UK allocates additional £5.5 million for refugees in Jordan

Ammon News - The United Kingdom has announced a new contribution of £5.5 million (US$7.43 million) to support the United Nations World Food Program's (WFP) food assistance operations for refugees residing in camps and host communities across Jordan. In a statement on Sunday, WFP Jordan said this latest funding marks the UK's second allocation to the program this year, following a previous contribution of £4 million (US$5.16 million) that helped avert cuts in aid to thousands of vulnerable refugees. WFP Country Director and Resident Representative in Jordan Alberto Correa Mendes said the renewed UK support arrives at a critical juncture and underscores Britain's ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance in the Kingdom. He noted that the funding will help sustain WFP's efforts to support the most vulnerable families amid severe funding constraints affecting WFP and other partners engaged in refugee assistance. Mendes highlighted that WFP still faces a funding gap of US$24 million to maintain reduced levels of monthly cash assistance through the end of this year and prevent further cuts to aid provided to refugees in camps and host communities. Currently, WFP provides cash assistance to 280,000 refugees in Jordan, primarily Syrians, to help them meet essential food needs. In July 2023, funding shortfalls forced the program to reduce monthly cash assistance from 23 Jordanian dinars to 15 Jordanian dinars per person, representing a one-third cut.

The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr spent 'two days' with director Sam Mendes over his biopic

Washington DC [US], July 6 (ANI): 'The Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr is making sure his biopic is just right and doesn't account for false information on his life. Starr admitted that he spent two days with director Sam Mendes reviewing the script of his biopic, as reported by Variety. In its recent profile on The Beatles drummer, the New York Times reported as quoted by Variety, Starr met with director Sam Mendes to discuss his own biopic. Over "two days," Starr went over the script with Mendes "line by line" and offered "extensive notes" to make sure it was as true to life as possible. One particular area of focus was on Starr's family and first marriage to Maureen Starkey Tigrett, reported Variety. "He had a writer -- very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I. That's not how we were. I'd say, 'We would never do that,'" said Starr as quoted by Variety. As per the outlet, Starr added that he was quite comfortable with his depiction after the edit session and trusted Mendes to carry through with the vision. Starr added, "But he'll do what he's doing, and I'll send him peace and love." Mendes plans to release four Beatles biopics in April 2028, each one from a different band member's perspective. The project is titled "The Beatles - A Four-Film Cinematic Event." It is currently unknown whether the movies will be released all at once or in weekly instalments throughout April. As for casting, Paul Mescal will play Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn will portray George Harrison, Barry Keoghan is Starr and Harris Dickinson will play John Lennon, reported Variety. The logline for the four-part saga reads, "Each man has his own story, but together they are legendary," as quoted by Variety. 'The Beatles' were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The core lineup of the band comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. This music band is considered one of the most successful and influential bands in Western music history. (ANI)

Diogo Jota's agent in tears speaking after morgue visit where bodies were taken

Agent Jorge Mendes was among those to visit the mortuary where Diogo Jota and his brother's bodies were being held on Thursday after the Liverpool star's tragic death in a car accident Diogo Jota's agent, Jorge Mendes, visited the mortuary where the late Liverpool star and his brother's bodies were being held in floods of tears. The 28-year-old forward lost his life in a tragic car accident alongside his younger sibling Andre Silva. Heartbreaking news broke on Thursday morning that Reds star Jota and his brother, 26, had passed away after a car accident in Zamora province, Spain. The Lamborghini they were travelling in suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking and veered off the road, catching fire. Both Jota and his brother were declared dead at the scene. ‌ Super agent Mendes, who counsels some of Portuguese football's biggest names, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, had long worked with the Liverpool forward, even since he arrived in the Premier League with Wolves. ‌ Mendes spoke to reporters after his visit to the Puebla de Sanabria mortuary in Zamora, where Jota and his brother's bodies were being kept until Thursday evening. "We lost two great people. Diogo is an example as a person, husband, son, professional. I still can't believe it, it's very difficult," confessed Mendes in tears. Mendes arrived alongside Jota's mother and travelled to Spain to be with the grieving family. Jota and his brother's bodies were kept at the location until Thursday evening, when the hearses departed for the Liverpool forward's hometown of Gondomar, near Porto in Portugal. They arrived just before midnight and were met by crowds of mourning fans, many of whom applauded as the vehicles arrived almost 24 hours after the tragic crash. Jota and his brother's funerals are set to take place at 10am on Saturday morning. A vigil is due to take place at Sao Cosme Chapel before a funeral service at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar. Many fellow clients of Mendes and international team-mates have paid their respects to the late Jota, including Portugal captain Ronaldo, who wrote on Instagram: "It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. ‌ "To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you." Current Fenerbahce manager Mourinho also released a statement: "The loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva is a great tragedy and an immense injustice for someone who was so young and had so much life ahead of him. I send my deepest condolences to all their family and friends." ‌ Manchester City's Ruben Dias is another who shared the pitch with Jota for Portugal. He also relayed his heartache, saying: "I still can't believe it. You won your first Premier League, we won the Nations League together, and you got married. It doesn't make sense. "We will not forget you, as a man, as a father, as a brother, as a son and as the tireless and talented team-mate you always were on the field. May you both rest in peace." Ringo Starr Helped Rewrite Scenes for the Beatles Biopics: I ‘Would Never Do That'

Don't worry, Beatles fan: Ringo Starr is involved in that upcoming four-part Beatles biopic. The iconic drummer recently told The New York Times that he met with director Sam Mendes to go through one of the scripts line-by-line. The duo collaborated together for two days in April 2025. While Starr did not cite which out of the assumed four scripts he reviewed, Jez Butterworth ('Ford v Ferrari'), Peter Straughan ('Conclave') and Jack Thorne ('Adolescence') are all announced as writing the screenplays. More from IndieWire Michael Madsen, Dead at 67: A Gifted Character Actor and One of Quentin Tarantino's Finest Collaborators Rob Reiner on the Making of His Almost-Didn't-Happen Comedy Classic 'This Is Spinal Tap' Starr said he gave 'extensive notes' to director Mendes while fact-checking the scripts. The scenes in particular that depicted Starr's family and his first wife, Maureen Starkey Tigrett (whose casting has not yet been announced), were among the sequences that Starr urged to have reworked. 'He [Mendes] had a writer — very good writer, great reputation, and he wrote it great, but it had nothing to do with Maureen and I,' Starr said. 'That's not how we were. I'd say, 'We would never do that.'' Starr added, 'But he'll do what he's doing, and I'll send him peace and love.' Barry Keoghan will portray Starr in the project, which is being referred to as 'The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event.' Harris Dickinson will portray John Lennon, with Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison. Starr was married Tigrett from 1965 to 1975. The couple had three children, former Oasis/Who drummer Zak Starkey, plus Jason and Lee. Starr later married actress and model Barbara Bach in 1981. Starr previously told Entertainment Tonight that he approves of Keoghan's casting. 'I believe he's somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many,' he joked. Mendes will direct all four biopics, each of which will center on one band member's POV during their astronomical rise to fame. Per an official announcement, the films will 'intersect' with each other and 'tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history.' The first installment is set to be in theaters in 2027 from Sony Pictures. 'I'm honored to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,' Mendes said in a press statement.
