Gallants slapped on the wrist as PSL rules on Mphambaniso matter
Marumo Gallants have been slapped on the wrist by the Premier Soccer League (PSL) in the matter involving Monde Mphambaniso. Gallants were found guilty by the South African Football Association (SAFA) for playing Mphambaniso without a clearance. Mphambaniso featured in 26 league matches for Gallants last season, and Cape Town City discovered this and lodged an official complaint. And while City had expected a deduction of points which would have seen them reinstated back to the Betway Premiership. Had Gallants been docked points, they would have finished below City but the PSL Disciplinary Committee (PSL DC) decided otherwiee. In its ruling, the PSL DC found Gallants guilty as charged but not Mphambaniso, and the club was fined R200 000 of which half was suspended. City finished 15th on the log last season, and were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship via the playoffs. According to the PSL Prosecutor Advocate Zola Majavu, Cape Town City are welcome to appeal this latest ruling. Marumo Gallants players celebrate. Image: Twitter/@_Marumogallants 'I can confirm that a short while ago, the PSL DC just finalised a disciplinary matter in which I had preferred charges of misconduct against Marumo Gallants Football Club as well as its player, Mr. Monde Mpambaniso,' said Majavu. 'The PSL DC ruled as follows, one, that Marumo Gallants be fined an amount of 200,000 Rands, half of which is immediately payable, and the other half suspended for 24 months, on condition that during the period of suspension they are not found guilty of the same offence again.' 'Should they re-offend, that suspended portion would be triggered immediately, and they will be further sanctioned for that subsequent misdemeanour. 'They were further directed to carry the costs of the DC hearing up until the matter was finalised, which costs would be completed administratively, and then on forwarded to Marumo Gallants to pay.' Marumo Gallants found guilty – but did Cape Town City get the outcome they wanted?
Gallants in trouble Marumo Gallants have been found guilty of playing an incorrectly registered Monde Mpambaniso during last season's league campaign. Photo: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Image: Alche Greeff/BackpagePix Relegated Cape Town City's bid to remain in the Betway Premiership has taken yet another knock after the punishment handed out to Marumo Gallants for fielding an incorrectly registered player. After the PSL initially refused to prosecute Gallants over their incorrect registration of Monde Mpambaniso, Cape Town City approached the SAFA arbitration tribunal to force the league to look at the matter. Gallants pleaded guilty when appearing in front of the PSL Disciplinary Committee for the improper registration of Mpambaniso. As a result of the guilty verdict, Gallants will have to pay a fine of R200,000, with 50% suspended for 24 months. Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. 'Should they reoffend, that suspended portion would be triggered immediately, and they will be further sanctioned for that subsequent misdemeanour.' The punishment will not go down well with relegated Cape Town City bosses, who led the charge against Gallants hoping for a points deduction. A points deduction would have seen Gallants finish bottom of the Betway Premiership, resulting in the Citizens retaining their place in the league. This case represented the Cape Town club's last throw of the dice to remain in the top flight after their attempts to buy another club's status did not succeed. It's a bitter pill to swallow for the Capetonians. While the guilty verdict confirms their concerns were valid, the absence of a points deduction means the club must now come to terms with life in the lower division. PSL DC makes ruling on Gallants, Mphambaniso matter
Gallants pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined fined. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) Disciplinary Committee has fined Marumo Gallants for fielding an ineligible player .last season. The case was brought back to the PSL DC after SAFA Arbitrator Nazeer Cassim SC ruled in favour of Cape Town City and said the PSL DC should initiate an investigation into Mphambaniso's eligibility. READ MORE: Will City case open door for Chiefs to sneak into top eight? Now PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu confirmed on Thursday evening that Gallants pleaded guilty to the charge and were fined fined an amount of R200 000 for fielding Mphambaniso during the 2024/25 season. 'I can confirm that a short while ago, the PSL DC just finalised a disciplinary matter in which I had preferred charges of misconduct against Marumo Gallants Football Club as well as its player, Mr. Monde Mphambaniso,' said Majavu. 