2 teens shot during drive-by shooting in Edmonton's Strathearn area

Two teens were hit by bullets during a drive-by shooting in a south-central Edmonton neighbourhood last week. The Edmonton Police Service said it happened around 8:20 p.m. on May 23 near 92 Street and Strathearn Drive. Police said a group of young people were in the area when a suspect in a black Mazda 3 car fired several shots at them. Stock image of a 1st Generation (2003-2009) Mazda 3 Sedan. Edmonton Police Service Two teenage boys, ages 14 and 17, were hit by the bullets. As of Tuesday night, one of them had been released from the hospital, while the other one was in stable condition. 'We were quite shocked when we heard,' Cheryl said of the shooting. 'It's very unusual for the area — you know, it's pretty safe. That's why we walk this area all the time.' 'Young people should be safe. We like to see them out here rollerblading, walking, whatever.' Tweet This Click to share quote on Twitter: "Young people should be safe. The fact the shooting happened during daylight on an evening when plenty of people would have been outside enjoying themselves alarmed them, Neil added. 'The sun's out and it was calm. Like, (if) it would have been two in the morning, maybe a bit more understandable,' he said. Resident Jim Kinney said police canvassed the neighbourhood, asking residents for any info they may have. 'Shocked, I suppose, is the first reaction — but somewhat resigned to the fact that it seems to be happening more and more,' Kinney said. He said the upper-middle-class neighbourhood is generally quiet and safe, and hopes that doesn't change. Story continues below advertisement 'This is a nice little area, a little piece of paradise. Hopefully it's once and we don't have it happen again because it is quite nice to live here.' It's not known if the shooter and victims knew each other or if it was a random drive-by shooting. 'Why this neighbourhood? Is it a resident, is it somebody that frequents the neighbourhood?' Kinney said. Police said officers continue to investigate and no other information is available. Anyone with any information, security camera or dashcam footage related to this incident is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Three seriously injured in Lake Forest during early Tuesday morning car crash on Route 41

Police were called to the scene at 1:46 a.m. Tuesday when a silver Mazda 3 was heading northbound on Route 41 at what authorities thought was a high rate of speed when it swerved off the road to the right, leading the vehicle to roll over at least once, according to Lake Forest police. 'The car flipped at least once,' Deputy Police Chief Kevin Zelk added. A passenger from the car was ejected from the vehicle, and the other two victims had to be removed by the Lake Forest Fire Department, authorities said. Zelk did not identify the victims, but noted they were all from Lake County. They were all transported to Libertyville's Advocate Condell Medical Center. 'Nobody is declining, but the injuries were pretty significant,' Zelk said. A hospital spokeswoman did not comment on their status, citing health privacy laws. Alcohol and excessive speed were suspected of being involved in the crash, and charges are pending, but not expected to be filed for several weeks. 'We are investigating whether or not the driver was impaired,' Zelk said. The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team was called in to assist with the investigation, Zelk added. Northbound Route 41 was closed to traffic for several hours early Tuesday due to the investigation, Zelk said. The roadway was completely reopened around 8 a.m.

What's the best car to replace two elderly hatchbacks?

Dear Alex, My 14-year-old Mazda 3 and my wife's 22-year-old Toyota Corolla are both approaching 140,000 miles and we will soon need to replace them. Learning to operate modern touchscreen controls seems like unnecessary stress – likewise having to switch off a load of driver aids before setting off. We don't want an EV, nor a hybrid, while I've had bad experiences with diesels. Which more recent cars without too much complexity should we consider? – RJ Dear RJ, Unfortunately, I think you're going to have to put up with a certain amount of learning if you want to update to something more recent. Most modern cars – even those a few years old – have a touchscreen of some sort through which at least some of the functions, usually the satellite navigation and radio, are controlled. The same goes for advanced driver assistance systems, abbreviated to ADAS; by July 2022, lane keeping assist was mandatory and in preparation for this most manufacturers were installing it on their latest models by 2020. You'll want to avoid anything built after 2024, when speed limit warnings also became mandatory. I propose aiming for a car in which deactivation of these systems is simple and which relies less on a touchscreen. As it happens, the current Mazda 3 fits the bill. While an early example of the latest model will have lane departure warnings, you can easily turn them by pressing and holding one button for a few seconds each time you start the car. Simple climate controls make the interior easy to understand, while the screen is controlled by a rotary dial rather than being touch-sensitive, which makes it easier to scroll through the menus. Most 3s are mild hybrids – yes, sorry, the H word, but mild hybrids are barely any more complex than pure petrol cars, so still worth considering. £15,000 is more than enough to get you into a low-mileage, service-historied Sport Lux from 2020 or so. If that's a little too steep, how about a Kia Ceed? The latest Ceed may be a little dull but it's also comfortable, competent and very reasonably priced. The 1.0-litre T-GDI 3 I found, from 2019 and with 44,000 miles and a full history, is yours for just shy of £12,000 – and it should still have a year's worth of the original warranty left. This Ceed has a touchscreen, but it's fairly easy to use thanks to physical shortcut keys and a proper climate control panel – and the lane keeping assist can also be turned off with one long button press. But if neither of these is quite simple enough, how about a Dacia? A Sandero is about as simple as it gets if you want a car that's only a few years old, although I suspect it might be too small for your needs. I also found a 2020 Duster 1.0 TCe Comfort with 37,000 miles and a full history for £10,209. Dusters of this age famously lack most modern driver assistance functions. Granted, you will have to contend with a touchscreen – but it is a very basic system that's easy to get to grips with.
