Next Mercedes-AMG C63 Will Get A PHEV Six-Cylinder Motor As Rumors About Its Powerplant Continue To Swirl
I know you're tired of hearing what motor is going to be under the hood of the next Mercedes-AMG C63. Hell, I'm getting tired of writing about it. It seems like every couple of weeks, there's a new piece of information or a new rumor about what sort of engine will power Benz's compact sports sedan. Well, the current flavor of the week is a plug-in hybrid straight-six motor. The change from the current C63's much-maligned PHEV turbo-four to the new turbo-six is expected to come as part of a midcycle refresh of the sedan in 2026, according to Autocar. Mercedes-Benz confirmed to the outlet that it will move on from the four-popper it introduced in 2022. Despite the fact the 2.0-liter engine and rear-mounted electric motor put out 671 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque (making it the most powerful C63 ever), it never really won over consumers who missed the big ol' V8 previous C63s had. Now, the German automaker is going to try something new. When the facelift comes around next year, the C63 will be powered by a new-ish plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder motor. I say "new-ish" because it's not really a new engine. It's just an updated version of what can already be found in the E53, GLC53 and CLE53. It'll just have even more horsepower than it does in those applications, Autocar reports. Specs aren't exactly pinned down yet, but it's expected the motor will put out well over 650 hp and 650 lb-ft torque. I wouldn't be shocked if it bested the numbers set by the I4 C63. You can't have a new car that's less powerful than the old one. That's sacrilege. It's also expected to do away with the rear-mounted electric motor in favor of an electric motor placed between the engine and gearbox. The upcoming CLE63 coupe and convertible will get a flat-plane-crank version of AMG's M177 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8. It would be sort of confusing — and honestly, a non-starter for most — if the CLE63 made do with a four-popper while the CLE53 got a straight-six. We previously reported on rumors that the V8 would find its way into the C-Class as well, but for now, that doesn't seem to be the case. Here's more on why there's not going to be a V8 under the hood of the C63, from Autocar: Engineers involved in the C-Class programme say packaging constraints within the model's MRA platform make the adoption of the new AMG V8 unfeasible. "It requires more space, not just in terms of physical dimensions but also for associated cooling systems and crash protection measures," Autocar has been told. The current C-Class's engine bay, optimised for four- and six-cylinder engines, would require significant structural changes to accommodate the V8 - changes that would likely necessitate a fresh round of crash testing and regulatory approval, which our sources suggest isn't viable at this stage of the model cycle. The other big update coming to the C63 is sure to piss off the anti-screen crowd. Get ready for the Superscreen display and the MB:OS operating system to make an appearance in the new AMG. Sorry to let you all down. Regardless, if this report from Autocar is to be believed (and I've got no reason to doubt it), it finally puts to bed the question of what'll be under the hood of the next C63, and I — for one — am grateful for that. Mercedes Officials Reportedly Deny AMG C63 Will Go Back to V-8 Power
It's only been a week since Autocar reported the Mercedes-AMG C63 would switch from its four-cylinder PHEV powertrain to a V8, but a new report from Wards Auto is already splashing cold water on the idea. The conflicting report, issued March 3, cites senior Mercedes officials denying the rumors that a V-8 will find its way into the current generation C63. Which report is true? Who knows — and even if AMG is planning on cramming a V-8 into the C63, it's likely any questioning on the matter will be brushed off to not dissuade folks from buying the current four-cylinder PHEV car. As a reminder, this is the official statement Mercedes provided Road & Track when questioned about the V8 rumors last week: 'Mercedes-AMG is developing a new V-8 engine. However, please understand we do not discuss future product plans." One future product plan Mercedes did reveal to Wards, though, is that a new mild-hybrid V-8 engine will debut in the CLE-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. This news confirms part of Autocar's report from the other week, where it was suggested the AMG CLE63 would be the first model to enjoy AMG's new eight-cylinder engine. This new report is also consistent with the rumor that the new V-8 will switch from a cross-plane to flat-plane crank design. It's going to be based on the current 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 architecture, but the flat-plane crank should give it a significantly different character than current and past AMG V-8s: expect a higher-revving engine with a higher-pitched tone due to this new design. Plus, its more compact size will allow Mercedes to fit the V-8 into cars that may not have been engineered for them from the outset. Think both C63 and GLC63, two fresh AMG models that made the switch from eight- to four-cylinder power this time around. We'll need to just wait and see at this point concerning the C63's fate. With one report claiming one thing and another suggesting the exact opposite, it's a toss-up as to whether or not this new motor eventually worms its way under the C63's hood. The Mercedes-AMG C63 Will Have Its V-8 Back by 2026, Report Claims
We'll believe it when we see it, but the Mercedes-AMG C 63 might be reunited with its beloved V-8 as soon as 2026. A new report from Autocar, citing anonymous 'sources within the German brand,' claims that a new eight-cylinder AMG motor is coming for various models — the most notable one, for now, being the C63 that's currently motivated by a four-cylinder turbocharged plug-in hybrid powertrain. The new V-8 is reportedly pegged to first see the light in the upcoming AMG CLE 63 — which has been spotted in camouflaged form boasting a characteristic eight-cylinder sound — then roll out to other models. The details of the engine in the report give us even more reason for excitement than the added cylinders. Autocar claims AMG will use its familiar 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, but switch to a flat-plane crank design like that featured in the AMG GT Black Series. The reasoning? It would make for a more compact package, allowing the engine to fit in vehicles that weren't engineered with an eight-cylinder motor in mind. Mercedes is also rumored to use a mild-hybrid system to aid efficiency and providing an extra electric boost, to boot. Could all of this be smoke and mirrors? Sure, but we think it has a decent chance of being on the level, because just last week Mercedes-Benz confirmed it was developing a 'next-generation, high-tech electrified V-8." It did not go so far as to specify which models said V-8 would be found in, but vehicles like the upcoming CLE63 and C63 certainly would make sense as potential homes. (Road & Track asked Mercedes if it could provide any additional details about its plans; we'll update this post upon hearing back.) Autocar's story also suggests that even though some AMGs would be powered by V-8s, artificial sound generation could be even bolder than before. If Mercedes does go with a flat-plane crank design, the engine note will likely be higher-pitched than the cross-plane V-8s most AMG buyers are accustomed to. The additional artificial sound would theoretically make up for the deep chop-chop and burbles associated with cars like the previous generation E63 and C63. Time will tell if AMG really does go back to V-8s, though. But in the meantime, make sure you check out our thoughts on the four-cylinder-powered C63 S E Performance on sale today.
