(AP Photo/Martin Meissner) STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Lamine Yamal won the battle of Ballon d'Or contenders on Thursday by scoring twice as Spain eclipsed France 5-4 in their Nations League semifinal. The 17-year-old Yamal outshone French counterparts Désiré Doué and Ousmane Dembélé as Spain initially ran riot against Didier Deschamps' tired-looking team to book its place in Sunday's final against Portugal. Advertisement Portugal defeated host nation Germany 2-1 on Wednesday. Thursday's game had been billed as a contest between young stars, but it was clear that Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League win in Munich on Saturday had added more weight to French legs with PSG stars Doué and Dembélé disappointing. Kylian Mbappé scored what seemed a consolation from a penalty, substitute Rayan Cherki scored late on his France debut, then Spain defender Daniel Vivian conceded an own goal, and Randal Kolo Muani, another substitute, scored in stoppage time as France came close to an improbable comeback. Nico Williams opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after Yamal threaded the ball through to Mikel Oyarzabal, who held off two defenders and served it on a plate for Williams to rifle to the roof of the net. Advertisement Mikel Merino, the hero when Spain last played in Stuttgart, made it 2-0 three minutes later after playing a one-two with Oyarzabal. Théo Hernandez struck the crossbar and Spain needed goalkeeper Unai Simón to deny Doué, then Mbappé and Dembélé. But Spain looked capable of scoring at any time. Real Madrid defender Dean Huijsen thought he'd scored spectacularly after a brilliantly worked free kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was the 20-year-old Huijsen's third game for Spain. It looks like he's set to stay. Adrien Rabiot conceded a penalty for a mistimed challenge on Yamal, who dusted himself off to make it 3-0 from the spot in the 54th. Advertisement Pedri scored a minute after that, taking Williams' pass with his first touch and dinking it past the bewildered Mike Maignan with his next. Pedro Porro's foul gave Mbappé his chance from the penalty, but Yamal replied to that by prodding the ball past Maignan. ___ AP soccer:

Indianapolis to host US Olympic swimming trials again in 2028 after last year's record run
FILE - Lilly King, of the United States, competes in the women's 100-meter breaststroke semifinal at the 2024 Summer Olympics, July 28, 2024, in Nanterre, France. (AP Photo/Matthias Schrader, File) INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The 2028 U.S. Olympic swimming trials will return to Indianapolis' Lucas Oil Stadium after drawing record-breaking crowds last year in the first event held inside a football stadium. USA Swimming officials made the announcement Tuesday in Indianapolis where this year's national championships are being held this week. Dates for the event have not yet been announced. Advertisement Organizers intend to build three temporary pools on top of the NFL's Colts' home field — a 50-meter competition pool and two warm-up pools. The Indiana Convention Center, which is connected to the stadium, will host USA Swimming's Toyota Aqua Zone. Last year, more than 285,000 fans attended the nine-day trials. That was a 60% increase over previous events. Single session records also were shattered as television ratings increased 20% from the previous team trials in 2021. Organizers estimated the event helped generate $132 million in revenue for the city. The 2024 trials also won the annual Fan Engagement Award and were a finalist for Sports Business Journal's event of the year. Indianapolis has a long and storied history with the Olympic swimming trials. The 2028 trials will mark the eighth time the city has hosted the event since 1924 when Johnny Weissmuller and Duke Kahanamoku were the stars. Advertisement Other familiar names who qualified for the U.S. Olympic teams include Amanda Beard, Janet Evans, Rowdy Gaines, Katie Ledecky, Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps, Jenny Thompson and Dara Torres. The 2028 Olympics will be held in Los Angeles and could again feature the brother-sister duo of Alex and Aaron Shackell, who swam for nearby Carmel High School. ___ AP sports:

A soccer player celebrates with a beer bath, frozen in time, as captured by an AP photographer
MUNICH, Germany (AP) — Based in Munich, Matthias Schrader has been working for The Associated Press since 2008, covering news and sports, including multiple Olympics and World Cups. Here's what he had to say about this extraordinary this photo? The photo was taken after the last home match of FC Bayern Munich's season. Bayern has once again won the Bundesliga title and received the championship trophy. Traditionally, there are the popular beer showers as part of the celebration. The players showered themselves with wheat beer from 5 litre (1.3 gallon) glasses. How I made this photo My photo was taken when Leroy Sane caught his teammate Jamal Musiala with such a shower. I took the picture with my Sony Alpha 1. The shutter speed was 1/3200 sec at aperture 2.8. As always, it had to be moved very quickly to get ahead of competitors. My colleague Sergei Grits edited the photo directly from the camera and sent the picture to the wire. With success! Why this photo works It's simply the moment. Everyone knows what it's like when you pour water on your face. Standing in the shower. Capturing that thousandth of a moment, freezing it, is something not everyone has in mind. And then with beer, indescribable. A painful waste for any beer lover. For more extraordinary AP photography, click here.
