Taoiseach Micheál Martin urges calm after Fianna Fáil TD says British Army never shot Irish civilians

He was reacting to the claim by one of his own backbenchers, Cathal Crowe of Co Clare, that British Army troops never shot any civilians in Ireland – for which he has since apologised. But Mr Martin, who revealed Mr Crowe contacted him to express his regret at embarrassing the Fianna Fáil party, said people should 'calm down'. Commenting at the Bloom festival, Mr Martin said there has been 'a bit of an over-the-top reaction', in response to Mr Crowe's absolution for the British Army. 'We don't need any lessons in terms of Northern Ireland and the pain and the violence – and yes, the British state was responsible for Bloody Sunday, Ballymurphy, and much, much more,' Mr Martin said. 'I think he was talking in the context of Gaza. Thank God that Gaza never happened in Northern Ireland to the same extent, although one person killed is one person too many. 'As far as I'm concerned, there was horrendous violence in Northern Ireland perpetrated by the State and by the Provisional IRA and by Loyalists like the Glenanne gang. 'There were reprehensible murders, and shocking bombings like Enniskillen, Birmingham, the Dublin-Monaghan bombing, Belturbet, and right across Britain. 'A lot of innocent people were murdered and slaughtered by the IRA. People in Derry and in Ballymurphy were murdered by the British army. We resolved that through a peace process and through reconciliation. 'When I spoke with [US] president [Donald] Trump, and he referred back to the viciousness of what went on in Ireland over 30 years, I made the point to him: We managed to build a peace out of all that vicious violence. 'Peace can work, and the same needs to happen in the Middle East.' Mr Martin said Mr Crowe had been anxious to correct his remarks after speaking 'off the cuff'. 'Cathal Crowe is a very solid TD and doesn't need to be reprimanded. I think people need to be careful about overreacting here. 'We have a peace process in Ireland that is sustained, and we are at peace with Britain. I'm building reconciliation in Northern Ireland through the Shared Island programme, so there's no need to be re-fighting old wars.'

Enterprise businessman has eyes set on Alabama governorship

ENTERPRISE, Ala (WDHN) — An Enterprise businessman has thrown his hat in the ring for the highest office in the state. Chad Chig Martin is running for Alabama governor on the democratic ticket. This is Martin's second time running. His first was in 2022. 'I just feel like I have the business experience to do this, and I see a changing of the guard with Governor Ivey leaving here in the state, and I think I can offer a more energetic and positive direction,' Martin said. Currently, Martin is the owner of Honeysuckle Hemp in Dothan and has experience in aerospace and real estate. Leaning on his experience to focus on economic development for the state if he gets a chance to become governor. 'We've got areas that have been overlooked for years, and people are suffering in those areas. I want to put infrastructure in those areas, and some other things I want are to make sure every child has affordable health care,' Martin said. He says he also wants to restore 'community pride' in public schools as well as crack the code on a contentious legislative issue. 'We need to step up and get a lottery, it's not a moral compass thing, it's the fact 46 out of 50 states have it, and we are building schools in other states with that money,' he said. If Martin can get through the primary, he could face political heavyweight Senator Tommy Tuberville, who has previously expressed opposition to the lottery. Tuberville announced his gubernatorial run this week. The football coach-turned-politician said he would work to improve education and bring manufacturing to the Yellowhammer State, while attempting to stop illegal immigration. Sen. Tommy Tuberville running for governor of Alabama It would be an uphill battle for Martin, who says his first step is getting past the primary, which he claims is controlled by the black belt region — he would have to garner over 70,000 votes. 'I'm trying to reach out to Black voters, work with community leaders, and let them know they have a seat at the table,' said Martin. Martin says his campaign this year is off to a better start than last time, as he has a campaign manager this time, more funding, and he will soon participate in some debates around the state. Two Good Samaritan board members leave after combined 48 years

