MCC issues stern reminder to dog owners: Keep pets leashed or risk having them put down

MIRI (June 6): Dog owners are urged not to let their pets roam freely outside their homes for the safety of the animals and the well-being of the community.
Deputy Mayor Councillor Ariffin Mohamad issued the reminder during Miri City Council's (MCC) monthly Meet-the-People Session (MTPS) held at Krokop Market today (June 6).
'We have received complaints about stray dogs as well as pet dogs that have been roaming freely.
'We want to urge all dog owners to take responsibility for their pets. With the current concerns surrounding rabies, we are adopting a stricter stance. Any dog found roaming, whether stray or owned, will be put down,' he stressed.
He added that complaints on dogs roaming freely were among the issues raised during MTPS.
During the one hour session, MCC received a total of 17 complaints, with seven of them being issues concerning drains, overgrown grass, damaged roads, dirty market toilets, faulty streetlights and illegal hawkers.
These cases will be handled by MCC's Public Health Section, Public Maintenance and Cleanliness Section, Enforcement Section and Parking Section.
Ariffin stated that all the complaints will be referred to the relevant departments and sections within MCC for action.
'If there are complaints outside of MCC's jurisdiction, we will contact the relevant agencies. For instance, not all grass cutting works fall under MCC's jurisdiction. Some areas fall under the Public Works Department (JKR), thus we will contact JKR to take action,' he explained.
Commenting on the monthly MTPS initiative, Ariffin described it as a valuable platform for residents to voice their concerns directly to MCC representatives.
