U.S. Tariffs Might Slash European Auto Sales By 20%
Mercedes-Benz GLC (Photo by Sjoerd van) Europe's auto exports to the U.S. could fall by just over 20% or 200,000 vehicles in 2025 if the new 25% tariff lasts for the whole year, French automotive consultancy Inovev said. The new tariff started April 3. It replaces the previous tariff of 2.5%. Inovev estimated total exports last year were just over 900,000, led by the Mercedes GLC, and Volvos XC90 and XC60. Volvo is owned by Geely of China. The U.S. is Europe's biggest auto export market, followed by Turkey with just over 600,000 and China's close to 500,000. European sales to the U.S. – the EU plus the U.K., were around 970,000 in 2018, slid to just over 700,000 in 2022, and have climbed steadily since then, according to Inovev. 'The leading exporting automakers are the Germans, with 26% from Volkswagen brands, 24% from Mercedes and 10% from BMW. This is followed by the Geely Group's Volvo and Tata Group's Jaguar Land Rover with 12%,' Inovev said in a report. Land Rover Defender The X1 is BMW's top seller in the U.S., followed by the 4 Series. The new Land Rover Defender is JLR's top seller, followed by the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. JLR announced last week it will pause shipments to the U.S. for a month, as it considers how to handle the cost of the 25% tariff. "As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions, including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid-to longer-term plans," JLR said in a statement. JLR sells about 100,000 vehicles a year in the U.S., its largest market. Total JLR sales are around 400,000. JLR reportedly has about two months of supply already in the U.S, which wouldn't be subject to the new tariff. Audi has also suspended U.S. shipments. In the report, Inovev pointed to the uncertain nature of the situation. 'What impact could this new additional tariff have on European exports to the USA? It will initially depend on the duration of this measure: 1 month? 1 year? More? The duration of this measure could depend on the pressure that could be exerted both by carmakers on American soil and supply chains, but also by the distributor network which risks seeing a drop in sales in the short term, in the event that there is no buying transfer to models produced on American soil,' Inovev said. BMW iX1 electric SUV (Photo by Sjoerd van) "In addition, the rate of this surcharge could also vary over time if negotiations open between the USA and Europe. If this additional tariff were to run throughout 2025 at a constant rate of 25%, Inovev estimates that exports could decrease by 200,000 compared to 2024.' If the tariff continued through 2025 or into 2026 automakers might open new factories in the U.S. or transfer European production to existing U.S. factories. VW subsidiaries Porsche and Audi could move some production to its U.S. factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Mercedes has a U.S. factory in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, BMW in Spartanburg, South Carolina and Volvo in Charleston, South Carolina.

Police release CCTV footage of ‘targeted' shooting on Melbourne street
Police probing a brazen street shooting say the 'planned and targeted attack' could have hurt innocent bystanders. A man was shot in the ankle after allegedly being lured to a home in Fawkner, in Melbourne's north, under the pretence of providing a quote for a trades job. In footage released on Monday, the alleged victim is seen arriving in Denys Street just after 9.30am on 3 October last year. A different man exits a white 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC and runs towards him, shooting him in the left ankle. The bullet travelled straight through his ankle before exiting and hitting his right foot. The alleged victim was rushed to hospital with serious injuries which he still requires ongoing treatment for. The footage shows the shooter running back to the waiting car, and fleeing the scene. The vehicle was bearing cloned plates, 1NB7FC, and has not been found. Investigators said the address was chosen randomly and the incident was not connected to anyone living on that street. Sign up for Guardian Australia's breaking news email Another witness at the scene of the incident provided a description of the man – he is believed to be of African appearance, around 182cm tall, with a slim build, dark hair and brown eyes. Sign up to Breaking News Australia Get the most important news as it breaks after newsletter promotion Det Insp Adam Tilley said police believed the incident was a 'planned and targeted attack.' 'It would have been incredibly frightening for those on the street who were simply going about their daily lives at 9.30 on a Wednesday morning,' he said on Monday. 'We have a significant investigation into the incident under way and are keen to speak to anyone who has information about the shooting. 'This had the potential to impact innocent parties and we will do absolutely everything in our power to bring those involved before the court.'

