Content: News and discussion as we count down to the action Get in touch | Check out the day's upcoming fixtures Yara El-Shaboury Sat 9 Aug 2025 10.07 CEST First published on Sat 9 Aug 2025 09.14 CEST 10.07am CEST 10:07 We have spoiled you rotten with our very first matchday live Q&A of the season, if I do say so myself. Our Midlands, south-west England and Wales football correspondent Ben Fisher will be around later today to answer some of your Football League questions. Send them in below the line or via email which you can find at the top of this blog. Go, go, go! 10.03am CEST 10:03 And, of course, the rest of the EFL continues to storm on. It was a good start for Luton in League One last weekend as Wimbledon's Ryan Johnson became one of the first victims of the own goal this season. Wimbledon will hope to bounce back against Lincoln today. Also in action: Reading v Huddersfield, Leyton Orient v Wigan. And in League Two it was a opener to forget for Plymouth while Cardiff and Huddersfield made hay under new managers Brian Barry-Murphy and Lee Grant. 9.56am CEST 09:56 Away from the Championship, the second week of the Scottish Premiership makes way with Livingston v Falkirk, St Mirren v Motherwell and Rangers v Dundee. It is, of course, too early to call a title winner but if the opening weekend was anything to go by … 9.47am CEST 09:47 Leicester – also relegated from the top-flight last season – face Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow. Dejphon Chansiri's reign at Wednesday is facing a boiling point. Protests and a fly-over are planned and the chair of the supporters' trust, Ian Bennett, says the feeling around the club is 'despair'. He speaks to Will Unwin and what could be a pivotal moment for the 158-year-old club. 9.36am CEST 09:36 So what are the big Championship matches to look out for today then? Southampton, who finished bottom of last season's Premier League by quite are in action at 12.30pm. They host Wrexham, a small Welsh club became the first team in EFL history to be promoted in three straight seasons and have been on quite a journey since their Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney came in. Will they make an appearance tonight? The 5.30pm kick-off sees Bristol City take on Sheffield United. Two sides that made the playoffs last season but could not quite get over the line. Which of the two will put aside their hurt first tonight? You can see all of today's upcoming fixtures here and stay tuned here as we bring you team news and updates as they come. Updated at 9.42am CEST 9.26am CEST 09:26 Today 10 more Championship matches kick-off. Anyone a shoo-in for promotion? Play-off contenders? Youngsters to look out for? Ben Fisher has you covered. Updated at 9.27am CEST 9.20am CEST 09:20 In last night's Championship opener Ipswich, relegated from the Premier League last season, left it late for a 1-1 draw at Birmingham. Arsenal target Premier League player as star shares club's huge transfer plans
Arsenal are expected to be one of the Premier League's most active team in the summer transfer window as they pursue a deal for a top quality striker and a new winger Arsenal are looking to make a splash in the summer transfer market to help them push for the Premier League title next year and the signing of an elite No.9 is their top priority. The Gunners have already been linked with a host of star names since the 2024-25 campaign came to an end. But it remains to be seen whether it will be Viktor Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko or a left-field option who will be leading the line for Mikel Arteta 's men next year. While there is no news yet on a striker signing, Arsenal are closing in on their first summer capture with Martin Zubimendi jetting into London this week. The Real Sociedad playmaker will become the club's first summer signing with a deal all but wrapped up - and there should be plenty more transfer activity to follow in the coming weeks. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest transfer news from in and around The Emirates... READ MORE: Gunners target Norgaard Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard has emerged as a shock midfield target for Arsenal, who could lose the services of Thomas Partey in the coming weeks. Partey will become a free agent at the end of the month and with no agreement in place with the Ghana star, Arsenal are now thought to be weighing up alternative targets. The Gunners also lost the services of Jorginho earlier this month. And Mirror Football understands that Norgaard, 31, is a player Arsenal could move for in order to boost their squad depth ahead of the new season. Timber's transfer hint Jurrien Timber has predicted that Arsenal will be 'busy' in the transfer market this summer as the club's top brass continue to pursue quality signings. Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last term and are desperate to go one better after three successive years of near misses - and Timber reckons the club will add 'lots of players' in a bid to build a title-winning squad. Speaking on the Matchday podcast, he said: "It will definitely be a busy one for Arsenal. I think we will get a lot of players, because we had so many injuries last season." Spurs make Semenyo call Tottenham and Manchester United have cooled their interest in Antoine Semenyo after discovering a deal for the Bournemouth forward would set them back at least £70million. Semenyo is a target for a host of top clubs after a stellar season for the Cherries and was linked with Arsenal back in the spring with the Gunners in the market for attacking reinforcements. While it remains be seen if the Gunners will make a move for Semenyo this summer, The Athletic report Spurs did lodge an enquiry for the Ghana star. But they, much like Manchester United, have been 'deterred' by Bournemouth's valuation of the player. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. MLS Goals of the Week: Dreyer's Deep Drive, Zaha's Volley and More
After Matchday 18 was a quieter week to the MLS regular season, the schedule was back in full force for Matchday 19, bringing every element of excitement even with several players representing their nations at the Concacaf Gold Cup. With a matchday slate spread across four days, it was one of the easier weekends for fans to take in multiple MLS games, and the players did not disappoint. From long range looping strikes to nifty dribbles, it was a week of stellar goals in MLS. Although there were many standout moments from across the league, these five goals stood out among the rest in the weekly Sports IllustratedMLS Goals of the Week. The Philadelphia Union came out as 2–1 victors against Charlotte FC this weekend. As much as the late winning goal from Markus Anderson authored a great moment, this strike from Jesús Bueno stands among the best shots of the matchday. Sam Surridge has been enjoying a stellar season in 2025 and that continued this weekend as he scored his 12th goal of the season. Keeping the ball close to his feet, Surridge fired home to give Nashville SC their eventual 2–1 win over Chicago Fire FC. Wilfried Zaha has been in fine form lately for Charlotte FC grabbing his fourth goal contribution in as many games with a sharp first-touch volley to score for The Crown in their eventual 2–1 loss to the Philadelphia Union. Luciano Acosta has been a standout player in MLS and has faced off against Inter Miami CF's Lionel Messi on several occasions since 2023. Yet, this weekend, it was Acosta dancing through defenders as a diminutive Argentine in FC Dallas's 4–2 win over Sporting Kansas City. Anders Dreyer has already proven himself as one of the most valuable players in MLS this season, but his eighth goal of 2025 caught everybody off guard as he scored from halfway in San Diego FC's 4–2 win over Minnesota United.
