‘Bored of being your sidegirl': Avril Mathie retires from boxing with emotional farewell
Avril Mathie/ Instagram Australian boxer Avril Mathie has officially retired from professional boxing after a 13-year career, sharing an emotional farewell message on Instagram. The Sun reports the fighter ends her career with a record of eight wins, one loss, and one draw. Mathie was once set for a high-profile 2023 bout against fellow Australian Ebanie Bridges, a fight dubbed the 'battle of the boobs' due to both fighters' striking physiques and weigh-in antics. However, Mathie pulled out of the fight due to injury and later revealed she had removed her breast implants after 18 years. In her heartfelt Instagram post, Mathie described boxing as 'the love of my life' and said: 'Sadly, after 13 years, I must say goodbye. My heart is broken walking away from you, I still have so much love for you, some may call it addiction in fact. I had so many dreams for our future, but my body can't take your abuse anymore.' She went on to explain the challenges that led to her decision: 'But a year and a half ago, you hurt me so badly. And while I missed you during that time apart healing, I also had the best year of my life. It opened my eyes to what else is waiting for me beyond you… Slowly I just became tired of the pain, bored of being your sideline girl and am craving to be again in something like that we once had when I felt like I was growing unstoppably.' After consulting with friends, she realized boxing no longer met her needs and said: 'I've realised it's me who's the fun and inspiring one, it's not even about you and that will translate into all my future relationships… And I know you'll miss me, but don't worry, I'll find a way to stay connected to you. Thanks for everything, boxing, I'll be forever grateful we crossed path.' Ebanie Bridges, a former bantamweight champion, responded to Mathie's announcement, saying: 'You'll always be the one that got away to me.' 'I love this letter. You are amazing in and out of the ring. Onto the next chapter / new love, which I have no doubt you will succeed in.' Mathie, also known for her career as an OnlyFans star and swimsuit model, revealed on her YouTube channel that undisclosed injuries were the main reason for her retirement. She also suffered a serious motorbike accident in 2023 where her bone was exposed, further complicating her return to boxing. In a related note from late 2024, Mathie stunned her social media followers by revealing a significant body transformation after having her breast implants removed. Speaking candidly on Instagram, she explained: 'If you noticed something on me looking a little differently lately, you're right. Seven weeks ago I removed my breast implants after 18 years… I got my first implants when I was only 19 because the culture I grew up in had me believing that I was out of proportion –and I was so insecure about my body.' She also discussed health concerns that influenced her decision: 'In the last couple of years I've seen girls I know remove their implants due to breast implant illness… scans revealed that the implants were actually not in the best condition and while not an emergency, the doctor recommended that I consider removal or replacement.' Mathie described the recovery as 'absolutely brutal' and admitted it delayed her boxing comeback. However, she said: 'Honestly, it was one of the best decisions of my life.'

Graeme Mathie says Ayr United squad 'well placed' to bounce back from play-off disappointment
The managing director says Ayr won't require huge summer surgery and will prioritise quality over quantity. Graeme Mathie insists Ayr United are 'well placed' to bounce back from their play-off disappointment. The Honest Men fell flat on the big stage as they were knocked out by Partick Thistle on Friday night. Boss Scott Brown has confessed he will need to recruit 'leaders' to take Ayr to the next level. Mathie, the Somerset managing director, says the Jags defeat left the club floored. But he is adamant the foundations are already in place ahead of a summer rebuild. He told the Ayrshire Post: 'We are in a far better place in terms of squad size and quality than we were at this time last year. 'A good core of players are signed for next season and that gives us a platform that means we're well placed to build. 'Everyone clearly felt the disappointment of the way the season ended, and there is no getting away from that. 'It was gutting for all concerned, but it is a sign of the progress being made that we now have a certain level of expectation around this club. 'My job is to ensure we remain level headed about things – whether at high points or the low.' Mathie added: 'Twice in the last three years we've reached the promotion play-offs in the Championship – the challenge is to take that next step now. 'We need to bounce back from this disappointment but we will.' Ayr are holding talks with out of contract players this week but it's unlikely there will be the usual summer exodus. More than a dozen players are under contract and first teamers such as Scott McMann, Dylan Watret, Paddy Reading, Ben Dempsey, Marco Rus, George Oakley and Curtis Main are all signed for next season. Rising star Watret has triggered an extension in his deal until 2028 following his breakout season, while goalkeeper Liam Russell has also signed on for another year. It's also expected that Jamie Murphy will agree to stay on and expand his remit to include a coaching role. The problem goalkeeper position – Ayr used five different players between the sticks last season – is set to focus minds during the summer. United would ideally like to recruit an experienced number one, while a centre half with top leadership qualities will also head the shopping list.

'We created the most chances I've seen for a long time'
Former Ipswich striker Alex Mathie says Kieran McKenna's side "did themselves proud" against Nottingham Forest and put in an equally impressive attacking and defensive display.A shootout defeat left Ipswich with no cup competitions left to contest, meaning all focus can be on the final 11 games of the season and Premier League survival."We played well and they created the most chances I've seen for a long time," Mathie told BBC Radio Suffolk. "They also defended well so they did themselves proud."The players, staff and fans have given it everything, but it was to be Forest's night."The players can take a lot from the game. This season they have been in every game but it's a case of not taking their chances before the teams with top quality put theirs away. That is what has killed us because we can't get back into games."There are still loads of points to play for, so I'm still not ruling us out [of staying up]. The job is obviously very difficult but because of the way we are playing, I can't rule us out."Hear more from Mathie and all the post-match reaction on BBC Sounds
