49ers being careful with superstar's workload after 2 major injuries last season
Keeping running back Christian McCaffrey healthy is an essential piece of a successful training camp for the San Francisco 49ers. McCaffrey missed the first eight weeks of last regular season because of bilateral Achilles tendinitis that flared up early in training camp and cost him the preseason. Then he hurt his knee in Week 13 and missed the remaining five weeks. The 49ers offense sputtered without the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. Now this year they're aiming to keep him healthy by limiting his workload some in camp. 'This has been part of the plan," Shanahan said. "Christian gets frustrated with it. He wants to be out there, he wants to do everything, but Christian also is very smart and knows what the deal is and knows that we do need to protect him from himself. So, he's on board with it all, but I know he is feeling good and when he feels good he doesn't like days off. But he understands why he's got to.' Given McCaffrey's importance to the offense it's difficult to fault the 49ers for anything they want to do in camp to make sure he's ready to go for Week 1. They can't just put him on ice and have him out of shape and knocking off rust for the first several weeks, but they also can't give him every first-team rep at every practice. So far McCaffrey has participated throughout the offseason without any issues, but it's hard to envision the 49ers doing anything to put unnecessary wear-and-tear on the 29-year-old RB in camp. 49ers' cornerback Deommodore Lenoir discusses June arrest in Los Angeles
San Francisco 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir addressed reporters Sunday for the first time since he was arrested for obstruction of justice in Los Angeles in June and apologized for his actions. 'I'm different than who I was five years ago — being at the right place and not really hanging out in areas that I shouldn't be,' Lenoir said. 'So I want to apologize to my teammates, the organization and to my coaches and to my family for a mistake.' Lenoir, a 25-year-old Los Angeles native, was arrested on June 27 when Los Angeles Police Department officers approached a group that included Lenoir and saw a gun inside a parked vehicle. When police requested the keys, a man threw them to Lenoir, who threw the keys to another man who tried to hide them. Lenoir was released on his own recognizance at 1:18 a.m. the next day. Lenoir's court date was initially set for Friday, but a spokesperson for the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office told the Chronicle last week that Lenoir's case had not been received. The L.A. city attorney generally has up to a year from the date of the alleged crime to file a misdemeanor charge. CMC and SpO2: Running back Christian McCaffrey trained throughout the offseason with his younger brother, Luke, a Commanders wide receiver who was a 2024 third-round pick. Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, who ranked fourth in the NFL in yards from scrimmage last year, also joined the brothers. 'He just hit us up and wanted to get some work in,' McCaffrey said. 'Obviously, somebody like that who I have the utmost respect for as a player and a person, I was fired up that he could join us for a little bit.' Robinson told reporters last week that he learned a lot about post-training recovery from McCaffrey, who uses an altitude training chamber known as the 'Stratosphere' as part of his routine. 'It's a new innovation, man,' Robinson said. 'We were 18,000 feet in the air, but we were like in a machine. … It was like the coolest thing ever.' Asked about the 'Stratosphere,' McCaffrey noted it's one of the 'gadgets and gizmos' he uses. 'There's the (hyperbaric) chamber, the hypoxic training, the breath work, the pool,' McCaffrey said. 'There's so many different things. We just try to take every little ounce. If you can find an advantage or an edge, we'll do it.' Hypoxic training, Christian? 'It's basically breath work where you fluctuate your SpO2 numbers to get a stem-cell flush into your system,' McCaffrey said. McCaffrey did spend his entire offseason in training-and-recovery mode. McCaffrey and his wife, model and actress Olivia Culpo, welcomed their first child, Colette Annalise, on July 13. 'It's been such a blessing,' McCaffrey said. 'I've been on cloud nine ever since she was born. It's definitely been special for me — life-changing, that's for sure. I'm grateful for my wife. She does a great job of letting me still keep football going and working my butt off.' Jennings exits: Wide receiver Jauan Jennings left practice early with a calf injury he suffered during team drills. Jennings was also sidelined during spring practices with a calf issue, and head coach Kyle Shanahan suggested he might have aggravated that injury. 'That's what he had in OTAs, so I'm sure it's similar,' Shanahan said. Jennings has participated in the first four practices of training camp despite seeking a new contract. Last year, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk didn't practice during training camp when he was seeking an extension, in part to avoid an injury. Aiyuk feigned neck and back injuries as part of his hold-in. Shanahan shelved: Shanahan hasn't assumed his customary practice role as the quarterback in certain defensive drills during training camp. In his place, general manager John Lynch 's son, Jack, a first-year defensive quality control coach, is tossing those passes. Why has Lynch taken his spot? 'He didn't take it, all right,' Shanahan said, smiling. 'I'm injured right now.' Shanahan explained that his throwing elbow began bothering him in December, but he continued to throw during practice. 'I think it ruined me,' Shanahan said. 'I keep waiting for it to heal. It won't heal. I'll probably have to fix it in February. It really sucks not being able to throw. Not just to (the players), but the tennis ball to my dog. Anything. I've got to fix this.' Apple added: The 49ers signed cornerback Eli Apple, 29, two days after corner Renardo Green suffered a hamstring injury in practice that's expected to sideline him for weeks, a league source said. Apple, a 2016 first-round pick, has six interceptions in an 82-start career that's included stints with six teams. Last year, Apple played 27 snaps in four games with the Chargers, who placed him on injured reserve with a hamstring injury he suffered in Week 12. Shanahan said he hoped Green could return during the week the 49ers have a joint practice scheduled with the Raiders on Aug. 14. Staff writer Noah Furtado contributed to this report.

