Fiona Phillips' husband advises against saying one thing to Alzheimer's patients

Fiona Phillips' husband Martin Frizell has been his wife's full-time carer since her Alzheimer's diagnosis. Fiona Phillips' life was irrevocably altered following her diagnosis with early-onset Alzheimer's, but the impact has rippled through her entire family as they adapt to their new reality. ‌ Her husband, Martin Frizell, 66, opened up about feeling "isolated" and left to fend for themselves in coping with the situation. After three years of witnessing his wife's struggle with the condition, Martin has become an informal expert, learning how to manage daily challenges for the benefit of his loved ones. ‌ The ex-This Morning chief shared a crucial insight he's gained: Never say no. He believes it's more beneficial to go along with the delusions than to contradict them and cause further upset. ‌ This approach is something he picked up from extensive reading on the topic. Although he confesses it's not always easy to implement, he's been adhering to this strategy, particularly after Fiona became convinced that Martin was a kidnapper holding her captive. Now, when she's extremely agitated, he humours her by pretending to take her back to her deceased parents, when in fact they're merely circling the block. It may seem illogical, but he's found that it's the most compassionate way to handle such episodes, reports the Mirror. However, it's not without its difficulties. Martin recalls a heart-wrenching moment when Fiona looked at him and said the words he had feared the most: "You're not my husband". In Fiona's latest book, Remember When, Martin shares: "The experts say you are not supposed to challenge someone with Alzheimer's when they're saying things that are completely wrong, but it's very difficult when you are in that moment and you are just desperately hoping you might be able to get through to them. "What am I supposed to say when she says: 'You're not my husband!'?" ‌ Despite the challenges, Martin tries to maintain his approach. He continues: "Obviously it's not nice [when she says it] – but I don't feel hurt by it because I know that isn't Fiona talking: it's the illness that has taken her mind." Recent incidents involving fears of abduction have led to some of the most intense 'role-playing' yet. Martin says sometimes Fiona becomes so distressed he has to act as if they are leaving the house for a prisoner swap or ransom exchange at her parents' place. Their sons Nathaniel, 26, and Mackenzie, 23, are also drawn into these scenarios. "The textbooks say to never argue with a dementia patient, although even without the illness you could never win an argument with Fiona, so we play along," Martin explained. ‌ Martin feigns guiding her back to her parents, whom she believes are looking for her. Both of her parents suffered from Alzheimer's. Her mother passed away in 2006, and her father was diagnosed soon after and died in 2012. "Fiona and I leave the house as if I am taking her home," Martin shares. "We walk around the block as she loudly proclaims, 'I'll never forgive you for tricking me,' and passers-by stare; then we are back home again, where she goes in and greets Mackenzie as if she hasn't seen him for days. She has forgotten about her mum and dad and is happy to sit down." ‌ However, Martin, who left his role at ITV to dedicate more time to his wife of 28 years, also aims to offer comfort to others in similar situations, emphasising the importance of trusting one's own judgement. Despite his background in journalism leading him to extensively research the topic and heed expert advice, he maintains that partners must act on what feels right in the moment. ‌ "It feels as though I have read a million books and online articles about how best to cope with a partner with Alzheimer's," he reflected. Some of the advice I agree with – but other bits I'm not so sure about. I think you just have to trust your instinct and deal with whatever is thrown at you as best you can in that moment. "By trying to live up to being the perfect Alzheimer's partner, you are just heaping even more pressure on yourself when there is already so much. And every day is different." The day after Fiona's admission that he wasn't her husband, she seemed to rally, displaying glimpses of her once sharp wit. He concedes that at 64, Fiona lives solely "in the present" finding it challenging to engage in conversation as her memory often fails her and she can't recall events from "30 seconds or five minutes" prior. ‌ Remember When... graces bookshops this week. The progression of Fiona's condition is evident to readers, from the initial chapters penned over a year ago to the second-to-last update provided by Martin. He ensures, however, that Fiona has the concluding say, even though he had to jog her memory about the book for her to write the final chapter. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Beyond The Gates Recap: Martin Hires Malone to Protect His Family

