Mpumalanga man accused of killing nurse girlfriend denied bail
A man accused of killing his girlfriend, Nomvula Octavia Happy Sambo (57), on Thursday was denied bail by the Masoyi Periodical Court in Mpumalanga, yesterday. According to Mpumalanga News, Louis Masuku (50) will again appear in court on July 10 on a charge of murder. Masoyi Police Station spokesperson Sergeant Nanikie Nonyane said Masuku had an argument with Sambo. She was shot and killed, allegedly by him. She was a nurse at the Manzini Clinic. According to reports, Masuku believed his girlfriend, with who he lived, was having an affair with another man. 'Sambo ran out of the house into the neighbour's house. Masuku followed her and allegedly fired several shots. One hit her in the head and she was confirmed dead at the scene,' Nonyane said. The acting Mpumalanga police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, has welcomed the arrest and condemned the continued violence against women. 'We cannot allow this to become normal. Women should feel safe, especially in their own homes and relationships. I urge anyone facing difficulties in their relationships to seek help from professionals or relevant support structures before it ends in tragedy,' said Mkhwanazi. Scarlets face Leinster in play-offs after Sharks loss
United Rugby Championship: Sharks (3) 12 Pen: Masuku, Fassi 3 Scarlets (3) 3 Drop-goal: Costelow Scarlets will travel to face Leinster in the United Rugby Championship (URC) play-off quarter-finals following a 12-3 defeat in a tryless encounter against Sharks in Durban. Aphelele Fassi and Siya Masuku shared four penalties for Sharks while Scarlets responded with a Sam Costelow drop-goal. A last-gasp penalty from Fassi meant Scarlets' failure to gain a bonus point resulted in Dwayne Peel's side staying eighth in the final URC table. This means Scarlets will face top side Leinster in Dublin on Saturday, 31 May (15:00 BST). Sharks' victory mean they have risen above Glasgow to third in the URC table. The South African side will now have to wait for the result of the game between Leinster and Glasgow on Saturday evening to determine their play-off opponents. Results on Friday night ensured Scarlets had sealed their play-off status before they started their final regular game of the season, with qualification for next season's European Champions Cup also achieved. Scarlets' success was rewarded after consecutive bonus-point wins against Ospreys, Dragons, Leinster and Lions. What Peel's side did not know before kick-off in Durban was the opposition and destination of their quarter-final opposition, although they knew they faced an away game. A losing bonus point would have seen Scarlets travel to face second seeds Bulls in Pretoria, but that prospect of a trip to South Africa will now fall to Edinburgh. Scarlets will be hoping former Wales scrum-half Gareth Davies will be fit against Leinster after he suffered a rib injury in the victory against Lions. Archie Hughes was given his first league start of the season and was given an early reminder of the level he was facing when his first kick was charged down by South Africa lock and Sharks captain Eben Etzebeth, who was living on the offside line all game. There was no score in a cagey opening quarter with possession spilled by both sides. Some of the first-half highlights included a searing break from Scarlets flanker Vaea Fifita, while his fellow back rower Taine Plumtree was a lively influence against a side coached by his father John. Wales centre Joe Roberts, on his 50th Scarlets appearance, collected possession before releasing Hughes who was chased down by Springboks wing Makazole Mapimpi just short of the line. Sharks fly-half Masuku finally opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a penalty before Costelow levelled matters with a drop-goal just before half-time. Scarlets hooker Marnus van der Merwe, who was named in an upcoming Springboks' alignment camp, was the first of the second-half replacements when he came on for Ryan Elias. With Masuku forced off the field injured, Fassi took over the kicking duties and slotted over two successful penalties as the defiant Scarlets defence held out the home attack. Scarlets had chances to score a late try. but could not capitalise on late pressure. Their play-off destiny was then altered with the final kick of the game with Fassi's successful effort meaning they will travel to Dublin rather than Pretoria. Scarlets head coach Dwayne Peel said: "It was brutal. I am super proud of the effort we put in. "It was a real scrap and fight with both defences on top and the ball was wet and greasy. "We have had a good tour of South Africa and we are now looking forward to getting home and having two weeks preparations for the play-offs." Sharks: Aphelele Fassi; Ethan Hooker, Jurenzo Julius, Andre Esterhuizen, Makazole Mapimpi; Siya Masuku, Jaden Hendrikse; Ox Nche, Bongi Mbonambi, Vincent Koch, Eben Etzebeth (capt), Emile van Heerden, Tino Mavesere, Vincent Tshituka, Phepsi Buthelezi. Replacements: Fez Mbatha, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Hanro Jacobs, Jason Jenkins, Nick Hatton, Bradley Davids, Francois Venter, Yaw Penxe. Scarlets: Blair Murray; Tom Rogers, Joe Roberts, Johnny Williams, Ellis Mee; Sam Costelow, Archie Hughes; Alec Hepburn, Ryan Elias, Henry Thomas, Alex Craig, Sam Lousi, Vaea Fifita, Josh Macleod (capt), Taine Plumtree. Etzebeth blow as Sharks wreck Ospreys' play-off bid