Mercedes-Benz electrifies its worldwide bestseller
Mercedes-Benz EQC compact SUV has been part of the brand's bestselling GLC model range since 2021. Except for America, that is. So, years after other markets could buy one, it seems as if America will finally get one as well. It should make it to our shores sometime after the new one debuts in September at the IAA Auto Show in Munich, or at least that's the way it appears. Until then, the current lineup includes the 255-horsepower GLC300 mild hybrid or the 313-horsepower GLC350e plug-in hybrid with 54 miles of pure electric driving forthcoming all-electric GLC will be known as the Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology rather than the separate EQ nomenclature used until now. This is a continuation of incorporating EQ models first seen with the G580 with EQ Technology launch last year and integrates the electrified vehicles into the conventional powertrain lineup. The announcement comes as the newest GLC is undergoing winter testing in Sweden and the Arctic Circle, with temperatures as low as -13 degrees. 'During winter testing in Sweden, our new, all-electric GLC demonstrated its reliability and robustness even under extreme conditions. It represents innovation and quality – a fact we have proven in the Scandinavian winter,' said Christoph Starzynski, Mercedes-Benz Group AG's Vice President for Vehicle the Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology may look similar to other GLCs, it actually employs the automaker's platform, a new vehicle architecture dedicated to electric vehicles, that allows them to be built without the compromises that a petrol-vehicle platform might impose. It's fitted with an 800-volt architecture that supports a sustained charging rate of more than 320 kW. Range is expected to be an WLTP-rated 400 miles or so, which should net approximately 320 miles in EPA testing. The Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology comes with rear- and 4Matic all-wheel-drive configurations, with the latter disconnecting the front axle to increase efficiency. Online reports suggest the GLC EV produces about 480 horsepower, which is fairly healthy for the segment, although any official number has yet to be released. Interestingly, its new brake system incorporates the brake booster, master cylinder, and Electronic Stability Program Control into a single compact module that doesn't rely on mechanical linkage, although it does switch to a hydraulic fallback if needed. The system also optimizes the recovery of braking energy to extend the battery's charge. As on other Mercedes-Benz EVs, the climate control uses a heat pump that harnesses waste heat from the electric-drive unit, the battery and ambient air. It preconditions the battery to its optimal temperature prior to fast charging as well as controls cabin the most important aspect of the new Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology may be its appearance. While the Mercedes-Benz has only issued photos of the forthcoming compact SUV painted in swirling camouflage paint, the new vehicle's appearance lacks the obsessively ovoid shape that has plagued other Mercedes-Benz EQ models, the most egregious of which is the EQS that, when painted in white, looks like a suppository with tires. Thankfully, the Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology looks a lot more like its conventional counterparts, one that only happens to be powered by electrons. What the interior might look like remains unknown, however. By fitting its newest EV into an existing lineup rather than separating it out as a unique model, Mercedes-Benz is bowing to the realities of the market in 2025. This makes it appear a more mainstream choice and may make it easier to sell to those initially weary of electric SUVs. While exact details are not known about the new Mercedes-Benz GLC with EQ Technology, the fact that Mercedes-Benz is putting its newest technology into its biggest seller worldwide, rather than the S-Class, speaks volumes of its desire to reduce costs of EV technology through mass production. It also renders its EVs somewhat less of an upper one percent plaything and more of a sensible middle-class choice. Love reading Autoblog? I drove a $72,000 Mercedes-Benz plug-in hybrid. These 12 features make it a perfect first EV — without the range anxiety.
