Communities offered £500 VE Day grants by council

Communities in the Ribble Valley are being encouraged to take up the council's offer of free road closures and £500 grants for VE Day street parties next month. May 8 marks the 80th anniversary of victory in Europe over fascism in 1945, which led to the end of the Second World War. Some fighting continued across parts of eastern Europe further into May, including part of Latvia and Prague, then part of Czechoslovakia. Conflict also continued in the Far East until victory over Japan in August 1945. Anniversary plans in the Ribble Valley include the borough council raising the official VE Day 80 flag at 9am. The Mayor will hold a beacon lighting ceremony at Clitheroe Castle at 9.30pm, in co-ordination with others being lit nationwide, and read a tribute of remembrance. There will also be music from Clitheroe Town Band, with the hymn I Vow to Thee My Country suggested, which will be sung by those in attendance along with other songs. VE Day community events and grants were discussed at Ribble Valley Council's latest policy and finance committee meeting. Speaking at the meeting, Marshal Scott, the council's chief executive, said: 'The council has a proud record of supporting national events and commemorations. "This year's VE Day will be the 80th anniversary, so it's a special date. "We aim to do something at the castle, and we are also suggesting £500 for every parish or town council in the district.' Conservative Councillor Kevin Horkin said: 'In the past, other events have worked well. "Will this £500 grant be automatically sent to parishes, or will there be some process involved?' Mr Scott said: 'It is public money so it's got to be accounted for properly. "We can't just give it out, but we'd aim for a simple process. We're suggesting a total of £20,000 to be taken from the council's general balances. 'The government's idea is that on the May Day Bank Holiday communities can get together and have street parties. "We are planning to waive the fee for street closure procedures and trying to encourage events.' Tory Cllr Sue Bibby said she understood one local parish had, in the past, declined a similar grant. Councillors suggested the VE Day grant process be made as easy as possible, within reason, with the council pro-actively 'offering' grants to parish and town councils. This motion was agreed.

This Ex-Marine Allegedly Used His Service Record to Scam Thousands in First-Class Flights, Including This Scary Detail...

A retired United States Marine Corps veteran and Federal Air Marshal is feeling the heat after being accused of orchestrating an elaborate nearly three-year scam that involved lying about his military service to score thousands of dollars in free vacations for himself, family members and friends. Dior Jay-Jarrett of Queens, New York, has been charged with wire fraud, according to a complaint filed on March 19 by the Southern District of New York. Court documents allege Jay-Jarrett, who served in the Marines from 2013 until he was medically retired in November 2022, '[falsified] military deployment documents to obtain free travel benefits.' His scheme started in October 2021, when he got a job as an airline baggage handler. After one week on the job, Jay-Jarrett asked for eight months leave claiming he was being deployed to Kuwait. The only problem – he wasn't actually deployed to Kuwait and the documents he shared with his supervisor were signed by a military official who retired in 1997. The complaint goes on to allege Jay-Jarrett also asked the airline for extended military leave in June 2023 and July 2024, using his military status to take advantage of travel benefits including 'unlimited, free flights on Airline-1 alongside ticketed family members or travel companions.' All in all, the court says he took 'at least 130 such flights — and his family and friends approximately 20 more — at a value of nearly $70,000,' including first-class flights to Los Angeles, London and Dublin But he didn't stop there: The court's complaint says that while working for the airline, Jay-Jarrett got a job as a Federal Air Marshal, which they say he used to bypass the airport security line and fly with service weapon. Although Jay-Jarrett may have thought he had all of the details of his scheme sorted out, he didn't think his bosses would check his social media. Court documents cited a Facebook post he shared about a free five-day trip to Cabo San Lucas he took in August 2022, which he described as one of his 'favorite solo trips' as evidence supporting his bogus military leave. If he's found guilty, Jay-Jarrett could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
