Spider-Man, K-pop, and tech pencil boxes: Back-to-school shopping in full swing in Kozhikode
With the school reopening right around the corner, children and parents have flocked to stationery stores for back-to-school essentials. Retailers had already prepared for the season by displaying vibrant printed school bags and umbrellas prominently at their storefronts. Street Meat (S.M.) street is bustling with activity that began mid-May. 'Cartoons and superheroes continue to be popular,' says M. Shakheer, a shopkeeper on Kozhikode city's busiest commercial street. Another sales assistant chips in, 'Spider-Man, Barbie, and unicorn themes maintain their appeal across items like bottles, bags, and umbrellas. Besides, 3D prints are gaining traction among children,' gesturing towards the glossy bags featuring animated characters. Many parents, after exploring online options, have returned to in-store shopping to ensure the quality of the products. ' It is preferable to come with the children, despite the commotion, ' says Jamshida, a parent, adding that irregular showers are playing spoilsport to the shopping. 'I am eager to return to school,' exclaimed Afnan, an eight-year-old, his face brightening as he looked at the new Marvel-themed pencil box he had purchased. Interestingly, technology has also entered the stationery market with rechargeable pencil boxes that include built-in fans, calculators, and LCD screens for drawing. Nevertheless, car-shaped pencil boxes with integrated sharpeners remain the sought-after.. 'Our cartoon-printed lunch boxes are already sold out,' says Azeem, a storekeeper. However, high school students have drifted away from cartoon motifs, showing a preference for even vintage and Korean-inspired aesthetics. 'It is quite different from when I was their age,' comments Nayana, one of the siblings accompanying a teenager. 'Their tastes are heavily influenced by K-pop culture and Pinterest trends, ' she adds, mentioning their desire for everything in pastel shades to achieve an 'aesthetic' school experience. With schools scheduled to reopen on June 2, parents and students have a few more days to acquire their back-to-school supplies, while tailors are busy completing school uniforms.

Mum's 'living nightmare' after drug lab explosion killed her son, 7, as he slept
Seven-year-old Archie York's mum Katherine Errington has spoken of her devastation after her little boy was killed when a cannabis lab exploded in the flat below their home A mum whose son was killed as he slept at home when a cannabis lab exploded in the flat below has spoken of her living "nightmare". Archie York was just seven years old and safe in his bed when his life was cruelly snatched away. Today Reece Galbraith was jailed for 14 years manslaughter. Galbraith previously admitted the manslaughter of Archie and Galbraith's friend, 33-year-old Jason 'Jay' Laws, in the blast which wrecked the street and rendered families homeless. Archie's mum Katherine Errington previously spoke out about her devastation, telling ChronicleLive: "It's just been awful. It's like we went to sleep that night and and we haven't woken up from that nightmare. "It's like we are living in a nightmare. As a parent, and as a mother, you try your best to keep your children safe, and that was took out of my hands. When they are in the house, that's supposed to be the safest place." Archie and his family were asleep at their home in the Benwell area of Newcastle when the huge explosion occurred on October 16. Katherine, 27, was in one room with her new baby Finley, while Archie and his dad Robbie, 27, slept in another. Katherine and Robbie were taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment, while little Finley was uninjured. She said: "The RVI was the hospital we got taken to straight after the explosion. "From the start they were absolutely great. The care and compassion they had after something like this was amazing. They said they had never dealt with anything like this. It is amazing what they done. "As soon as we got there it was a shock to everyone. They didn't know what had happened. Everyone was so compassionate with all of us. They made sure Finley was ok. I do believe Archie was looking out for him on that night." Paying tribute to her son, Katherine described Archie as a "happy" little boy who loved playing with his friends. She added: "Archie was a very cheeky little boy, he did light up the room everywhere. He loved playing on Fortnite, he loved playing outside with his friends and he loved going to school. He was just a happy lad." In the weeks before he died, he had taken to his new role as a big brother with pride. Mum Katherine added: "He was so looking forward to to being a big brother. When I was pregnant he kept saying; 'When is the baby coming?' "He just loved looking after Finley. He loved changing his nappies and bathing him. He was very hands on. It's just so sad I can't watch them grow up together. That's just been ripped away." Archie was finally laid to rest in January, three months after the explosion following a Marvel-themed service at Newcastle's West Road Crematorium. In lieu of flowers, the family invited donations to be made to the Newcastle Hospitals Charity. They have since donated hundreds of pounds to the Great North Children's Hospital in Archie's memory. "Archie was there lying to rest for a good three months," Katherine added. "Whenever I wanted to visit him they let us. They were just really nice from start to finish. It helped a lot, it really did. If that money helps the nurses or anyone else it's going to be on Archie. He was a caring person." Today, at Newcastle Crown Court, Reece Galbraith was jailed for 14 years for two counts of manslaughter.

Disney reveals first look at new £826million cruise ship - with brand new show and a water attraction
Disney has revealed the first details of its upcoming new $1.1 billion/£826 million cruise ship which will be themed around 'heroes and villains'. Named Disney Destiny, the ship will be the newest addition to Disney's fleet and fans can expect to see many of their favourite characters featured onboard. The ship, which is Disney's seventh, is set to launch in November 2025 and has capacity for 4,000 passengers. Its grand hall will be Marvel-themed and feature a statue of Black Panther hero King T'Challa. Minnie Mouse will stand on the ship's bow in a hero-like pose while there will be a Spider-Man sculpture on the stern. Entertainment will include Broadway-style stage shows with interactive performances. While classic Disney shows, such as Frozen, are likely to feature onboard, passengers will also be able to watch a new show, Disney Hercules. The exclusive new performance will tell the tale of Hercules' adventures with plenty of special effects. Disney says that the show will also feature a 'heartfelt ballad' that was 'originally penned for the movie' but 'left out of the final cut'. Holidaymakers will also be able to take part in activities themed around Disney's heroes and villains. Children can team up with Star Wars' Chewbacca to prep for a mission in a galaxy far, far away. And when it comes to dining, the most exciting new addition is a Lion-King themed restaurant set to be an immersive experience. Musicians and actors will tell the tale of Simba's rise from cub to king while diners tuck into themed culinary treats. Meanwhile, Edna A La Mode, an iconic character from The Incredibles films, will have her own sweet shop on the ship. Disney's AquaMouse water-coaster ride will also have a new storyline on Destiny, with Mickey and Minnie leading passengers on a trek to Villain Mountain's peak. And adults who want to get in touch with their 'villainous' side, can head to De Vil's Hollywood inspired piano lounge for a cocktail. Edna A La Mode, an iconic character from The Incredibles films, will have her own sweet shop on the ship Disney says: 'Indulge in trendy martinis, old-fashioned cocktails or high-end bubblies while swaying to the sultry tunes of a black-and-white spotted piano.' The ship's upper decks will have 10 pools and water play areas including the Toy Story-themed Splash Zone. Disney Destiny will set sail on its maiden voyage from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on November 20. The ship will offer four and five night cruises to the Bahamas and the Western Caribbean, including stops at Disney's private ports, Castaway Cay and Lighthouse Point.

The Grand Hall is a Marvel-themed area and features a statue of Black Panther King T'Challa.