The Mercedes-Benz GLC350e is a new plug-in hybrid variant of the brand's GLC compact luxury SUV. I recently drove a 2025 GLC350e and was impressed by its powertrain, fancy cabin, and great tech. The GLC is the second best-selling model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup. The Mercedes-Benz GLC is one of the most popular compact luxury SUVs and the brand's second-best-selling model in the US. I recently had the chance to spend a week driving a 2025 GLC350e 4-Matic around the streets of Atlanta. I was impressed by the Merc's PHEV drivetrain, luxurious cabin, and comprehensive suite of comfort, convenience, and safety tech. The base rear-wheel-drive version of the GLC starts at $49,250, while the range-topping, high-performance version starts at $86,050. The PHEV variant starts at $59,900. Here are 12 features that show why it's a great luxury SUV with the benefit of an extended EV range. Handsome looks The GLC's front and rear facia incorporate the latest look of Mercedes' C-Class sedans, evolving the overall shape that made the first-generation variant so popular with consumers. The highlight of the new looks is the large mesh front grille comprised of small three-pointed starts surrounding the large Mercedes-Benz emblem in the center. My test car came with the AMG package, which includes attractive black, 20-inch multispoke wheels and perforated brake discs. Overall, the second-gen GLC is longer, lower, and boasts a slightly wider track than the vehicle it replaced. It's also more aerodynamic, with a 0.29 drag coefficient. Plug-in hybrid power The 350e is powered by a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, inline four-cylinder engine producing 201 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. It's paired with a 134-horsepower electric drive motor to produce 313 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque in total system output. Power gets to the pavement through a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The GLC PHEV is good for 25 MPG of fuel economy in combined driving when using just the internal combustion engine. Factor in the hybrid system, fuel economy increases to 64 MPGe, according to the EPA. Good electric range The GLC has 54 miles of all-electric range thanks to its 23.3 kWh battery pack. According to Mercedes, the 350e can charge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes using a DC fast charger at a rate of 60 kW. With a standard household level-2 plug, the GLC can charge from 10% to full in under three hours. Refined driving experience The overall driving experience was pleasant and civilized. The steering was precise and well-weighted, and the front coil suspension and rear air suspension combined to deliver a soft and smooth ride. With the ICE and electric drive systems operating in harmony, the 350e felt smooth and effortlessly powerful. While I did detect some hesitation when switching between various EV, hybrid, and ICE driving modes, the hybrid system was fairly seamless in operation. Despite its 313 horsepower and 406 lb ft. of torque, the PHEV GLC wasn't any quicker than the standard GLC 300, which has 255 horsepower under its hood. That's because the GLC hybrid carries an additional 1,000 lbs of heft. Stylish cabin The GLC shares much of its cabin design with the current C-Class sedan and the new CLE Coupe and Cabriolet. That's a good thing because it looks terrific. The interior blends modern tech and design like the metal weave center console, massive LED displays, and LED ambient lighting with callbacks to classic Mercedes-Benz design with the vintage turbine design air vents and fine wood trim. The only real complaint I have, and one that I have with most modern Mercedes cabins, is the touch controls, which look great but can be fussy and imprecise to use while driving. Comfortable seats The GLC's 16-way power front seats, which are heated and ventilated, were very comfortable. The sienna brown and black seats were upholstered in a material called MB-Tex, which does a fair approximation of real leather. Stylish Digital Cockpit In front of the driver is a stylish, leather-wrapped, heated AMG flat-bottom steering wheel. The 12.3-inch configurable instrument display can be tailored to the needs of the driver with different designs focused on assistance features, the navigation system, and even off-road driving. Excellent infotainment tech The focal point of the GLC's center stack is a large 11.9-inch infotainment touchscreen. The screen is equipped with the third-generation Mercedes-Benz User Experience infotainment system, which is pretty well sorted at this point. It's responsive and easy to navigate, and the graphics look terrific. The system's overeager voice assistance is also far less intrusive than in past iterations. The system's built-in navigation maps look spectacular, and the image quality of the GLC's surround-view cameras is equally impressive. My test car came with the Guard 360 system, which uses the GLC's surround-view camera system to actively monitor the SUV and take time-stamped images of events such as collision damage when parked. Burmester stereo The optional 710-watt, 15-speaker Burmester 3D audio system sounds crisp and powerful. The system's metallic speaker covers also look fantastic. Off-road mode Among the 350e's various drive modes is an off-road mode that allows the PHEV to tackle rough terrain using only its electric drivetrain. The GLC can also be had with a "transparent hood" feature that allows the driver to see through the hood at what's under and immediately in front of the vehicle when driving off-road. Panoramic glass roof The Mercedes Panorama roof, a $1,500 option, floods the cabin with natural light with minimal effect on headroom. Safety tech The GLC comes standard with a host of safety tech, including adaptive high beam assist, blind spot assist, and active parking assist. However, you'll need to pay for the $1,950 Driver Assistance Package to get Mercedes' outstanding Distronic adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and other high-tech features. 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC PHEV review: the best plug-in SUV yet?
