NFL Top 100: 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey No. 73, will face Cardinals twice in 2025
49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is No. 73 in 'NFL Top 100' and will face the Cardinals twice in 2025. Last week, the NFL had its third week of revealing players in the "NFL Top 100." After two players were revealed on Monday and another on Tuesday the Arizona Cardinals will face in 2025, a fourth was revealed later in the week, one who will see the Cardinals twice in 2025. That would be San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. Despite playing in four games last season, he was still ranked No. 73 after being the No. 3 player in the top 100 in 2024. Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun recalled how bad a game he had against McCaffrey years ago. "He's a tough tackle," he said, recalling how he missed three or four tackles against McCaffrey in that game. It made him question whether he could cut it as a full-time defensive player. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley said, "you have to account for him in so many ways, physical and pass pro. He can run routes like a receiver." McCaffrey's quarterback, Brock Purdy, called him "Mr. Do-it-all." He only had 202 yards in four games last season, but he has been a Cardinals killer. In seven career games against the Cardinals, he is 6-1 against them and has 580 rushing yards and five touchdowns, and he has caught 44 passes for 426 yards and another five scores. That is 1,006 total yards and 10 total touchdowns. The Cardinals face the 49ers in Week 3 and Week 11. One ridiculous stat perfectly highlights Christian McCaffrey's dominance
A rough 2024 season that featured a pair of injuries has put San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey somewhat in the national rearview entering the 2025 season. However, a stat posted by the 33rd Team helps highlight just how good McCaffrey is when healthy, and provides optimism for the 49ers about their 29-year-old RB as they gear up for training camp. Last season McCaffrey played in only four games because of Achilles tendinitis and a knee injury that ultimately sidelined him for the season. In four games he managed only 348 total yards and no touchdowns. The down year pushed the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year all the way down to No. 73 on the NFL's Top 100 list for 2025. The 33rd Team pointed out that despite a down year in 2024, the larger sample size tells us McCaffrey is still one of the best dual-threat RBs in the sport: This is exactly why the 49ers have and will continue to lean on McCaffrey as long as he's able to suit up for them. His skill set as a runner is good, but it's his receiving prowess that separates him from the rest of the NFL. He's excellent both out of the backfield and when lining up in the slot. The danger he presents defenses forces them to dedicate additional resources to ensuring he's not getting wide open for easy throws and big runs after the catch. That threat gives head coach Kyle Shanahan additional avenues to expose weaknesses in a defense either with McCaffrey or with a player finding space opened because of the RB. It's risky banking on a 29-year-old RB coming off an injury-riddled season. McCaffrey's stats with San Francisco help paint a picture of why the potential reward is worth that risk. It most recently ranked 400th in the U.S. with 789 recorded births in 2024, per the SSA. But, in the eyes of Culpo and McCaffrey, Colette is one-of-one. 'Luckiest man on the planet,' McCaffrey, a running back for the San Francisco 49ers, wrote next to a photo of him and Colette on his Instagram Stories. 'The scariest and most rewarding of all experiences,' Culpo wrote in an Instagram story of her own. 'As soon as (McCaffrey) came into the room I felt most at peace. Look at the grip.' In a separate story, Culpo praised McCaffrey as the 'best daddy in the world.' Many of the couple's close friends and colleagues took to the comment section to congratulate them on the new arrival. 'Next chapter, motherhood,' she wrote in the caption on March 10. In an interview with People, published March 26, Culpo opened up about what she's looking forward to as a first-time mom. 'I'm so excited and grateful to be pregnant. I've been dreaming of this for a long time,' she said at the time. 'It's very special.' One of the things she was looking forward to the most was making 'traditions' with her new family. 'It is fun growing your family with someone that you really love and just being able to see Christian as a dad will be really exciting,' she told People. 'I just know he's going to be such a good partner and husband and father,' she added. 'I can't wait to see him step into that role. It will just be unlike any other experience.' On May 18, the couple took to Instagram to share a video of gender predictions from their baby shower. 'I am your mom and I have no idea what you are. I thought you were a boy, now everyone thinks you're a girl, so I think you're a girl, but watch you be a boy,' Culpo said at the start of the video. 'I'm your dad and I think you're going to be a boy,' McCaffrey added in the next clip. One month later, the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary — two weeks before their baby's birth. 'One year down, with something new, Soon it's more than just us two,' Culpo wrote in a caption on Instagram. 'Best day ever, best year ever… happy anniversary to the love of my life. So so thankful.' 49ers' Christian McCaffrey is One to 'Root For' in 2025
49ers' Christian McCaffrey is One to 'Root For' in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has been one of the best running backs in the league since his rookie season. Advertisement McCaffrey reinforced his elite status with San Francisco in 2023 by leading the league with 1,459 rushing yards while adding 14 touchdowns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and won Offensive Player of the Year, was elected First-Team All-Pro and finished third in MVP voting. But then came 2024, and his elite status was questioned ... because of his health. Tom Blair has labeled McCaffrey as the 49ers' candidate of "one player to root for" in 2025. "I know McCaffrey doesn't really need a boost in the fan department. This is more about a certain level of greediness I'm feeling about one of the most prolific offensive talents of our time," Blair wrote. "McCaffrey has topped 1,800 scrimmage yards in four separate seasons, a total surpassed by just four other players in NFL history (Hall of Famers Walter Payton, LaDainian Tomlinson, Marshall Faulk and Emmitt Smith). He did it as recently as 2023, when he hit the 2k mark for the second time -- then lost most of last season to injuries, finishing with less than 100 touches for the first time in his career. Maybe 2024 was just a natural step-down from such a high workload, and he'll easily bounce back again, just as he did following a similar blip in production following his first 2,000-scrimmage-yard effort, in 2019 with the Panthers. Then again, he's 29 now, with that much more mileage on his legs. Advertisement "Knowing how time and age generally work, it would be great to get to watch at least one more mega-wattage McCaffrey campaign." Durability has always been a question for McCaffrey, and ESPN noted that as the only problem with the former Stanford standout's game. "Durability is the one thing holding McCaffrey back," Jeremy Fowler wrote. "He has missed 10 or more games in three of his past five NFL seasons. 'He's a great player, but he's always had durability issues, even in college,' an NFL personnel executive said. 'He's an elite trainer and takes great care of himself. He's just not a big body and will lose a step eventually.' A return to 2023 form would put McCaffrey back in the MVP conversation. When he's healthy, he always produces. "In fact, McCaffrey has four seasons with at least 1,800 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns. The only players with more are all Hall of Famers: [LaDainian] Tomlinson, Marshall Faulk, Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton (five each)."
