Review – The New Gods #8: The Gathering

The New Gods #8 cover, via DC Comics. Ray: The first arc of this series was a no-holds-barred cosmic war, showing the New Gods in a battle for survival on both New Genesis and Apokalips like we rarely do. After Lightray fell i combat, the fallout forced both factions to decamp to a safe zone – Earth. There, they found refuge – the New Genesis refugees with the Justice League, and the Apokalips survivors with an opportunistic Maxwell Lord. It's clear that all the residents of New Genesis are grieving – but none more than Highfather, who viewed Lightray like a son. A flashback shows this isn't the only loss he's grieving, and that leads him to make a dramatic decision – he's stepping down as Highfather, and allowing someone else to lead New Genesis into its new era. Now named Izaya once again, he seeks quiet contemplation rather than leadership – and the most peaceful planet in the galaxy is suddenly thrown into flux. Love lost. Via DC Comics. To calm nerves, Mister Miracle proposes a ceremonial feast traditional on New Genesis, and that gives us the opportunity to see these alien heroes in a very unusual setting – at peace, as well as bringing in some lesser-used Kirby creations. There are a lot of great character bits along the way, especially for Big Barda. But at the same time, the Justice League's representatives are investigating the other arrivals that have gone to ground – and Max Lord is becoming involved with them in a way I didn't expect. He's always the type to make deals with devils – but if the last panel of this segment is what it looks like, this may be a new low for him. This issue has plenty of suspense, but it definitely is the lowest-key issue of the run so far. I think that's something that works very well, as after the chaos of this first arc, pulling back on the impact of the war was essential. I think this run is going to become essential read for fans of the Fourth World. To find reviews of all the DC issues, visit DC This Week. GeekDad received this comic for review purposes. Liked it? 'Superman' director's brother says anti-immigrant MAGA people are 'against the American way'

The brother of "Superman" director James Gunn, actor Sean Gunn, defended his sibling on Monday night following backlash to the director's recent political messaging about the film. Sean Gunn spoke to Variety from the red-carpet premiere of the latest "Superman" film, stating that anybody in America who is against immigrants is not for America. "People who say no to immigrants are against the American way," he said. Sean Gunn, who plays Maxwell Lord in the upcoming superhero film, defended his brother after the director took heat for insisting his movie was political and that "Superman" is an immigrant in an interview with The Times that was published on Sunday. "Superman is the story of America," James Gunn told the U.K. outlet. "An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost." The character, first introduced in 1938, was born from the imagination of writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster in Cleveland, Ohio. In the comics, Superman is the sole survivor of the planet Krypton, sent to Earth by his parents as their world faces destruction. James Gunn also said that the film will be "about politics" and "about morality." The filmmaker added that certain parts of the country will view it differently. "Yes, it plays differently," he said. "It's about human kindness. And obviously, there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them." Gunn's words come as there is strong opposition among liberals to President Donald Trump's efforts to deport millions of illegal immigrants. While on the red carpet, James Gunn's brother Sean defended the director from "MAGA" people — as Variety described them — being critical of his recent pro-immigrant statements. Neither the interviewer, nor Gunn, made any distinction between legal or illegal immigrants. "My reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about," Gunn said. "We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants and if you don't like that, you're not American." Variety also asked James Gunn about his interview comments while on the red carpet, though the filmmaker was less candid with his responses. "I think this movie's for everybody. I don't have anything to say to anybody. Like, I'm not here to judge people," he said, adding, "I think this is a movie about kindness and I think that's something everyone can relate to." While at the premiere, actor Nathan Fillion was also asked about MAGA criticism of the filmmaker's recent statement. Fillion, who plays the superhero Green Lantern in "Superman," gave a brief reply, "Aw, somebody needs a hug. Just a movie, guys. It's just a movie." Representatives for both Gunn brothers did not immediately reply to Fox News Digital's requests for comment.

‘Peacemaker' Season 2 Trailer Solves The ‘Snyderverse' Problem

Peacemaker Peacemaker season 2 is not out until August 21 of this year, but now it's dropped a new trailer that both A) looks good and B) seems to be solving a continuity problem between James Gunn's season 1 in the DCEU and the season 2 that he says is in the DCU instead. How exactly does that work? Well, the end of the Peacemaker season 2 seems to broadcast what's happening here. In it, John Cena's Peacemaker walks through a door to find…another Peacemaker who pulls a gun on him and asks who he is. It seems almost certain this is DCU Peacemaker versus DCEU Peacemaker. The concept here may be that the DCU storyline exactly mirrors the DCEU storyline from season 1, only in another universe, and but it is in the DCU despite the similar events and will fork off to the DCU proper after this, hence why it shares characters and actors. Here, we see things directly connected to the DCU like Peacemaker auditioning for Maxwell Lord's Justice League in front of Hawkgirl and Hal Jordan, who will all be in Superman. But this appears to be a DCU where the events of the DCEU show also have happened. Not just that, but also Gunn's Suicide Squad where Peacemaker kills Rick Flagg. It's not clear when Peacemaker or the rest of this cast may show up in the DCU afterward, as I don't believe it's meant to continue on for a third season, that we know about, at least. But this is a way for Gunn to shave off his small portion of the DCEU without losing the continuity he set up there. Albeit this still raises at least some questions like…is Margot Robbie still the DCU's Harley Quinn? I doubt that's going to be answered any time soon, and interviews have indicated she's done with the role. Is this all necessary for Gunn to do? I mean, maybe not, but you can't blame him for not wanting to throw his old work in the bin. This is comic universe, you can do any weird multiverse stuff you want, so you might as well play that card here. I am certainly curious to see how this plays out in practice, and if season 2 will connect more directly to Superman or other projects. At the very least, it certainly feels like Amanda Waller is going to be bouncing around going forward with a central role in many DC storylines. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
