Buchanan ‘positive' after career-best ninth

Southland rider Cormac Buchanan recorded a career-best result at the technically demanding Sachsenring in the Moto3 World Championship yesterday. Finishing ninth, just 1.5sec from victory, after an intense 20-lap battle, which included a stint in the podium positions, the 18-year-old delivered an impressive performance in unpredictable conditions throughout the German Grand Prix. "It was a positive weekend ... it was one I was really looking forward to as it's one of my favourite tracks from when I raced here with Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup three years ago," he said. "I'm satisfied for this moment, but I want more." The opening day was more favourable than expected. Friday's sessions were held in dry conditions, allowing the riders to focus on fine-tuning their setup without having to deal with the instability of a wet track. Buchanan completed both sessions with increasing pace, although he did not make it directly into Q2, instead qualifying for the Q1 playoff. Rain fell from the start, leaving the track completely wet in every session. Buchanan showed off his natural talent in the wet, dominating Q1 and advancing to Q2, where he achieved an excellent eighth on the grid, his best qualifying of the year. In yesterday's race, Buchanan made a spectacular start, moving into third place early then remaining solidly in the lead group. Finishing ninth was an important step in his progression within the Moto3 ranks. "I got a great start and was P4 by turn one and then went into third and held that for a couple of laps. I got passed by some riders and I found it difficult to come back from that straight away. "The tyre didn't feel so great even from the early laps so I had to manage that situation. I dropped down to 15th but managed to regain some positions and get back into the top 10. "I was feeling really good and ready to make a charge but unfortunately the tyres hindered that. "It was a case of bringing it home safely which I did in ninth. I'm happy enough but honestly, within myself, there's an element of disappointment as I really feel like an even better result was on the cards today and I knew I could challenge." Meanwhile, Marc Marquez proved once again why he is known as the King of Sachsenring yesterday when the Ducati rider marked his 200th MotoGP start by winning the German Grand Prix in a race that became a test of survival after only 10 riders finished, Reuters reports. Marquez's ninth MotoGP victory at the Sachsenring stretched his championship lead over brother Alex, who finished second, to 83 points while Marc's team-mate, Francesco Bagnaia, finished third to sit 147 points behind. It was a fourth straight weekend in which Marquez had won both the sprint and the race.

His brother Alex Marquez took second with Francesco Bagnaia third as only 10 riders finished, the lowest number completing a MotoGP since 2011. While the rest of the grid struggled to remain on their bikes at this notoriously tricky Sachsenring track, Marc Marquez enjoyed a dream afternoon. Setting off from pole he was never challenged, crossing the line over six seconds clear for his seventh perfect weekend of 2025 having also won Saturday's sprint. At the midway stage of the 22-race campaign Marquez leads brother Alex by 83 points in the riders' standings, with his Ducati factory teammate Bagnaia a yawning 147 off the lead. "My confidence is super high now coming here with three wins in a row and now it's four," beamed Marquez. "I have to be really concentrated for the second half of the season." His younger sibling was competing despite fracturing his left hand at the Dutch MotoGP a fortnight ago. "It's unbelievable, thanks to the doctors and everyone that I'm here," he said after his 100th MotoGP start. For the older Marquez, this was his seventh race win of the year and fourth on the trot as he tightens his grip on a seventh MotoGP world title – and first since 2019 – to draw level with the legendary Valentino Rossi. Marc Marquez celebrates 200th MotoGP win at Sachsenring

DPA/Agencies Hohenstein-Ernstthal (Germany) Six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez celebrated his 200th race in the premier class with a win at the German Grand Prix at Sachsenring on Sunday. It was his ninth win at the German GP, this time in front of a record crowd of 256,441 people. The Ducati rider claimed his seventh win this season to extend his lead in the championship standings. Marquez is widely considered one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time. Just 10 riders finished the race, marking the first time in MotoGP since the 2011 Australian Grand Prix that so few saw the chequered flag. The starting grid was already depleted, with just 18 riders starting Sunday's 30-lap Grand Prix. During the race, eight riders ultimately failed to make the finish due to crashes. Marc Marquez's brother, Alex, was injured but took an unlikely second-place finish, while Francesco Bagnaia made his way into third having come from 10th on the grid. Marquez battles back to win German GP