Beyond The Gates Recap: Martin Hires Malone to Protect His Family originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's Beyond The Gates recap: Orphey Gene's: Kat continues to demand answers about Leslie from Jacob and the two snark back and forth (these two have such good brother/sister chemistry). They shift to discussing Leslie's case. Kat can't imagine what more information they need to trap Leslie. Jacob says they have to move beyond reasonable doubt, which frustrates Kat. Just then, Smitty enters which leads to more questions from Kat. Kat asks Smitty what's up and Jacob picks it up saying they're working on a story together. Kat quickly makes her exit and Smitty takes a seat. Jacob asks what's up with Martin. Smitty thinks Martin is still the victim but worries he's blinded by how close all of this is to his family. Jacob says, if Martin is involved, they will need to part ways. Smitty gets it but wonders if Jacob will feel the same way if/when they find out Elon is involved. Jacob says justice makes no exceptions. Jacob gets a call indicating Martin requested police protection from Malone. Smitty is furious and wants to know, right now, what his husband is hiding. Martin and Smitty's Place: Martin pretends to talk on the phone as Smitty tries to continue their discussion from the night before. After his husband walks out, Martin puts down the phone. Samantha runs downstairs to try and get past Daddy Martin. He grills her about where she's going, and she makes an ill-timed joke. Samantha apologizes but says she and Tyrell understand the concept of stranger danger. Martin reminds his daughter how her brother made such a grave error by bringing home a grown man. Samantha gets it but truly wonders what is going on with him. Martin says the world is crazy but Samantha says she will be leaving to head to the park and with that she exits. Malone arrives and they discuss the Kenneth issue which is why Martin invited him. He says his family needs police protection 24/7 without anyone knowing it's happening. Malone promises his family will be protected. Uptown: Chelsea and Madison discuss how happy they are with each other. Chelsea mentions her grandmother and how much Madison will love her. They discuss the amazing Anita Dupree which leads Madison to say she doesn't know anything about the way her family lives. Chelsea says there are many sides to Anita Dupree but mostly she is just a fabulous grandmother. She wants Madison to meet her for the first time at the Articulettes' reunion concert. The waitress comes over and knows Chelsea from social media and they take a selfie. Madison says she's stunned by how much she has accomplished and how much she helps her followers. Madison fears they will get to know each other better and Chelsea will be bored. Madison probes about Chelsea purse venture with Kat. She can't imagine dealing with so many unknowns. Chelsea is thrilled with the changes to her work and personal life. With that, they kiss and Madison suggests they go back to her place. As they get up to leave, they see Allison across the way. Chicago: Anita calls a meeting with Tracy and Sharon. She thinks they need to update their choreography. Tracy and Sharon roll their eyes when they realize has already called someone. They are annoyed she continues to make decisions for the group rather than consulting them beforehand. Anita tries to convince her bandmates that breathing new life into their classics will bring younger folks to their concert. Sharon thinks Anita is being bossy and remembers all the ways she used to tell them what to do. Anita continues to make her pitch but Sharon is done and makes her exit. Tracy tells Anita their most recent argument isn't about the choreography. Anita agrees but pushes forward saying she wants Tracy to blindly agree with her and convince Sharon of the same. Tracy wishes she could but simply can't. Anita thinks she's being made into the villain again. Tracy thinks Anita always thought she had more talent than the rest of them which meant she could make the decisions. This time, it has to be different as the success of the reunion means everything to her and Sharon. They need the money which Anita has possessed for so long. She backs up Sharon saying Anita's thinks she is the boss of them, just as Sharon returns. Anita has enough and thinks maybe she should write some checks and get gone. Tracy and Sharon counter saying they have never been gold diggers sniffing around for a payout. Anita admits most everything that happened before is her fault. She thought she could make things right and they could recreated their magic, but maybe they need to deal with the fact it's gone. Sharon and Tracy can't believe the reunion is off just because Anita says it's so. Previous Beyond The Gates Recap: Endings Chelsea can't believe Allison is there when she approaches. Anita says Tracy and Sharon can make the decision about the future of the group, while also reminding them everything is paid for. Anita knew this process would be difficult but had no clue what it would actually entail. With that, Anita throws the women out of her suite and says the concert will be just fine without her. Smitty can't believe he's spent the better part of a week trying to make the connection between Malone and Martin only to find out they're on such friendly terms. Jacob says it's time for Smitty to pin his husband down and get answers. Samantha is in the park helping a technologically inept Kenneth with his phone. Just then, Martin comes round the corner and spies what's happening. Keep checking back for the latest Beyond The Gates recaps! Conor Coady pleads for Rangers transfer green light from Leicester as star wary of ticking Champions League clock

