NYC airports face steep increase in flight cancellations this summer
These airports are definitely not ready for takeoff. Travelers are faced with a spike in flight cancellations this summer, compared to last year — and NYC's already unpopular airports are some of the worst offenders, new data showed. Flight tracker FlightAware crunched the numbers — and found that the cancellation rate is up about 29%, CBS News reported. Advertisement 5 Airports have reported a spike in flight cancellations compared to last year. REUTERS Between the week of Memorial Day and mid-July, the return-to-gate rate jumped from 1.4% in 2024 to 1.8% this year. That's despite nearly 256,000 fewer — about 18% — flights having been scheduled for this year's peak season, compared to last. Advertisement And of all the airports in the country, the less-than-holy trinity Big Apple flyers are forced to contend with are being called out as some of worst offenders. The much-ballyhooed 'new' LaGuardia Airport was the 5th worst, and perennially unpleasant John F. Kennedy International Airport was the 9th — while personnel-issue-plagued Newark Liberty International Airport came close behind at number 10. 5 New York City airports have some of the worst cancellation rates in the country. Markus Mainka – 5 Summer travel has been a hassle, especially at New York City airports. REUTERS Advertisement LaGuardia Airport has canceled about 5% of flights so far this summer — a 65% increase from last year. This has sunk its on-time performance rate down 6.1%. JFK Airport has canceled about 3% of flights this season — a 42% increase from 2024. Advertisement And over in New Jersey, Newark has cancelled about 3% of flights taking off this summer — a 28% jump from last year. The top three offenders were further south: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Washington D.C., Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia. However, not all the airports in the country are scrambling. Some have actually decreased their cancellation rates compared to this time last summer. 5 Between the week of Memorial Day and mid-July, the cancellation rate jumped from 1.4% in 2024 to 1.8% this year. REUTERS 5 However, some airports have actually decreased their cancellation rates compared to this time last summer. AP Miami International Airport's cancellation rate has dropped 40% with on-time performance up 7.3%. Just up the road, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has reported a cancellation rate that is 25% lower than last year, with on-time performance up 5.6%. Advertisement And if your flight isn't cancelled, but you have to drop out of the trip for another reason, you can just sell it to another lucky traveler. Nonrefundable vacations can leave thwarted trippers thousands out of pocket — and some are turning to increasingly popular online marketplaces to find someone to fill their seat. These sites allow sellers to post nonrefundable flights, room bookings or packages they can no longer use, and eager buyers can scoop them up — often at dramatic discounts, typically between 20% and 30% off the original price.

American Airlines adds 2 new domestic destinations — here's where you can fly to now
Summer is heating up, but American Airlines is already making winter vacation plans. The carrier has announced an expanded schedule for the winter season, with seven new routes and two new destinations. The two new destinations are Santa Maria Airport (SMX) in Santa Maria, California, and Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Sun Valley, Idaho. 'American is focused on giving our customers the most options to pick the perfect vacation destination, and now there are even more ways to turn travel dreams into reality' Jason Reisinger, American's Managing Director of Global Network Planning, said. Santa Maria will get a nonstop route from Phoenix. There will also be expanded service to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, Florida; Missoula Montana Airport (MSO) in Missoula, Montana; and Santa Fe Regional Airport (SAF) in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Sun Valley to Phoenix: Daily on a CRJ700 from Dec. 18 through April 6, 2026. Ticket sales for the new routes began June 30, so travelers can start thinking about winter plans now. Most of the new destinations are popular beach or mountain destinations already served by popular airlines. Santa Maria, however, is only served by Allegiant Air with twice-weekly flights to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas, per The Points Guy. United was the last major airline to serve Santa Maria, with regional flights to San Francisco that ended in 2016, according to schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. On the Chicago-Missoula and Chicago-Sun Valley routes, American's only competition is United. The mountains of Idaho are pictured. American is trying to position itself as the go-to carrier for regional and seasonal travel. Jannik Schneider – American Airlines has been trying to get into the market of smaller domestic destinations in recent years, having added Provo Airport (PVU) in Utah in 2024, and McClellan-Palomar Airport (CLD) in Carlsbad, California, earlier this year. Focusing on smaller leisure hubs is part of the carrier's goal to be seen as the go-to airline for seasonal leisure travel. American has 'opted to dig more into smaller regional airports that show signs of demand to and from the area during specific windows,' Katy Nastro, a travel expert at Going, a travel app and deals newsletter, told AFAR. 'Sun Valley and Fort Myers are two different but similar examples of just that. This showcases their bet on popular skiing and sun locations. For example, Fort Myers has shown the biggest growth in scheduled seats year over year, according to Cirium analytics. American is trying to ride that wave of growth and interest.'

Terrified plane passengers write notes to loved ones as Boeing plummets 25,000 feet in minutes
A Boeing passenger plane plummeted more than 25,000 feet in just 10 minutes — leaving some of the nearly 200 onboard unconscious, and others sending heart-wrenching goodbyes to their loved ones. The Spring Airlines Japan flight from Shanghai to Tokyo on Monday night was cruising at 36,000 feet with 191 passengers and crew when it suddenly dropped to just under 10,500 feet, according to officials, blaming an unspecified mechanical issue. AirTrain fares are getting a huge cut this summer to battle horrible traffic and travel woes
Travelers going in and out of New York City will get a summer treat. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is slashing AirTrain fares to John F. Kennedy International Airport by 50% in an attempt to reduce summer traffic congestion. Fares will drop from $8.50 to $4.25 starting June 30 and will last through Labor Day, Sept. 1. Advertisement AirTrain fares to JFK Airport will be cut by half to tackle summer traffic congestion. Markus Mainka – The half-price fare applies at both the Jamaica and Howard Beach Stations, and commuters can pay via OMNY or MetroCard. Some travelers view the AirTrain as an inconvenient way for them to get to JFK with their luggage, but the reduced fare might make them reconsider — especially as traffic from summer travel picks up. Advertisement For the second consecutive year, the Port Authority forecasts that summer passenger volume at JFK will set a new record with 18.3 million expected travelers. Port Authority Chairman Kevin O'Toole also warned of the 'busy summer construction period' at JFK. The airport is in the midst of a $19 billion renovation — the largest airport redevelopment project in the U.S., according to The Points Guy. AFP via Getty Images Advertisement The renovation, which is approaching the peak of its construction and roadway work, includes Terminals 1, 4, 6 and 8. 'We are once again asking travelers to leave their cars at home and take public transit to the airport. The discounted AirTrain fare is one of a multitude of steps we're taking to move passengers to and from JFK as quickly and reliably as possible,' O'Toole said. 'Yes, there will be some temporary inconvenience. But it's all part of building an airport our region can be proud of — for decades to come.' Advertisement Those who choose to drive are being urged to arrive three hours early and to reserve parking in advance due to limited space. Additionally, those using services like Uber or Lyft will need to meet their drivers at a remote pick-up lot to 'avoid gridlock.' Free shuttles will run to the relocated lots.
