Man Utd dealt huge blow in pursuit of £50m Liam Delap alternative
After missing out on Liam Delap, Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit of another Premier League striker. United looked to be leading the race to sign Delap who caught the eye after scoring 12 goals in his first full top-flight season for relegated Ipswich Town. However, the 22-year-old turned the Red Devils down and is now set to join Chelsea in a transfer worth £30million. Ruben Amorim is desperate to sign a striker this summer to replace the underperforming Rasmus Hojlund, with Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres among those linked with Old Trafford. Jean-Philippe Mateta is another name on their shortlist following a fantastic two seasons at Crystal Palace, which culminated with lifting the FA Cup in May. The Frenchman has been one of the Premier League's top strikers following Oliver Glasner's arrival at Selhurst Park last year, with only Alexander Isak, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah scoring more since then. United's interest in Mateta was first reported in February, with Palace valuing him at over £50m and The Independent now report that the 27-year-old remains an 'appealing' target for the Red Devils. But in a major blow for Amorim, they also report that Mateta wants to play in the Champions League, something United cannot offer after finishing 15th in the table and losing the Europa League final to Tottenham. It is for the same reason that Delap has opted to join Chelsea, while Palace can give Mateta European football as their FA Cup triumph qualifies them for the Europa League. And in a further blow to United, talkSPORT have reported that the striker might sign a new contract with the Eagles over the summer, with his current deal set to expire in 2027. Appearances: 59 Goals: 30 Minutes per goal: 145 Assists: 5 Trophies: FA Cup With their first European venture on the horizon, the south London side will be keen to sort out the futures of their star players and manager Glasner as soon as possible. United are among the clubs linked with Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton, while Marc Guehi is expected to depart with Newcastle leading the race for his signature. Speaking in February, Paul Merson insisted that Jean-Philippe Mateta would be a perfect striker for Manchester United. More Trending 'Man United should get Mateta, that's what they need,' the ex-Arsenal and England winger told Sky Sports. 'He's a strong lad up front, playing at the top of his game, he leads the line, scoring goals now. He runs and works his socks off harder than anyone you know. 'He's 100 times better than anyone Man United have in the front line. Not Amad [Diallo], he's a young kid – but he's much better than Hojlund and [Joshua] Zirkzee at the moment.' Man United 'position themselves' to sign Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta as he weighs up his options
Man United 'position themselves' to sign Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta as he weighs up his options Manchester United have reportedly placed themselves in a position to swoop in for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, if he is interested in joining Ruben Amorim's ranks. It's no secret that United are actively searching for a reliable striker following another challenging season for Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish forward has struggled to meet the expectations of a United frontman, and his future at the club now looks increasingly uncertain. Advertisement United are believed to be open to selling Hojlund, who has drawn interest from clubs in Italy. Should he leave, the 22-year-old would undoubtedly need to be replaced. Even if he were to stay, it's clear that United still require reinforcements up front. Some of the names that continue to be linked to the Red Devils include Victor Osimhen (Napoli), Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting CP), Liam Delap (Ipswich Town) and of course, Mateta. However, with United missing out on European football next season following their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, their options in the transfer market have significantly narrowed, potentially forcing them to compromise slightly on quality. A recent report covered by The Peoples Person noted that United have a B list of striker targets, which features Mateta's name. Advertisement The Frenchman has been prolific again this term, notching an impressive 14 goals and two assists in 36 Premier League appearances. He was crucial for Palace as they beat Manchester City in the FA CUp final to secure their spot in next term's Europa League. It was the first major piece of silverware in the Eagles' history. According to L'Equipe, United are among the clubs that have 'already positioned themselves' to secure Mateta's signature. It's understood that the 27-year-old is considering his options, with a view to breaking into the France national team. L'Equipe reveal, 'For Jean-Philippe Mateta, choosing his next club will be crucial. The striker still dreams of joining the French national team and competing in the 2026 World Cup with the team.' Advertisement 'He knows that his choice—stay or leave—will have significant consequences in giving Didier Deschamps more leverage to secure a call-up.' 'Mateta will wait and see what concrete avenues emerge in the coming weeks before making his choice. A return to France is not entirely out of the question.' Palace are thought to value Mateta at a whooping £50 million. Feature image Michael Regan via Getty Images Follow us on Bluesky: @

