Matthew McConaughey opens up about finally returning to the big screen: ‘Remembered that acting is a vacation for me'

The wait is over. The man who once redefined the rom-com, then snagged an Oscar in a career reinvention few saw coming, has finally returned to the screen. After six years away from the spotlight, Matthew McConaughey is back, and he's bringing the slow-burning intensity that made him a Hollywood icon with The Rivals of Amziah King, which released this March. It's been a long road for the 55-year-old Texan, who stepped back from acting in 2016 following a remarkable run. During the first day on set of his new film, he wasn't afraid to show a little vulnerability. 'Is anybody else nervous except for me?' he asked the cast and crew. As the room erupted in laughter, McConaughey smiled and added, 'Alright, alright, alright, just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one.' As per Variety, the veteran actor felt like his boots had been in the closet for a bit too long. So why did McConaughey vanish from acting at the height of his career? 'I needed to write my own story, direct my own story on the page,' he says, reflecting on the years he spent out of the limelight. In 2020, he released Greenlights, his memoir that was equal parts autobiography, philosophical meditation, and wild road trip. He also voiced animated characters in Sing (2016) and Sing 2 (2021), but largely kept a low profile, focusing on family and self-discovery. McConaughey's return wasn't planned. It was inspired. When he came across the screenplay for The Rivals of Amziah King, written and directed by Andrew Patterson, something clicked. 'It's not where I grew up, but I know of these kind of people and these places and these kind of characters that live in the middle of the country,' McConaughey says. 'This group of people in southeast Oklahoma where the film takes place know the Constitution, they know the rules they are living by, and they're not looking for or getting approval from the rest of the world. I understand them.' Set in southeastern Oklahoma, the film centres on a reclusive beekeeper and his relationship with his foster son — an unlikely tale with grit. And being back on set reignited something in him. 'I remembered a couple of things,' he says. 'One, how much I truly enjoy performing. Two, I remembered, hey, McConaughey, you're pretty damn good at this. And three, I remembered that acting is a vacation for me, and what I mean by vacation is that when I'm performing, it's my singular focus. When I walk out the door in the morning, my wife says, 'go kick some ass. I got the kiddos. We're good.' That's vacation. Because I'm not multitasking. I'm not compartmentalising. I'm fully focused on finding the truth of my character.' And for audiences who've missed that signature mix of swagger and soul, The Rivals of Amziah King is more than just a comeback — it's a homecoming.

Matthew McConaughey Sends Strong 1-Word Message on Memorial Day

Beloved actor Matthew McConaughey uprooted his life with wife Camila Alves in 2008 when he moved away from Hollywood and relocated back to his home state of Texas. He's told the story several times, but McConaughey wasn't happy with his career at the time as Hollywood had him pegged as a rom-com only persona. "The romantic comedies remained my only consistent box office hits, which made them my only consistent incoming offers," McConaughey wrote in his memoir, according to IndieWire. "For me personally, I enjoyed being able to give people a nitty-minute breezy romantic getaway from the stress of their lives where they didn't have to think about anything, just watch the boy chase the girl, fall down, then get up and finally get her. I had taken the baton from Hugh Grant, and I ran with it." He previously told former NFL star quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning that he turned down over $14.5 million for a rom-com - a move that eventually kickstarted his post-romantic comedy career with hits like Mud, Dallas Buyer's Club and True Detective. "I declined the offer," McConaughey added. "If I couldn't do what I wanted, I wasn't going to do what I didn't, no matter the price." As McConaughey moved into a new direction he rose to super-stardom and became a voice fans looked to - even away from the big screen. On Monday, May 26, he used that voice to share just one word on Memorial Day: "remember." Along with a photo of a run-down house graced with the American flag, McConaughey's message was clear. "Memorial Day is an American holiday on the last Monday of May. It honors fallen service members of the U.S. military," the Wounded Warrior Project said. "Americans began to recognize Memorial Day in 1868, and the country established it as a federal holiday in 1971. Originally known as 'Decoration Day,' the holiday started with communities coming together to decorate the graves of those who died during service."Matthew McConaughey Sends Strong 1-Word Message on Memorial Day first appeared on Men's Journal on May 26, 2025

Matthew McConaughey, Tony Hawk Buy Property at Kelly Slater Wave Pool

Big names, big wave pools, big luxury – makes sense for a place like Texas, where everything is, well, you know. The Kelly Slater Wave Co.'s latest manmade surf park, the Austin Surf Club, has attracted a handful of A-list actors and athletes for the preliminary offerings of their residential properties, including Matthew McConaughey, Tony Hawk, and Drew Brees, according to the Austin Business Journal. While there's no set opening date for the wave pool or the accompanying properties – not yet at least – as we reported earlier this year, ground has been broken, and there's a first look at the dirt plot, soon to be home to one of the world's most innovative players in synthetic surfing. See below. Here's a little more about the project, per the website: 'In a groundbreaking partnership between Discovery Land Company and legendary surfer Kelly Slater, Austin Surf Club aims to redefine residential living by offering a 2,200 ft long surf basin equipped with state-of-the-art high-volume wave technology – a canvas for surfers of all ages and skill levels to perfect their craft. Indulge in farm-to-table dining experiences, and explore a world of well-being at the state-of-the-art spa, all within an innovative community that celebrates the essence of adventure and connection.'The location of the Austin Surf Club was formerly home to NLand Surf Park. Helmed by Doug Coors, the same Coors of the beer business, NLand opened in October of 2016, as one of the first artificial surfing operations on US soil during the modern wave pool boom. But the property sold in 2018. And it's not the first time that McConaughey has sampled Slater's synthetic surfing goods. Recently, he was out at the OG Lemoore facility getting whipped into waves by the inimitable Tahitian wave pool instructor to the stars, Raimana van Bastolaer. On that occasion, McConaughey went down; he wiped out while setting up for the tube. But with a residence at the incoming pool in Austin, the actor will have more opportunities to work on that stink bug stance. Maybe a successful tube, too? Stay tuned.
