Ballon d'Or 2026 odds: Scott McTominay's chances of glory ranked vs Liverpool, PSG and Barcelona superstars

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay has been included on the 30-man shortlist for the prestigious Ballon d'Or award for 2025. He becomes the first Scottish men's player to be named in the list since Rangers legend Ally McCoist, who finished 21st back in 1987. Denis Law remains the only Scotsman to have won the award after his triumph in 1964. The Ballon d'Or recognises the best players in world football and has been up for grabs since 1956. The likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane have all got their hands on the trophy. McTominay, who has 61 caps for Scotland, joined Napoli from Premier League giants Manchester United for a fee of £25.7million a year ago. He scored 12 goals in his debut season and won the Scudetto for a fourth time. He was also named as the Italian top-flight 'Most Valuable Player' and now joins this year's shortlist alongside Barcelona's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, England and Bayern Munich superstar Harry Kane, Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe and Liverpool title-winner Mohamed Salah. Here, the Edinburgh Evening News ranks McTominay's chances of scooping the award based on the latest odds provided by football betting site talkSPORT Bet.

Scottish firm in legal trademark row with McDonald's and Napoli

Giorgio Cozzolino has been sent legal letters challenging his bid to trademark the Scottish football ace's 'McFratm' nickname and use it for gin, pizza, coffee, whisky and restaurants, according to the Scottish Sun. The St Andrews businessman claims, however, that it wasn't inspired by McTominay – who was recently nominated for a prestigious Ballon D'Or. The term means 'my brother' in the Naples dialect. Cozzolino told The Scottish Sun: 'With McTominay playing in Napoli, there is more affinity between Scotland and the Italian city. 'It's a good time to strengthen our connection.' He added: 'I informed Napoli by email after registering my trademark application. "I'm open to discussions. "I'm not intending to fight, but to find a solution.'

Bruno Fernandes shows true colours after missing Ballon d'Or cut but ex-Man Utd star didn't

Bruno Fernandes has not been named in the 2025 Ballon d'Or list, but one of his former Manchester United team-mates did make the cut for the prestigious award after a standout season Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes has congratulated former team-mate Scott McTominay for his Ballon d'Or nomination. Fernandes, 30, was not included in the exclusive list after United's poor campaign last season. ‌ The best part of a year ago, McTominay parted ways with the Red Devils to move to Napoli. He instantly adapted to life in Serie A and quickly made a big impression on Antonio Conte. ‌ The Scot ended the campaign with 13 goals and six assists in 36 appearances in all competitions, as Napoli stormed to the Scudetto. His stellar performances earned him a place him among the elite of world football. ‌ He will be competing for the prize alongside Treble-winning Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembele, 17-year-old Barcelona sensation Lamine Yamal, ex-Leeds United star Raphinha, and many other top talents. McTominay's exit at United was orchestrated by ex-boss Erik ten Hag as part of a strategy to raise funds for a new central midfielder. United made a tidy sum of £25.7m in pure profit from the sale of the Scottish international. That was put towards the signing of Manuel Ugarte, who arrived from PSG for £42.1m with potential add-ons of £8.4m, but the sale of McTominay now looks like a big error of judgement. Despite missing out on the nomination, Fernandes showed his class by posting a personal congratulations to McTominay. He uploaded a post from the official Ballon d'Or Instagram account with the caption: "Buzzing for you my friend." ‌ McTominay is set to find out where he ranks among the world's best at the 69th Ballon d'Or ceremony, scheduled for September 22 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Despite his exit from Old Trafford, McTominay, during a recent interview at Wimbledon, showed no animosity to his former side. He said: "I always want the absolute best for Manchester United, it's been my life for 22-23 years. For me, I wish the club all the success in the world and I'll be with them every step of the way. I want them to do well." ‌ In another interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, he admitted his move to Naples was a huge step in his career and life. He said: "It gives you more mental strength. I've always lived very close to my mum, so I could go whenever I wanted. "Now I live 1,500 miles away so I can't just go home and see my mum, my family, my sister and my kids so it's different. But in life you sometimes have to take yourself out of your comfort zone and I've always prided myself on that. ‌ "I would never want to be in my comfort zone, and if I can go away anywhere and establish myself and do well, why not? Who's to stop me doing that?" While McTominay won Serie A, United endured a miserable campaign which saw them finish 15th. Their one chance of redemption in the Europa League also saw them lose 1-0 in the final to Tottenham Hotspur, ruling out any chance of them qualifying for Europe.

The nominations of Scott McTominay, of Napoli, and Real Madrid star Caroline Weir for the Ballon d'Or are equally historic. The last Scottish man to be nominated was Ally McCoist in 1987, while Weir is the first-ever woman from this country to make the cut. Weir's nomination is overdue, given her starring roles for Scotland, Manchester City, and Madrid. She also has a better goals-to-games ratio than her fellow midfielder McTominay, named Serie A's player of the year. Some among the Red Devils' faithful may have imagined his career was on a downward slope. Not McTominay, who now finds himself in the company of players like Barcelona's Lamine Yamal, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Ousmane Dembele, of Paris St-Germain.

Weir, meanwhile, scored ten goals and provided eight assists in 26 appearances for Real Madrid last season as Los Blancos finished second in La Liga F in Spain. She is the first Scot to ever be nominated for the Ballon d'Or Féminin, which was incepted in 2018. Among the contenders for her award include five of England's European Championship-winning squad in captain Leah Williamson, Lucy Bronze, Chloe Kelly, Alessia Russo and Hannah Hampton. Jim Baxter, Jimmy Johnstone, Billy Bremner, Graeme Souness, Gordon Strachan and Steve Archibald are among the Scots who have received Ballon d'Or nominations over the years.