We understand Coady is set to heap pressure on the EFL Championship club to sanction his move in time to be registered for the Champions League qualifiers Conor Coady is set to plead with Leicester City bosses to be omitted from the club's pre-season tour - in order to seal his summer switch to Rangers this week. ‌ Record Sport understands the 32-year-old hopes to be given permission to move north before the end of this week - in order to join preparations for next week's Champions League qualification first leg clash with Panathinaikos. ‌ The former England international has asked to be given game time during Leicester's summer friendlies as he attempts to fine tune his own fitness levels ahead of his move to Ibrox. ‌ But the deal has been placed on pause while bosses at the King Power have been scrambling to get ready for their return to the Championship following Premier League relegation. Leicester are the only club in English football to remain managerless ahead of the new campaign with a move to appoint Spaniard Marti Cifuentes still bogged down in red tape. The former Queens Park Rangers boss is believed to be waiting for a visa to be rubber stamped before setting up a new home in the East Midlands - and there have been suggestions that Cifuentes could block Coady's exit as he weighs up his defensive options. But Record Sport understands Coady has set his heart on becoming a linchpin of Russell Martin's new look side and has been pushing behind the scenes for the deal to be rubber-stamped and signed off ahead of Leicester leave to set up a 10 day long pre-season training camp in Austria on Wednesday. Ironically, the club has been searching for a new manager for most of the summer, since Martin declined an offer to take over as Ruud van Nistelrooy's successor and headed to Rangers instead. Martin is a huge admirer of Coady and it's believed the player is desperate to team up with him at Ibrox. ‌ But Coady is also aware that Rangers are racing against the clock to be ready for the crucial double header against the Greek big guns, with the first leg in Glasgow in less than a week's time. Martin's recruitment drive gathered pace on Tuesday when 21-year-old winger Djeidi Gassama clinched a £2.2 million move from another of England's crisis clubs, Sheffield Wednesday. The Frenchman has penned a four year contract to become the seventh signing of a hectic summer rebuild following the captures of Lyall Cameron, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell, Manny Fernandez, Thelo Aasgaard and Nasser Djiga. ‌ Now Coady hopes to be given the green light to become Martin's next major reinforcement before the end of this week. Taoiseach acknowledges prices are 'elevated' - and gets told to 'wake-up' to the cost of living

PRICES 'ARE AT a relatively elevated level', Taoiseach Micheál Martin acknowledged today during Leaders' Questions which was dominated by a debate on the cost-of-living. Government ministers have repeatedly ruled out any repeat of one-off cost-of-living measures in October's budget, with Martin stating today that there has to be a 'degree of caution' with spending, given the US tariff threats. The Taoiseach also pointed out that inflation has fallen since its peak around the time of the outbreak of war in Ukraine. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald criticised the Taoiseach telling him 'what you're entirely missing is the fact that prices have not followed suit, and anybody who goes into a supermarket or a shopper who opens up their bill can tell you that we are in a place where households are still struggling'. She said told the Taoiseach that the government's record in the last five months has seen home heating oil prices up by €25, with petrol and diesel prices also gone up in May and again in October. Advertisement The government has shown no sensitivity to the realities of struggling households and workers, said McDonald. 'I am simply asking you to please wake up and become aware of the realities of people's lives. People need these supports,' she said. October's budget Martin said there would be supports in the Budget dealing with cost-of-living and food inflation. 'This government did an awful lot. We did more than any other European Government, actually, in terms of cushioning and trying to reduce the impact on people, and we continue to do that.' In April, the Government decided to extend the VAT reduction to 9% on gas and electricity, he said. 'This measure will save households €70 for gas and €55 for electricity. 'From September onwards, there will be a significant increase in the number of people who qualify for the fuel allowance. Related Reads Opinion: Want to curb rising grocery prices? Force supermarket chains to publish their accounts More than one in six households can't afford a one-week holiday with their children Why has the cost of a block of butter risen so much since last year? 'And since the first of June, women can receive HRT free of charge. At the beginning of June, the Carers Support Grant increased to €2,000. That's the highest level ever, and that benefits some 138,000 carers,' said Martin. McDonald said 'people are being fleeced'. 'For one thing, households in Ireland are paying 30pc more on their electricity bills each year than the EU average. That's nearly €350 more. 'The ESRI says that it is difficult to explain why electricity prices here are so far above other countries. People are being taken for a ride,' she added. The ESRI told an Oireachtas committee today that it is 'challenging' to explain why electricity prices in Ireland are a lot higher than other EU countries. Gunfire disrupts anti-violence rally at crowded Boynton Beach park, wounding three women

Gunfire broke out at a Boynton Beach park during a "Peace in the Hood" rally on July 5, wounding three women, police said as they continued to search for the shooters. About 500 people, many of them children, attended the rally at Sara Sims Park. It called for an end to gun violence, but organizers did not obtain a permit before staging the event, police said. The initial investigation showed that rival gang members began firing at each other, catching attendees in the crossfire, police said. Officers found one woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her femur. Dispatchers reported that two other women went to hospitals in private vehicles, one with a gunshot wound to her leg and the other with a wound to her hip. Bullets also struck several vehicles, both occupied and unoccupied, and other victims sustained minor injuries and received treatment at hospitals or at the scene from Boynton Beach Fire Rescue. From the courts: Florida family in limbo as autistic son faces felony charge for Trump TikTok threat Investigators say the event's organizer reportedly submitted a special events application on June 17 to Boynton Beach to host an event titled "Stop Violence Awareness" for about 20 attendees at Sara Sims Park, on Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Boulevard west of Seacrest Boulevard. One week later, the Recreation and Parks Department notified the organizer that the permit had been denied. The city refunded the organizer's money the same day, which the organizer acknowledged via email, police said. City documents show that a suburban Lake Worth Beach woman applied for the permit. Attempts to reach her for comment on July 8 were not successful. The city documents also show that a Boynton Beach police captain advised against approving the permit due to staffing concerns related to the Fourth of July holiday.
