While the Google Duo brand officially ended in 2022, some of its features were still used under the 'Legacy calls' section in Google Meet. The app for the latter is now showing a banner that reads, 'Meet calling will replace legacy (Duo) calling in September 2025.' Meet calls offer a superior video call experience compared to legacy Duo calls, with features like live captions, screen sharing, raise your hand, stackable effects, cloud encryption, and more. As part of the transition, some legacy Duo features won't be available in Meet. This includes Family Mode, Moments, and Knock Knock. AMAZON, AMAZ-OFF It comes after news that Amazon is to shut down an app that's been used by millions of people. There are major downsides for affected users – and you might even be owed a big refund. Millions of people using the Amazon Appstore will be cut off in mid-August. The closure affects anyone using the app on Android phones. Over 200 million people use the Amazon Appstore, around 1% of which come via Android gadgets. Google reveals 'Advanced Protection' for VIPs – and you can use it too An Amazon spokesperson told The Sun: "We've decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that's where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it." Amazon's Appstore is a rival to the default Google Play Store, letting you download apps and games. It launched on Android all the way back in March 2011. But on August 20, the Amazon Appstore will close – and any apps downloaded from it will no longer receive updates. That means support will end for all apps you've downloaded via the Amazon Appstore. They may become buggy or stop work entirely, and won't be able to receive any important security fixes either. In an FAQ, Amazon warned that these apps "will not be guaranteed to operate on Android devices". Amazon has already begun killing the Appstore off by blocking developers from uploading new apps to it. That change kicked in on February 20 this year.

Google Meet to fully replace legacy Google Duo calling in September 2025
Google will reportedly remove all remaining features of its former Duo calling service from the Meet app by September 2025. Although the Google Duo brand officially ended in 2022, some of its functionalities continued under the 'Legacy calls' section in Google Meet. Now, the company is set to unify its calling experience entirely under the Google Meet platform. According to 9to5Google, users of the Google Meet app are being informed that legacy Duo technology still powers some features, but 'Meet calls' is now the standard experience. This updated calling environment includes enhancements such as in-call chat, live captions, screen sharing, stackable visual effects, add-ons, and improved interfaces for tablets and foldable devices. Additional capabilities like hand-raising and access to premium features are available depending on the user's Workspace or Google One subscription. Features not moving to Google Meet Some popular Duo-specific features are not expected to be carried forward into Google Meet. These include: Family Mode Mirror Mode Knock Knock Sending emojis from the pre-call screen Additionally, smart displays such as the Nest Hub Max and other Nest devices currently support only legacy Duo calls. These devices will not receive the Meet calling update. Data backup instructions To export video messages: Go to Settings Tap on Message settings Select Export messages A 'Meet' folder will be created on the device To export legacy (Duo) call history: Go to Settings Tap on Calling settings (Legacy) Select Legacy calling account Tap on Manage Legacy calling history Choose Export legacy call history Users will receive a copy as a .CSV file

Three Square Food Bank offers meals over summer to Las Vegas valley students
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Three Square Food Bank is helping feed thousands of kids across the Las Vegas valley this summer with their 'Meet Up and Eat Up' program. With schools on break, many students in Clark County who rely on free school meals are left without a daily source of nutrition. To help bridge that gap, Three Square Food Bank is launching its 'Meet Up and Eat Up' program, offering free, nutritious meals to children throughout the summer. Starting Tuesday, May 27 through August 8, kids 18 and under can enjoy meals at convenient locations across the valley, including parks, libraries, rec centers, day camps, apartment complexes, and Boys & Girls Clubs. To reach even more families, refrigerated vans also deliver meals directly to selected apartment communities. Tara Nerida, Director of Programs and Research at Three Square, shared that the team prepares around 20,000 meals each week during the summer. Kids can enjoy a rotating menu featuring 20 different meal options, with some sites offering breakfast, lunch, or both. Everything is completely free—no sign-up or ID needed. For those looking to help, Nerida shared that every $1 donated to Three Square helps create 3 meals. Volunteers are also needed to help pack food boxes, deliver meals, and support distribution efforts across Southern Nevada. To find a meal site or learn how to help, click here or call 702-765-4030.