'This case stemmed from the registration of Mr. Mphambaniso, which was procured by Marumo Gallants without the required clearance certificate in accordance of the rules of the league. Mindful of the circumstances, the context and the background against which this player was registered, Marumo Gallants pleaded guilty, and in the result, were subsequently convicted as such. 'Coming to the issue of sanction, having listened to the evidence in aggravation as well as the evidence in mitigation and the prevailing contextual background pertaining to this matter, which I must hasten to add that was subjected to a variety of disciplinary proceedings, served before various appeal tribunals, including a recent arbitration which resulted in a directive by the arbitrator that they be charged. 'The PSL DC ruled as follows, one that Marumo Gallants be fined an amount of 200,000 Rands, half of which is immediately payable, and the other half suspended for 24 months, on condition that during the period of suspension they are not found guilty of the same offence again. Should they reoffend, that suspended portion would be triggered immediately, and they will be further sanctioned for that subsequent misdemeanour. They were further directed to carry the costs of the DC hearing up until the matter was finalised, which costs would be completed administratively, and then on forwarded to Marum Gallants to pay. 'With regard to the player. The player was found not guilty, and in the result, no sanction was meted out to him. This is the end of this matter for now, unless a party that is aggrieved by this outcome exercises its right to appeal, in which case we will deal with that matter when it arises.'

Backdoor to MTN8: Kaizer Chiefs' fate in the hands of Cape Town City
Kaizer Chiefs could still find themselves in the MTN8 competition, depending on the outcome of Cape Town City's protest against Marumo Gallants. The dispute centres around Monde Mphambaniso, who was allegedly fielded ineligibly by Gallants. If the club is found guilty and forced to forfeit points, Amakhosi could move up the table and qualify for the MTN8. Initially, the PSL Disciplinary Committee chose not to prosecute Gallants for failing to obtain a necessary clearance certificate which is a key requirement before a player can be officially registered with the League. Cape Town City, who were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after failing to win promotion/relegation play-offs, appealed to the SAFA Arbitration Tribunal and have now won the case. If the tribunal's ruling results in points being deducted from Gallants, it could open the door for Kaizer Chiefs to take the final MTN8 spot. The DC hearing is set for Thursday and according to reports, there should be two scenarios: Marumo Gallants could be docket points or just fined. In 2019, Mamelodi Sundowns were fined R250 000 for fielding ineligible player, which was Wayne Arendse. The likely outcome could be a fine which is bad news not only for Cape Town City but also Kaizer Chiefs fans who were hoping for a backdoor entrance. Orlando Pirates striker describes the new coach
Orlando Pirates star Tshegofatso Mabasa has shared his thoughts on the club's new head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou. The Moroccan tactician was appointed last month to lead the Buccaneers in the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Ouaddou joins Orlando Pirates after a notable spell with Marumo Gallants, where he helped the team avoid relegation and earned praise for implementing an exciting style of play. Sundowns news: Two signings to replace Suarez and Kodisang Orlando Pirates train in Marbella, Spain for the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Image: @orlandopirates/X Abdeslam Ouaddou was appointed head coach of Orlando Pirates following the departure of Jose Riveiro, whose contract expired at the end of last season. Riveiro has since taken over at Al Ahly after a successful three-year spell with the Soweto giants, during which he won five trophies, including three consecutive MTN8 titles. Sundowns news: Irqaam Rayners and Lucas Ribeiro 'I think the biggest thing about coach [Ouaddou] is that he's a very demanding coach, but he loves his players at the same time,' Mabasa said via FARPost . 'And he's also an encourager, quite similar to coach Jose. There's not a lot that coach Ouaddou is trying to change. It's only how we defended our set pieces and how we dealt with transitions. 'He's just trying to improve the areas that we lacked last season, and we feel it's mostly from set pieces. We lost the [CAF] Champions League because of set pieces; we conceded three goals against Pyramids FC from set pieces, and we're out of the tournament. 'It's very funny how we lost the Champions League on set pieces, yet in the country, we were the best in terms of defending set pieces. So, coach Ouaddou is just trying to improve on areas we lacked last season,' Mabasa concluded.