United Rugby Championship Sharks (14) 29 Tries: Jenkins, Esterhuizen, Hooker, Buthelezi Cons: Masuku 2, Fassi Pen: Masuku Ospreys (3) 10 Try: Parry Con: Edwards Pen: Edwards Ospreys' play-off hopes in the United Rugby Championship (URC) are all but over following defeat by Sharks. The South African side scored two tries apiece in each half to claim a scrappy victory in Durban. Sam Parry stepped off the bench to grab his fifth try of the season in a gutsy but limited display by the visitors at Kings Park. Ospreys' season could be ended by other results this weekend before next week's climax at Lions. Sharks' bonus-point win secured home advantage in the quarter-finals but was tainted by a knee injury for Eben Etzebeth who left the pitch on the back of a medical buggy. Ospreys head coach Mark Jones made just one change to the team that thrashed Dragons for this must-win game but a star-studded Sharks were a distinctly different prospect. The hosts led 14-3 at half-time through their aerial dominance and sheer brute force - but Ospreys had their chances. Lock Jason Jenkins was hard to stop from close range, while centre Andre Esterhuizen proved similarly unstoppable from a few metres more. Ironically it was a dropped ball that dislodged a solid Ospreys defence as well as a wonderfully delayed pass by Jaden Hendrikse. The scrum-half would prove Sharks' match-winner. Ospreys had their moments between those tries but Kieran Hardy's sublime solo effort was ruled out for a fumble over the line, Dewi Lake was denied in the corner, while breaks by Morgan Morse and Dan Kasende went unfinished. Scrum-half Davies signs new Ospreys deal Ospreys' Tipuric targets potential play-off return Regions in jeopardy unless WRU deal is signed Adam Beard played his 100th league game while Jac Morgan made 50th regional appearance - a day after being named in the British and Irish Lions squad. The Wales captain was utterly impressive once again despite another loss - perhaps even more so because of it - keeping Sharks at bay almost single-handedly, leading the match for both turnovers and tackles. But Keelan Giles failed to gather Henrikse's speculative kick to hand wing Ethan Hooker an easy finish. Ospreys struggled to negotiate the Sharks' blitz defence until replacement hooker Parry finished a line-out drive. And as the game broke apart as Ospreys chased more points, Phepsi Buthelezi latched on to a catch and offload by Makazole Mapimpi to clinch a bonus-point success. Sharks: Aphelele Fassi; Ethan Hooker, Jurenzo Julius, Andre Esterhuizen, Makazole Mapimpi; Siya Masuku, Jaden Hendrikse; Dian Bleuler, Bongi Mbonambi, Vincent Koch, Eben Etzebeth (capt), Jason Jenkins, James Venter, Vincent Tshituka, Siya Kolisi. Replacements: Fez Mbatha, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Hanro Jacobs, Emmanuel Tshituka, Phepsi Buthelezi, Bradley Davids, Francois Venter, Yaw Penxe. Ospreys: Jack Walsh; Daniel Kasende, Evardi Boshoff, Keiran Williams, Keelan Giles; Dan Edwards, Kieran Hardy; Gareth Thomas, Dewi Lake, Tom Botha, Will Spencer, Adam Beard, James Ratti, Jac Morgan (capt), Morgan Morse. Replacements: Sam Parry, Steffan Thomas, Ben Warren, Will Griffiths, Harri Deaves, Reuben Morgan-Williams, Owen Williams, Iestyn Hopkins. Handball players from eMzinoni represent SA in Zimbabwe
Lusanda Dhlamini and Lusanda Zulu, two talented handball players from eMzinoni, were selected to represent SA at the Handball Championship in Zimbabwe from April 27 to May 3. Both players are members of the Sukuyende Handball Club in Bethal and learners at Ikhethelo Secondary School. Their coach, Iggy Masuku, said he and Chester Yende, both employed as prison warders at the Bethal Correctional Services, recruited learners from various schools in eMzinoni after receiving a call from Handball South Africa for provincial selections for U17 and U20 female players. 'Although we were working on short notice, Ikhethelo Secondary School allowed us to select and train two teams. We had just six days to introduce and teach the learners handball, a completely new sport to them,' said Masuku. The newly formed teams travelled to Ermelo for the provincial selections on February 16, where they and some Ermelo and Nelspruit players were chosen to represent Mpumalanga at the National Championships held in Rustenburg from February 21 to 23. 'With the support of the Mpumalanga Department of Arts, Sports and Recreation, we made the trip to Rustenburg, where our team competed against other provinces. That's where Lusanda Dhlamini and Lusanda Zulu were selected to join the SA national team,' Masuku added. He said the Sukuyende Handball Club is open to young people interested in learning and playing the sport. The two players going to Zimbabwe needed financial help, handball kits and other essentials. He asked local businesses and community members to lend their support. Anyone interested in assisting can call Masuku on 076 265 6811 or Yende on 076 593 7739.