Jean-Philippe Mateta's transfer stance as Man Utd step up summer rebuild
Manchester United are set for a major rebuild this summer and Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is on their radar after his excellent campaign at Selhurst Park Jean-Philippe Mateta is considering his future, with Manchester United interested in signing the Crystal Palace striker this summer. Mateta has enjoyed a prolific season so far, scoring 17 goals across all competitions and helping Palace win the FA Cup. The 27-year-old is set to enter the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park and his form has attracted the interest of United, who have struggled for goals this season. Frontline strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have managed just seven Premier League goals between them. As a result, Ruben Amorim is looking to bring in more firepower and L'Equipe are reporting that Mateta is being targeted. The report states Mateta hopes to play for France at the 2026 World Cup and knows that making the right decision about his future will be key if he is to realise that dream. United are said to have 'already positioned themselves' to make a move for the striker, but a potential return to Ligue 1 is 'not entirely out of the question'. The news comes after former Arsenal star Paul Merson suggested that Mateta would be a good fit at Old Trafford. "I wouldn't say Arsenal," he told Sky Sports when asked about Mateta. "At the Emirates, teams sit 10 behind the ball and I don't think he has that guile. "He needs grass in front of him where he's willing. He makes good runs, he's strong, he's quick and he's a really good player. I thought Man Utd would go for him in the January transfer window. I think he's a really good fit for them at the moment with what they need and to steady the ship. "He'll lead the line. He defends from the front and he's a nightmare for defenders. I can't imagine too many defenders coming off the pitch after a game and going 'that was a walk in the park'. I think he gets the move this summer." Although United will not be playing Champions League football next season after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final, the club's chief executive Omar Berrada has stated that they are ready to back Amorim in the transfer window. Speaking back in March, Berrada told TNT Sports: "We speak to Ruben [Amorim] very frequently. Ruben has a good relationship with Jason Wilcox. They both share the vision of how they want to see the team playing. "It is about planning properly for the summer transfer window and having a clear idea of what players we want to bring in. We're making some big efforts to get us in the best financial position. "Even if we're outside of Europe - I think we will be in a position to invest in the squad. Our ambition is to... win the Europa League and be in the Champions League which is where I think we belong." Crystal Palace eyeing move to sign 21-year-old striker
Crystal Palace Eye Emegha as Mateta Exit Looms Strategic planning shapes summer outlook Crystal Palace, a club that once drifted between the mundane and the merely functional, now finds itself wrestling with an unfamiliar dilemma: how to build upon success without surrendering the very forces that made it possible. Photo: IMAGO According to TeamTalk, Jean-Philippe Mateta — the oft-overlooked striker turned FA Cup hero — is now the object of desire for some of Europe's heavyweights. The likes of Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and Manchester United are circling, drawn by his resurgence under Oliver Glasner and Palace's recent qualification for the Europa League. Advertisement His potential departure, however, has not caught the club flat-footed. Palace have long been tracking Strasbourg's Emanuel Emegha, a 21-year-old Dutch striker whose profile seems engineered for Premier League disruption. With 14 goals and three assists in Ligue 1, Emegha's mix of athleticism and composure has earned admirers across the continent. Photo IMAGO Emegha fits evolving tactical mould What makes Emegha more than a statistical substitute is his fit within Glasner's system. A source told TeamTalk that Palace believe he 'could slot seamlessly' into the current set-up — not merely filling a hole, but continuing the forward momentum Glasner has instilled. It's not just about goals, but about function, movement, and press-resistance. Photo: IMAGO Palace navigate European interest There's a realism at