Ottawa man drowns in Meaford, Ont.

An Ottawa man has drowned while swimming in Georgian Bay: OPP. Thu., July 31, 2025. CTV NEWS/BARRIE Emergency services were called after a swimmer was found floating in the water in Meaford. Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Grey County paramedic services and the Meaford Fire Department found a man unresponsive in the water Wednesday at 1:18 p.m. The man was found at a waterfront property on Cedar Avenue in Georgian Bay. Rescue efforts were made by bystanders at the scene and CPR was performed until paramedics arrived. A 55-year-old Ottawa man was pronounced dead at the scene. OPP wants to thank the public and emergency responders who offered assistance.

Video captures boat theft in Meaford, police warn of recent increase in trailer thefts

A boat was stolen off a property in Meaford on Thursday afternoon, one of multiple recent trailer thefts in the area. Video surveillance shows two suspects in two separate vehicles drive onto the property near Grey Road 12 at around 2:11 p.m. The 20-foot Smoker Craft Phantom was on trailer at the time. The suspects exited a white Buick Enclave and blue Ford 250, attached the boat to the truck and drove off. Reports of man with firearm at Meaford Harbour leads to arrest

Provincial police say officers responded to the call and located an individual near a children's play area. Police placed the 32-year-old Port Elgin man in custody and discovered a replica airsoft handgun, OPP says. The man faces charges of being intoxicated in public, having an open container of liquor in an unauthorized place, possessing break-in tools, and failing to comply with undertaking. He was held in custody to await a bail hearing.

Counterfeit $20 bills increasing in Meaford

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Andrew Lahodynskyj Counterfeit $20 bills are circulating in the Municipality of Meaford. Police warn local businesses to watch out for the counterfeit bills. To determine if the bill is fake, watch for a holographic strip that shifts when tilted, a transparent window with metallic portrait, raised ink on the large '20' and 'Bank of Canada' and hidden numbers visible under light. Police urge the public to not confront the person, but instead to note their description and call the Grey Bruce OPP.