Christian McCaffrey's injury remains a potential loophole in the 49ers' comeback aspirations
Christian McCaffrey's health remains a concern: Image via IG The NFL preseason is underway, and the San Francisco 49ers still don't seem ready to make a hot start. They are planning to start the camp this week, but without two of their crown jewels in stable health. Christian McCaffrey, the superstar running back, couldn't showcase his prowess in more than just four games last season as he suffered from a distorted Achilles and PCL injury. But now, the situation looks to be better, but the question it begs: what kind of better? Can he really show up for the 2025 regular season and help the 49ers get rid of the 6-11 curse with ease? Well, the answer is all but promising. Christian McCaffrey's health seems to be an unsolved puzzle for the 49ers The disaster started with a simple pre-season calf strain, but it eventually grew into a more serious Achilles tendinitis. The 28-year-old couldn't even think of lacing up his cleats for the first eight games of the season. However, after prolonged medical care, he made a remarkable comeback in week 9. But before the fans could even process the joy, he went down again, and this time with a season-ending PCL injury during a lackluster loss to the Buffaloes. Kyle Shanahan has high hopes of McCaffrey defying all the odds and being back to his full health before the season kicks in. He said that the RB is 'here and healthy' , and so is their most significant left tackle, Trent Williams. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Couple Decide To Go On A Diet, Here They Are A Year Later Daily Sport X Undo The other officials also suggested positive feedback on McCaffrey's ongoing healing. But we are still too early to reach a long-term conclusion. Sure, the offensive player of the year 2023 gives his all to be back in the lore. But it's just July, and it won't be a shell-shocking update if his two major injuries recur during September's high-octane schedule and affect his performances in some way or other. However, for now, all signs point toward smooth sailing. Christian McCaffrey teases a full-fledged return ahead in the season McCaffrey wasn't in the scene for so long. The 49ers RB room is typically leaned towards guns like Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, and emerging stars Jahmyr Gibbs and Bijan Robinson in the meantime. He knows he is still the guy the team needs to win games, no matter what fans anticipate about rookie Ashton Jeanty or anyone else. And the star running back behaves like that. On Monday, he fueled the return anticipation with a highly positive Instagram update featuring a few snaps of his sculpted physique after an intense workout. NFL Top 100: 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey No. 73, will face Cardinals twice in 2025
49ers RB Christian McCaffrey is No. 73 in 'NFL Top 100' and will face the Cardinals twice in 2025. Last week, the NFL had its third week of revealing players in the "NFL Top 100." After two players were revealed on Monday and another on Tuesday the Arizona Cardinals will face in 2025, a fourth was revealed later in the week, one who will see the Cardinals twice in 2025. That would be San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. Despite playing in four games last season, he was still ranked No. 73 after being the No. 3 player in the top 100 in 2024. Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Zack Baun recalled how bad a game he had against McCaffrey years ago. "He's a tough tackle," he said, recalling how he missed three or four tackles against McCaffrey in that game. It made him question whether he could cut it as a full-time defensive player. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley said, "you have to account for him in so many ways, physical and pass pro. He can run routes like a receiver." McCaffrey's quarterback, Brock Purdy, called him "Mr. Do-it-all." He only had 202 yards in four games last season, but he has been a Cardinals killer. In seven career games against the Cardinals, he is 6-1 against them and has 580 rushing yards and five touchdowns, and he has caught 44 passes for 426 yards and another five scores. That is 1,006 total yards and 10 total touchdowns. The Cardinals face the 49ers in Week 3 and Week 11. One ridiculous stat perfectly highlights Christian McCaffrey's dominance
A rough 2024 season that featured a pair of injuries has put San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey somewhat in the national rearview entering the 2025 season. However, a stat posted by the 33rd Team helps highlight just how good McCaffrey is when healthy, and provides optimism for the 49ers about their 29-year-old RB as they gear up for training camp. Last season McCaffrey played in only four games because of Achilles tendinitis and a knee injury that ultimately sidelined him for the season. In four games he managed only 348 total yards and no touchdowns. The down year pushed the 2023 Offensive Player of the Year all the way down to No. 73 on the NFL's Top 100 list for 2025. The 33rd Team pointed out that despite a down year in 2024, the larger sample size tells us McCaffrey is still one of the best dual-threat RBs in the sport: This is exactly why the 49ers have and will continue to lean on McCaffrey as long as he's able to suit up for them. His skill set as a runner is good, but it's his receiving prowess that separates him from the rest of the NFL. He's excellent both out of the backfield and when lining up in the slot. The danger he presents defenses forces them to dedicate additional resources to ensuring he's not getting wide open for easy throws and big runs after the catch. That threat gives head coach Kyle Shanahan additional avenues to expose weaknesses in a defense either with McCaffrey or with a player finding space opened because of the RB. It's risky banking on a 29-year-old RB coming off an injury-riddled season. McCaffrey's stats with San Francisco help paint a picture of why the potential reward is worth that risk.