The Mercedes-Benz GLC has resonated with buyers since its debut in 2015, quickly becoming one of the brand's most sought-after models. By 2018, it was outselling most of the Mercedes lineup, and by 2020, it surpassed even the C-Class to become the brand's global best-seller. More people chose the GLC over the C-Class, an undeniable shift in preference toward luxury SUVs. The second-generation model, introduced in 2022, carried that momentum forward, further cementing the GLC's place at the top. In the U.S. alone, over 65,000 were sold that year, proving that American buyers have a strong affinity for a well-executed Mercedes crossover. View the 25 images of this gallery on the original article With a proven formula on its hands, Mercedes-Benz set out to refine it. Enter the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350 PHEV — a more efficient evolution of its best-seller. With an electric-only range of up to 54 miles, many daily drives can be handled in near silence without using a drop of fuel. For those not ready to go fully electric, it's a smart balance, efficient in the city, capable on the highway, and still every bit the luxury SUV buyers expect from Mercedes-Benz. All GLC 300s are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo that's enough for 204 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. However, being a plug-in hybrid, the 350e supplements power from a 136-hp 100 kW electric motor, raising the total power output to 313 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, a 9-speed auto ensures power's fed to all four wheels via Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel-drive, now standard across the lineup. For the stopwatch crowd, this translates to 0 to 60 mph in around 6.3 seconds. But the GLC 350e is far more than that. Mercedes claims an all-electric range of up to 54 miles, one of the best figures in its class — ensuring most commutes can be handled on electric power alone. When it's feeding time, DC fast-charging capabilities of up to 60 kW allow for a quick top-up from 10 - 80% in roughly 30 minutes. Luxury is a given with Mercedes, and the GLC 350e takes that to heart. It's all about that AIRMATIC air suspension, which gives this SUV a ride that's more akin to floating down the road than driving on asphalt. Bumps and potholes? Barely a ripple. Now, if you want real corner-carving magic, you'll have to step up to the AMG versions with their available four-wheel steering, something you won't find on a BMW X3, by the GLC 350e manages to be a confident companion on the road. The instant torque from the electric motor means there is a lot of low-end grunt, and the combination of the battery and combustion engine work together seamlessly. The result is a driving experience that is refined, quiet, responsive, and genuinely stellar. Step inside the GLC 350e, and you're immediately greeted by that signature Mercedes blend of high-tech wizardry and old-school luxury. It's a cabin that clearly aims to impress, and for the most part, it succeeds. Material quality is top-notch, as you'd expect in this price bracket. We're talking premium everything, from the soft-touch surfaces to the (optional) supple Nappa leather that's a definite step up from the standard MB-Tex. Dominating the dashboard is Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system, a digital duo consisting of a 12.3-inch driver's display and an 11.9-inch portrait-style touchscreen. It's crisp, it's colorful, and it's packed with features, including that augmented-reality navigation that overlays directions onto a live camera feed of the road ahead. And, of course, you've got the "Hey Mercedes" voice assistant, which is always ready to (hopefully) do your bidding. The touch controls can be a bit fiddly, and some might find the sheer number of menus and options overwhelming. Less is sometimes more. Beyond the screens, the GLC 350e delivers on the comfort front. The front seats, especially when optioned with ventilation and massage functions, are a lovely place to spend time. Rear passengers aren't forgotten, either, with available multi-zone climate control and reclining seats. And if you really want to go all-out, you can add options like 64-color ambient lighting, a thumping Burmester surround sound system, and a panoramic sunroof that bathes the cabin in natural light. Wireless smartphone integration via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto is, thankfully, standard. So is a suite of driver-assistance features, including active lane keeping and adaptive cruise, to make those highway miles melt future of transportation is undoubtedly electrified, and the 2025 Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e makes a compelling case for plug-in hybrid crossovers. With an impressive all-electric range of 54 miles and a refined hybrid powertrain delivering substantial power figures, it finds the sweet spot between performance and practicality. Whether you're looking for cutting-edge tech, luxury appointments, or a practical transition into electrification, the GLC 350e offers an enticing glimpse into Mercedes-Benz's electrified future.