Selhurst Park, though. Mateta's price tag stands at around £29.4m, and while his recent form justifies such a valuation, Palace also recognise the reality of market forces. The same €35m figure is understood to be enough to prise Emegha away from Strasbourg, effectively creating a transfer loop with symmetry and simplicity. Photo IMAGO Decisions define direction The real question is whether this is evolution or regression. Does replacing Mateta with Emegha represent progression or the start of another rebuild? Palace may have won silverware, but now come the tougher choices — how to stay relevant while keeping their best assets intact. Our View – EPL Index Analysis This update will trigger mixed emotions amongst Palace supporters. On the one hand, being linked with a bright prospect like Emanuel Emegha is a clear sign that the club is scouting ambitiously and thinking ahead. But on the other, the idea of losing Jean-Philippe Mateta just as he hits his stride feels like déjà vu. Advertisement There's a growing concern that Palace, despite their Europa League qualification and FA Cup success, could be poised to repeat past mistakes — selling a key player at a crucial moment. Mateta has become more than a goalscorer; he's emblematic of this new, fearless Palace side under Glasner. Photo: IMAGO Yes, Emegha looks exciting, but fans are wary of disruption. Replacing Mateta is not simply a numbers game. It's about dressing room chemistry, tactical familiarity and momentum. Emegha could thrive, or he could take time to settle. In the meantime, Palace risk losing the sharp edge that took them to Europe. If Mateta stays, fans will feel the club is building on strength. If he goes, many will wonder whether this summer's rebuild is one step forward and two steps back.

Crystal Palace vs Wolves prediction plus 14/1 bet builder
Crystal Palace will be looking to continue the celebrations throughout the summer as FA Cup champions but they will have to focus on the two remaining Premier League matches starting with Wolves Crystal Palace, who are currently basking in the glory of their monumental FA Cup victory, will be returning to action sooner than they would like as they welcome Wolves to Selhurst Park on Tuesday night. As they gear up to host at their home ground of Selhurst Park, the echoes of their historic 1-0 win against Manchester City at Wembley are still fresh. This victory is a first in the club's extensive 164-year history, and it has sparked a wave of euphoria among the club and its loyal followers. This impressive feat has not only etched Palace's name in history but also secured them a coveted position in the forthcoming season's Europa League. Their current gaffer, Oliver Glasner, is no stranger to this competition, having won it with Eintracht Frankfurt back in 2022. With such a monumental achievement fuelling their confidence, Selhurst Park is bracing for an electrifying atmosphere when the Wolves visit. On the flip side, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been showing promising signs of recovery since Vitor Pereira took over as manager in late 2024. The experienced Portuguese tactician has navigated Wolves to a safe spot in the Premier League, comfortably steering clear of the relegation dogfight. However, Wolves will be entering this game on a somewhat low note after suffering two consecutive league defeats, with their most recent being a 2-0 loss at home to Brighton. Despite these hiccups, Pereira is expected to galvanise his squad and aim to spoil Palace's victory party with an assertive display on the pitch. Crystal Palace vs Wolves Bet Builder I am expecting this to be an end-to-end clash despite neither side have anything to play for with Palace looking set to finish 12th - again - this season and Wolves escaping a relegation battle comfortably the pressure is off both sides for any "must-win" scenario here. Palace will of course be looking to benefit from the expectant atmosphere at Selhurst Park as the Holmesdale faithful look to up the ante as FA Cup champions for the first time while Wolves will be eager to maintain their impressive form of late despite suffering back-to-back wins. Both sides average more than half of their league matches ending in both teams to score and I am fully expecting Dean Henderson to be "at the beach" after keeping a clean sheet at Wembley last weekend while Wolves have conceded three times in their last two outings. The Eagles will be looking for Mateta to be a threat again having scored 14 times already this season in the league despite last scoring only twice in his last eight outings. But I doubt the Frenchman will not be a threat against the Wolves defence who have shown to be rather prone to players of Mateta's physique and ability. Here are the selections for the 14/1 Bet Builder: Crystal Palace to win Jorgen Larsen to get over 0.5 shots Jean-Philippe Mateta to get over 1.5 shots Both teams to score 18+ | Gamble responsibly | | Odds subject to change Gamble responsibly Reach plc is committed to promoting safer gambling.
