, while Mehdi Taremi, currently stranded in Iran, will also be allowed to leave if an appropriate offer comes in. Advertisement La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Inter are moving closer to a deal with Parma for youngster Ange-Yoan Bonny, who has recently worked under the new Nerazzurri head coach Cristian Chivu, and that Hojlund remains the preferred option to rotate with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez in the starting line-up. (Photo by) United's asking price and Inter's demands for Hojlund According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, United remain adamant that Hojlund will not leave the club for anything under €45m this summer. Any less would represent a capital loss for the Premier League giants, who paid over €75m plus up to €10m to sign him from Atalanta two years ago. Advertisement While United are adamant on their €45m valuation, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that Inter have slightly less than that to spend on a new striker this summer, which leaves them looking at the possibility of signing Hojlund on loan with an option or obligation to buy. (Photo by) Sunday's report claims that the Nerazzurri will push to sign Hojlund on an initial loan deal, including a significant fee, with an option to buy in the summer of 2026. The Pink Paper suggests that Inter could tempt United with a large loan fee, which they hope will then decrease the cost of an option to buy clause the following summer. Reports elsewhere indicate that Hojlund is keen on a return to Serie A and keen on the idea of joining Inter this summer, after a disappointing two seasons in the Premier League with United.

(Photo by) The Austrian star will become a free agent in less than a month. Meanwhile, his chances of staying in Serie A look bleak after he turned down a move to Torino last January. Indeed, the Granata tried to sign him as a short-term replacement for the injured Duvan Zapata. Yet, he refused a switch to Turin to stay at San Siro. Marco Baroni's appointment at Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino could see the Granata reignite their interest in the veteran striker. In addition to Torino, Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce could offer Arnautovic a contract this summer.

'Man Utd tried to sign me several times – I knew they were still at the top'
Marko Arnautovic had enjoyed six seasons of Premier League football before Manchester United came in for him after a successful spell at Bologna, but the Austrian rejected a move to Old Trafford Marko Arnautovic already admitted he was subject to numerous overtures from Manchester United - but decided to decline an offer to join the Premier League giants. The Inter Milan forward is gearing up for the Champions League final on Saturday, where the Italian giants take on Paris Saint-Germain. A win for the Nerazzurri would see Arnautovic capture his second UCL medal with the Serie A side, having been part of their last triumph in the competition in the 2009/10 season. The Austria international played just three times during his first stint with Inter but made a name for himself during his four-year spell with Stoke City. His performances led him to a move to West Ham, where he hit double digits in goals in both seasons he spent in London before earning a big-money transfer to Chinese side Shanghai Port. A return to Italy beckoned in 2021 with Bologna as Arnautovic, who was 33 at the time, enjoyed a career-best season with 14 goals in 33 games before following that up with 10 goals in 22 games in his second campaign. With that came summer interest from United, who had just appointed Erik ten Hag. Reports of the forward potentially arriving at Old Trafford weren't well received by sections of fans, with the club then reportedly pulling out due to the feedback they received despite tabling a bid worth £7.6 million. However, Arnautovic's agent set the record straight and claimed that it was his player who turned down a move to United, with the forward himself backing up the story in 2022. " Manchester United tried to sign me several times," Arnautovic told Laola1. "And it was a difficult decision to stay in Italy because my family wanted to return to England. "For me, it's clear that the Red Devils remain at the top of the universe. And Bologna, as a name, are not. But that's fine. Here everything is calm, you have time for yourself and no stress. This is only good for me." The interest in signing the forward was due to the possible departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was said to have wanted to depart Old Trafford after failing to qualify for the Champions League. While the Portuguese legend remained in Manchester beyond the summer, his relationship with Ten Hag deteriorated, leading to the striker conducting a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan in which he slammed his then-manager. "He doesn't respect [me] the way I should deserve [to be respected]," the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said of the Dutchman. "But it is what it is. This is why probably, the game against Tottenham, I left. "Excuses, I see as excuses. I saw many things that, I don't want to criticise him. He can have [a] different opinion than me. They choose the players that they think is better for the team. I respect that but excuses all the time you know; the excuses have short legs, cannot excuse all the time, which is things that don't make sense." Ronaldo eventually left for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in January 2023 after his United contract was ripped up shortly after his interview. Fast-forward two years, and the 40-year-old's time in the Middle East looks to be coming to an end after a social media post sparked doubts over his future. After Al-Nassr's last game of the season, where they lost 3-2 to Al-Fateh, Ronaldo posted a snap of himself on the pitch with a caption that read: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