VINCENNES, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— Thursday marked the final day for two members of Good Samaritan's Board of Governors. Mary Cay Martin began her tenure on the board on February 9, 1998, and Jim Zeigler started on April 8, 2003. Both have served as board president at one point in their tenure, Ziegler doing so from 2007-2009 and again from 2016-2021, and Martin from 2009-2013 and most recently served as Vice Chairwoman. Through their over four decades of combined service, Martin and Zeigler assisted in guiding the hospital through CEO transitions, major facility expansions, the introduction of new care models/partnerships, and more. 'This has been one of the most rewarding experiences I've ever had,' Martin shared. 'I'm so grateful to Sherry Gregg Gilmore for asking me to serve and for supporting me throughout the years.' Martin added that some of her biggest highlights were being voted board president, the construction of the Gibault Memorial, and the launch of the hospital's Federally Qualified Health Center. 'I love this hospital and its commitment to the community,' Zeigler added. 'People should know they can receive top-tier health care right here at home.' Martin and Zeigler will be succeeded by Craig Kirk and Dr. Lance Payton who will begin in June. 'I've had the privilege of working with Jim and Mary Cay for their entire tenure on our Board of Governors,' Good Samaritan CEO Rob McLin said. 'For the past 15 years, they've been my 'bosses,' and I've been honored to work with two individuals who gave of their time to lead Good Samaritan toward our ultimate goal of providing world-class care through world-class caregivers.' MotoGP champion Martin intends to leave Aprilia before 2026 season

MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin announced his intention to leave Aprilia ahead of the 2026 season on Thursday, a week after the Italian team said they expected the Spaniard to honour the two-year contract he signed with them. The 27-year-old, who won his first MotoGP title last season with Pramac Racing, switched to Aprilia and has yet to score a point this year after seven rounds. Wrist and ankle injuries sustained in a pre-season crash ruled him out of the first three rounds before a crash in his first race in Qatar led to a collapsed lung and bruised ribs. "When I made the decision to change manufacturers last year, one of my premises was to have the possibility to test the bike in real circumstances and to understand the team and its working methodology," Martin said in a statement. "In this way I could feel comfortable signing for two years instead of one, and so we included that condition. "Faced with the situation of having to make a decision on a date that is established by contract, I have decided to exercise my right to release myself for the 2026 season." Aprilia said last week that they had not had any negotiations with Martin to change his contract while also warning other teams not to approach him. PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE Martin said he was taking control of his future as a professional athlete. "At no time have I ever breached the contract. When we signed it, I agreed with Aprilia that, if certain circumstances were not met, I reserved the right to decide my future for 2026," he added. "This was an essential condition for me to accept the contract proposal they offered me at that time." Without Martin, Aprilia have struggled for results but finally won a race this season when Marco Bezzecchi triumphed in the British Grand Prix on Sunday. After the victory, which came after race leader Fabio Quartararo retired with a technical issue, Aprilia CEO Massimo Rivola said: "This is a message for Jorge, our bike can win." However, Martin remains unconvinced they can compete in the long run and will look for another manufacturer by the end of the season. Martin was in the running last year for a factory Ducati seat which went to six-times MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, who leads this year's championship with 196 points. Martin completed only 13 laps in pre-season testing and retired from the only race he competed in after the crash in Qatar. "Unfortunately, the circumstances that have occurred as a result of the crashes, although it is true that they do not affect what we agreed, have conditioned this phase," Martin said. While the door to Ducati may be closed and KTM are also struggling for results, Honda could offer him a seat, especially after Luca Marini sustained severe injuries in a testing crash. The Italian's contract runs out at the end of the season.

Packers release DE Jeremiah Martin to make room for rookie WR signing

Packers release DE Jeremiah Martin to make room for rookie WR signing The Green Bay Packers released first-year defensive end Jeremiah Martin to make room for rookie receiver Sam Brown Jr., who was signed to the team's 90-man offseason roster on Thursday. Martin, 25, signed to the Packers practice squad in December of last year. He was retained with a futures deal in January. An injury might have played a role in his release; Martin wasn't available to practice with the team during Wednesday's OTA session open to the media. Martin went undrafted out of Washington in 2023. He spent time with the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants before signing with the Packers last year. In 2024, Martin played in three preseason games with the Browns before being released. The Packers needed the roster spot to sign Brown, a college teammate of Matthew Golden at Houston who spent his final season at Miami in 2024. He went undrafted in the 2025 draft. The Packers now have 13 wide receivers on the 90-man roster. More on Brown here.
