Scottie Scheffler becomes ridiculous favorite at The Open

The post Scottie Scheffler becomes ridiculous favorite at The Open appeared first on ClutchPoints. The 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush has already seen wild storylines play out. Bryson DeChambeau made history, following up his 78 with a 65 on Friday to make the weekend. Captain Keegan Bradley put himself in a great position, prompting more Ryder Cup talk. But all eyes are on World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler entered Friday's second round in a good spot, signing for a 3-under 68 on Thursday. But early on, it appeared there was little chance he could hold the lead entering the weekend after 2023 Open winner Brian Harman went low, climbing to 8-under. Then Scheffler said the proverbial, 'hold my beer.' The 3-time major champion came out white hot, birdieing four of his first seven holes, including three straight. The moment he climbed to 7-under, his odds of winning the Open Championship skyrocketed. As the X account Covers posted odds from BetUS, you could not even get him at even money any longer. Scheffler made the turn in just 32 strokes. The Ridgewood, New Jersey native was going off at -115. Meanwhile, the closest competitor was 2022 U.S. Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick. Granted, since those odds were posted, Fitzpatrick has also caught fire with four straight birdies. He is the first playing in The Open field to reach double figures at 10-under. That has boosted his odds from the listed +600, but Scheffler is still easily the favorite. In fact, there are only two golfers within 10 times the odds of the world's best player. Scottie Scheffler continued to chase down Fitzpatrick, too. He began his back nine the way his front ended, with another birdie on the par-4 10th. To no one's surprise, Scheffler leads the field in strokes gained, a stat that he has dominated to historic levels over the last couple of years. The heavy rains have kicked in at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. It will make for an interesting finish to the second round of the Open Championship. Scottie Scheffler steals Open Championship lead with sensational Round 2

The post Scottie Scheffler steals Open Championship lead with sensational Round 2 appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Open Championship at Royal Portrush is halfway through, and a familiar face is at the top. Brian Harman went out early on Friday and set the pace, finishing 36 holes at eight under par. But the 2023 champion did not go low enough to keep the No. 1 player in the world at bay. Scottie Scheffler tore up Royal Portrush on Friday to take the lead at The Open Championship. Scheffler missed a birdie putt on 12, the easiest hole on the course, to settle for a par. After that, he ripped off three birdies and four pars to storm past Harman and Matthew Fitzpatrick and into the solo lead. Having never won The Open Championship before, he answered the question of playing in the elements, making putts through a downpour on Friday. Scheffler shot seven under, 64, to clip Fitzpatrick by a shot and take the lead at ten under par. The putter was on fire, with +4.37 strokes gained on the field, the best among Friday's players. What was once his kryptonite turned into his strength on Friday to put him on the doorstep of another major title. 'Scottie Scheffler's 8 birdies today tie a career high in any major championship round. He's done it twice previously at the PGA in 2020 and 2025,' Justin Ray of TwentyFirst Group posted. Scheffler finished tied for fourth at the 2020 PGA and won this year's title. Scheffler has finished in the top ten twice at The Open Championship, but was never scaring the lead. Last year, his T-7 finish was eight shots behind Xander Schauffele at last year's championship. Now, he has his hands on the wheel heading into the weekend at another major championship. If Scheffler wins The Open Championship, he would be three-quarters of the way to the career Grand Slam, with just the U.S. Open remaining. Scheffler takes one-shot lead into British Open third round

Scottie Scheffler will take a one-shot lead into Saturday's third round of the British Open at Royal Portrush under the expectation to "dominate", according to his playing partner Matthew Fitzpatrick. The world number one eased to a magnificent seven-under par 64 in the second round to edge ahead of Fitzpatrick as he bids for a first Claret Jug, which would complete the third leg of a possible career Grand Slam. Scheffler, who sits at 10-under for the tournament, will tee off at 3:35 pm local time (1435 GMT) alongside England's Fitzpatrick. "He's going to have the expectation to go out and dominate. He's an exceptional player. He's world number one, and we're seeing Tiger-like stuff," said Fitzpatrick. "I think the pressure is for him to win the golf tournament." Fitzpatrick, on nine-under overall, is a shot ahead of 2023 champion Brian Harman and China's Li Haotong, who make up the penultimate group. With no other player within four strokes of the lead, the pressure is on the chasing pack to make the most of excellent scoring conditions in Northern Ireland and cut the gap. Home favourite Rory McIlroy will need something spectacular to get back into contention for a second British Open title, getting his third round under way seven shots back. There were plenty of birdies on offer for the early starters, with Canadian Corey Conners carding a five-under 66 in the first group on the course to reach four-under overall. But Scheffler will be a strong favourite to close out his fourth major victory. The American arrived at Portrush following a run of 10 successive top-10 finishes, featuring three wins including the PGA Championship. Fitzpatrick is hoping to become the first English winner of the British Open since Nick Faldo won his third title in 1992. He described a missed cut at the Players Championship earlier this year as the lowest point of his career, but has found some form in recent weeks. The 2022 US Open champion carded a 66 on Friday, rolling in a 23-foot par putt on the 18th. Harman is targeting a second British Open in three years following his six-shot triumph at Hoylake in 2023. Li, who finished third on debut at the 2017 British Open, is still in the hunt to become the first Chinese man to lift a major title. "Definitely want to be comfortable... Will be a lot of pressure for sure, but just have to find a way to deal with that," said Li, playing in his first major since 2022. jc/ea