*Marc Marquez wins 10th sprint of season *Marquez overtakes Bezzecchi in final lap *Marquez extends championship lead to 78 points SACHSENRING, Germany: Ducati's Marc Marquez overcame a nightmare start to snatch a dramatic last-lap victory in treacherous, wet conditions to claim a record-breaking 10th sprint win of the MotoGP season at the German Grand Prix on Saturday. The Ducati rider had plummeted to fourth after going wide at turn one despite securing a seventh pole position of the season , but he mounted a masterful comeback before overtaking Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi on the final lap. Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo finished third to complete the podium while VR46 Racing's Fabio Di Giannantonio and Pramac Racing's Jack Miller rounded out the top five. The victory saw Marquez become the first rider to win 10 sprints in a season as he extended his championship lead to 78 points over his brother Alex, who finished eighth. "In the beginning of the race, I was struggling. I did a mistake on turn one, the exit on the start. And then I lost some positions," Marquez said. "But then, step-by-step I got the rhythm, like in the practice... I'm happy because we take 12 points again in the sprint. But if tomorrow is wet (during the race), we need to brake a bit more before overtaking somebody." Marquez shot off the line with what seemed like a dream getaway, only to surrender the lead immediately as he went wide on turn one and fell to fourth while Bezzecchi seized control. As Marquez looked to move up the pack, he had Di Giannantonio to contend with as the VR46 Racing rider overtook him twice in a dogged battle for fourth place. Di Giannantonio's teammate Franco Morbidelli had moved up to second but he crashed heavily on lap four and the Italian rider was thrown off his bike and sent tumbling across the gravel. Morbidelli was diagnosed with a severe contusion to the left collarbone and was taken to hospital for further checks. As Marquez picked up the pace, he battled past Di Giannantonio and then set his sights on Quartararo, who had made a brilliant start despite being seventh on the grid. But Marquez was soon setting fastest laps and he quickly found his way past Quartararo on lap nine, nearly losing control of his rear tyre before recovering his balance to stay in second. Bezzecchi still held a lead of more than a second to Marquez but the Ducati rider was determined to reel in the Aprilia as he piled the pressure on the Italian sprint leader. Like a hunter stalking his prey, Marquez closed in and waited for the right moment to pounce -- on the start-finish straight on the final lap. — Reuters

6-Time Moto GP Champion Marc Marquez Pulls Off Viral 'Aura Farming' Celebration

Germany: Marc Marquez won a bruising German MotoGP on Sunday to mark his 200th premier class start in style and stretch his lead in the world championship. "My confidence is super high now coming here with three wins in a row and now it's four," beamed Marquez. "I have to be really concentrated for the second half of the season," he added. — Enzo (@Aperta) July 13, 2025 His younger sibling was competing despite fracturing his left hand at the Dutch MotoGP a fortnight ago. "It's unbelievable, thanks to the doctors and everyone that I'm here," he said after his 100th MotoGP start. For Marquez this was his seventh race win of the year and fourth on the trot as he tightens his grip on a seventh MotoGP world title - and first since 2019 - to draw level with the legendary Valentino Rossi. Despite sunshine taking over from Saturday's rain, the race proved one of the most attritional in years with eight riders crashing and two unable to take part after coming a cropper on Saturday. The last time only 10 riders completed a MotoGP was in Australia, 14 years ago. Pole-sitter Marquez enjoyed an electric getaway from the front of the grid, in contrast to 24 hours earlier. Then, a first turn mistake had dropped him down the pack, and it wasn't until his last lap overtake of Marco Bezzecchi that he wrapped up his 10th sprint out of 11. On a dry track, Marquez quickly pulled clear of the chasing pack led by Fabio Di Giannantonio, who had set a new lap record in practice on Friday. With Marquez set fair for another demolition job - he'd pulled almost two seconds clear by lap 10 of 30 - his main danger was maintaining focus and concentration around the ultra-demanding circuit with its short straights and tight bends in the former East Germany. Others were not enjoying their afternoon at one of the toughest venues on the calendar quite so much - notably Pedro Acosta and Miguel Oliveira who both crashed out. On lap 18 Di Giannantonio and Johann Zarco also hit the deck independently at turn one. That left Bezzecchi's Aprilia chasing Marquez, a distant four-and-a-half seconds up the road. But that situation only lasted until the following lap when Bezzecchi became the latest victim of turn one. The DNF tally swelled even further with the exits of Lorenzo Savadori, Ai Ogura and former champion Joan Mir. Two riders unable to line up on Sunday were KTM-Tech 3 duo Maverick Vinales, out with a fractured shoulder after a heavy fall in qualifying, and his appendicitics-hit teammate Enea Bastianini. Also missing was Franco Morbidelli after his bone-crunching crash in Saturday's sprint. The MotoGP season moves on to Czechia next Sunday where all eyes will be on defending champion Jorge Martin. The luckless Spaniard has not finished a race this season after a series of heavy crashes, but has set his sights on Brno for his return to action.
