Rep. Dexter: Trump policies ‘destabilizing, undermining' Oregon
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Just a day after the Trump Administration they say are defying federal law, US Rep. Maxine Dexter did not back down before a Saturday town hall at Mount Hood Community College. The list by the Department of Homeland Security along with numerous cities and counties in the Pacific Northwest. The Trump Administration said each jurisdiction identified will receive formal notification of not complying with federal statues and demand they review and revise their policies. Last living grandson of 10th U.S. President John Tyler, dies at 96 Federal funding being withheld 'is a concern, it's the threat. But we are not going to back down from protecting our neighbors. This is a sanctuary city, we are a sanctuary county, we are a sanctuary state,' Dexter told KOIN 6 News. 'We have tripled-down on making sure people feel as safe as possible in a really unsettling time.' She noted people often say immigration is not an issue that affects their daily lives, but she pushed back on that idea. 'I get a lot of criticism for fighting for immigrant rights and due process. If they can pick someone up with a Green Card without due process and put them away, it can happen to you. It can happen to me,' she said. 'We have to make sure that all of us have the rights that our Constitution gives us — and it's not just for citizens, which is to the contrary of what a lot of folks are circulating.' Oregon companies call for investigation into countries accused of 'dumping' exports Dexter, hosting her 10th town hall since taking office, said there has been one consistent topic brought up in all her events. 'Democracy has been a top of mind issue for constituents throughout,' she told KOIN 6 News. 'The detention centers, immigration, the economy, most likely we'll hear some things about the Middle East. We've got others who are concerned about other parts of our democracy, like the SAVE Act and the budget bill.' And she said the tariffs policies are not helping Oregonians. 'Oregon is the 10th-most trade dependent state in the nation. This is without question already impacting us. Our budget forecast that we just received was $750 million less than we estimated. Economists already believe tariffs are already having an impact. We are dependent on trade and exports in particular,' she told KOIN 6 News. She continued, 'What Trump is doing is not helping our economy, it's not fiscally stabilizing. It is destabilizing and undermining the people of this state.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. ‘Reclaim compassion': Congresswoman Dexter gets emotional during town hall
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Congresswoman Maxine Dexter got emotional Thursday during a town hall with local veterans. Dexter, alongside Congressman Mark Takano, addressed Veterans Thursday morning, working to ensure them that they and their families would receive the 'support, care and benefits that they have earned and deserve' During the town hall, one veteran spoke to the pair about entitlement reform and the possibility of inheritance taxes, which future generations may not be able to afford. In her response, Dexter started getting emotional while speaking on the opportunities that she had growing up and how moving forward the Democratic party needs to be more pragmatic in their approach to patriotism, but also how they need to push kindness and compassion for everyone. 'You can't work your way through college and pay for your housing in Portland, let alone, I grew up in Seattle. Like I could pay for my higher ed and pay for my rent, and have health care with my union. We don't see that for people anymore. That stability is not there. And so that is where my compassion is. It's not codependency. It's what we deserve as Americans to expect that everyone has a stable ground beneath them,' she said. 'The American dream is not just aspirational for the few who already have access to privilege, but for everybody. And that's why I'm serving, quite frankly, I gave up a career I love because my kids and your kids, and your grandkids deserve a future that has the same opportunity that I had to work my way. I am the American dream personified. It's not fair for people anymore. So I hear you. Freedom is something that we need to reclaim as Democrats, but we also need to reclaim compassion and loving your neighbor in a way that we aren't seeing right now.' Oregon Food Bank says proposed tax bill will ‘compound the problem' of food insecurity
PORTLAND, Ore. () – Leadership at the Oregon Food Bank met with Congresswoman Maxine Dexter to discuss the on-the-ground impacts of Republicans' tax bill that passed the U.S. House of Representatives. Andrea Williams, the food bank's president, said they are already facing rising food insecurity in Oregon for a variety of reasons, and this bill would make it worse. City workers avert strike, reach tentative agreement 'One of those is less benefits,' she said. 'One of those is an increase in cost and food, wages are not keeping up. And then there's various policy choices. So if you add on reducing SNAP, reducing access to health care coverage, you're going to continue to compound the problem.' Dexter said the bill would reduce the number of people who could get SNAP benefits, which would impact other benefits as well. 'Whether or not you qualify for SNAP is how kids get free and reduced lunches at school like this. When you go in for, child care benefits or other benefits, like it is just it's a threshold. And so we have shifted the threshold.' She said the state would have a hard time making up the difference for benefits with its tight budget situation. Now the bill heads to the US Senate, and Dexter said she has already had conversations with Oregon Senator Ron Wyden. 'Making sure that there are robust negotiations, but centering the health and stability of our community, was not the case in the House of Representatives,' she said. 'And we really need our senators to step up and do the right thing for their constituents.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
