Sarawak to convert over 5,000km disused logging roads into village routes to boost rural access and development
KUCHING, May 23 — The Sarawak government is planning to take over former logging roads, including wooden bridges, that connect settlements in rural areas such as Baleh constituency. Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the move is to ensure better and more organised road access for residents. 'So far, there are 5,297km of logging roads that connect various rural settlements in the state. 'Of that total, 3,293km are still active logging roads, while 2,004km are no longer in use,' he said in response to a question from Nicholas Kudi Jantai (GPS-Baleh) at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) here today. Aidel said 312.8km of former logging roads have been successfully registered under the Village Roads category through the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris). 'The active logging roads stretch over 1,172.60km and unregistered roads remain under the responsibility of logging concession companies,' he explained. He said the state government is working to take over 188km of former logging roads, including the wooden bridges along those routes. He explained registering these former logging roads under Marris would allow the government to secure financial allocations for maintenance. 'This registration also allows the former logging roads to be classified either under State Roads (JRN) or Village Roads (JKPG), depending on their respective criteria and specifications,' he said. He emphasised that this initiative is a strategic move to enhance rural infrastructure and narrow the development gap between urban and interior areas. — The Borneo Post

State Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo addressing the Sarawak Legislative Assembly during question time on Friday (May 23). KUCHING: The Sarawak government plans to take over former logging roads and wooden bridges to improve connectivity to rural settlements, says state Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo. To a supplementary question, he said the state government was registering former logging roads under the Malaysian Road Records Information System (Marris). SIBU (May 22): The construction of a car park at Rumah Chinda in Rantau Panjang here is set to commence soon, said councillor Kevin Lau. He said the project is funded by the special Rural Transformation Programme allocation approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. 'I hope the project will proceed smoothly. Our team will continue to monitor the progress of the project until its successful completion,' said Lau, who is Sarawak United People's Party Bawang Assan chairman. He also reminded the longhouse's residents to exercise caution when using the area during the construction period. Meanwhile, Lau informed that maintenance works at Jalan Rantau Panjang has also commenced, funded under the Malaysia Road Records Information System (Marris) fund applied for last year by Councillor Johnny Ganing. 'As the road turning point is a bit narrow, we will seek for the culvert to be extended so that the turning can be slightly widened to increase road safety for the community there,' he said. 'No misappropriation of Marris funds by Kedah govt'
ALOR STAR: The High Court here was informed that there is no misappropriation of the Malaysian Road Record Information System (Marris) funds by the Kedah government. Lawyer Yusfarizal Yussof, instead, informed the court today that it was part of the account reconciliation process by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor's administration. "There is no issue of Marris account management flouting the law, and this was confirmed in the Auditor General's Report between 2021 and 2023. "Secondly, it is clear that the application submitted by the state government to the Finance Ministry was not meant to use Marris funds for development. "It is just a reconciliation of funds. However, many people might get confused on this matter." Yusfarizal later asked Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail whether he agreed that Sanusi had never used Marris funds for development projects. Saifuddin replied that he agreed, but with further comments based on the Auditor General's Reports. Saifuddin was testifying as a witness in the trial of a defamation suit filed by Sanusi against him. Sanusi filed the writ of summons and statement of claim through Faizi and Associates at the Alor Star High Court on Aug 3, 2023. He alleged that Saifuddin, who is also Pakatan Harapan secretary-general, defamed him by claiming he had misused RM1.6 billion in Marris funds and accused him, in his capacity as MBI chairman, of stealing rare earth element minerals in Kampung Chong, Sik. According to the statement of claim, Saifuddin allegedly made defamatory statements in a speech at the Unity Tour Programme and the launch of the Kedah Unity Machinery in Yan, at 8.30pm on July 15, 2023. The speech was part of a political campaign by PH and Barisan Nasional in the lead-up to the state elections in August 2023. Yesterday, Sanusi, who is also Jeneri assemblyman, testified in cour t that the allegations made against him had significantly damaged his reputation and political standing. Sanusi is represented by lawyers Yusfarizal, Wan Rohimi Wan Daud, Mohd Faizi Che Abu and Nur Iffah Hizwani Omar, while the defence team comprises lawyers Navpreet Singh, William Leong and Sakina Siraj. Yusfarizal informed the court that the account reconciliation process was done to correct errors made by the previous administration. "If we study the (Marris) account, it should contain RM1 billion, but the actual amount in the account was less than that. "This is because the previous administration had used the funds without proper accounting," he said. Judge Datuk Dr John Lee Kien How @ Mohd Johan Lee has set May 11 as the next hearing date. Yusfarizal said he believed that Saifuddin had agreed, albeit with comments, that Sanusi had never used the Marris funds for development. "That is the crux of the issue because the plaintiff, in his political rally, alleged that Sanusi had breached all financial governance by using the funds for development."
