Best rhode skincare and makeup dupes you can shop in Australia

Calling all beauty lovers, some major huge news has just dropped. It was announced earlier today that Hailey Bieber's brand, rhode skin, has been acquired by e.l.f, the global cosmetics brand known for its effective formulas and affordable price tags. The sale has reportedly made the 28-year-old founder a billionaire, as the acquisition tipped into the 10-figure range, and this could mean great things for Aussie shoppers. While rhode products still aren't readily shipped to Australia, the acquirement from e.l.f cosmetic s could mean that we're able to get our hands on the glow-inducing range a lot sooner than expected. 'When I launched @rhode in 2022, I always had big dreams for the company, and the most important thing to me is to keep bringing rhode to more spaces, places, and faces globally,' Bieber said of the partnership. 'I found a like-minded disruptor with a vision to be a different kind of company that believes in big ideas and innovation in the same way that I do and will help us continue to grow the brand.' But while we continue to wait patiently for the sought-after skincare and makeup to arrive on Aussie shores, there are plenty of homegrown products that give a similar rhode result. We've rounded up 5 of the Best Picks for recreating a rhode-worthy glow below. 1. Ole Henriksen Pout Preserve Peptide Lip Treatment, was $29 now $23.20 at Adore Beauty Argubly rhode's most popular product (you can spot the matching phone cases almost everywhere), the peptide lip balm is loved by the masses thanks to its ability to hydrate and plump at the same time. Luckily we've found an alternative; Ole Henrikesen's Pout Preserve Peptide Li p Treatment, which is jam-packed with peptides and kokum butter to keep lips silky soft for hours. 2. Merit Beauty Flush Balm, $48 at Merit Beauty Every wondered how Beiber achieves her flawless complexion and perfectly flushed cheeks? Great genes yes, but her Pocket Blush plays a big part too. Merit Beauty's Flush Balm is a cream formula that delivers a similar sun-kissed effect, simply swipe over your cheekbones and apples of the cheeks for a 'just came back from holiday' kind of look. 3. TBH Skincare rebound skin milk activated cica toner, was $29.99 now $22.46 at Adore Beauty Now that the colder weather is well and truly upon us, upping our hydration is more important than ever. Beiber swears by the rhode Glazing Milk as 'soak for the skin' which is key to achieving a dewy, fresh face. tbh Skincare's rebound skin milk is nourishing formula containing D-Panthenol to calm skin and is designed to be used twice a day after cleansing for a visibly smooth complexion. 4. Go-To Juicy Gel, $39 at Go-To Skincare Love a squeaky clean feeling at the end of the day? So does Beiber. She created the Pineapple Cleanser to gently wipe away the day, removing dirt and impurities without stripping the skin. Fear not, Go-To Juicy Gel does a similar thing with its soap-free and jelly-like formula. Containing cucumber and aloe vera, it's so gentle and soothing, great for those with sensitive skin. 5. Paula's Choice Resist Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturizer, $60 at Sephora Everyone needs an ultra-nourishing barrier cream in their skincare lineup. If it can't be rhode's barrier restore cream (it's a crowd-favourite with over 3,000 reviews), then we suggest adding Paula's Choice Barrier Repair Advanced Moisturiser to your cart. Designed to protect and strengthen the skin's delicate barrier, all it needs is 30 minutes to lock in all-day hydration. Simply lather onto skin day and night to reap all the benefits. Shop e.l.f at Amazon Australia: e.l.f Power Grip Primer, $19.20 e.l.f Monochromatic Multi Stick, $17.15 e.l.f Holy Hydration! Makeup Melting Cleansing Balm, $27.40 e.l.f Enhancing Lash & Brow Serum, $21.76 e.l.f Power Grip Primer, $19.59

Sali Hughes on beauty: tinted SPFs are a game-changer – but proceed with caution

Sunscreens have caught some colour, acquiring a little makeup coverage in the form of tinted SPFs. Until now, these have been relatively few and far between. Australian sunscreen specialists Ultra Violette changed the game with the launch of the excellent Daydream Screen SPF50 (£38) a few summers ago. Now, a new batch is launching. The Guardian's journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more. Supergoop! is the first cab off the rank with Protec(tint) Daily Tint SPF50 (£40). The best thing about this very sheer tint is the shade lineup, which is well considered and natural-looking across the board (24N is a perfect match for me). However, skin type matters. It will best suit someone with balanced or slightly dry skin, since the finish will look too moist for oilier types, and cling to any flakiness on very dry skin. Sensitive skins and eyes generally fare best with mineral sunscreens, and Merit Beauty has them covered. The Uniform SPF50 (pictured, £33) comes in a generous 50ml helping and although coverage is still very sheer, it does blend beautifully and realistically. Again, shades are thoughtfully chosen (I'm 26) and all leave a very pretty eggshell sheen that sits at the halfway point between matte and glowy. If your skin is relatively clear and even, it's ideal. But if you'd like a mineral sunscreen with more redness coverage, try Ilia's terrific Super Serum Skin Tint SPF30 (£42), which behaves more like a foundation and has a huge shade lineup for all. Beauty of Joseon's Daily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen SPF30 (£17) went viral upon launch and if you're balanced to combination in type and would like a well-priced sunscreen that imparts a sheer, slightly shiny glow, then it's well worth a go. But dry skins shouldn't attempt this without plenty of moisturising skincare beneath, which brings me to the rub of the matter. While tinted sunscreens are of the same standard as regular SPF products, their effectiveness is identically dependent on applying enough: two longest finger lengths of sunscreen is adequate for face and neck. And so in order to be properly protected, one would have to apply so much tinted sunscreen as to appear caked in makeup (imagine applying that much foundation and you'll get the idea – you'd look like a TikTok influencer). It's for this reason that I would always suggest applying a tinted product over a regular untinted sunscreen, in a belt and braces approach.

Merit's Tinted Sunscreen Is So Good, It's Replacing Our Usual Makeup

A good one should offer lightweight coverage and a natural finish that subtly enhances your skin, without sitting heavy or erasing your features. Add reliable SPF protection (which can complicate the texture of the formulation) to the list of requirements, and the search gets even more challenging. So when Merit Beauty unveiled The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45, $38, a tinted mineral sunscreen that offers both sheer and buildable coverage, not to mention broad spectrum UV protection, we were quick to take notice. This new launch is a labor of love from the brand by all accounts. It took two years of development and more than 50 formulation attempts to get the consistency and finish just right. The sun protection comes from zinc oxide, a mineral filter that shields against UV rays by scattering and reflecting them away from the skin's surface. Also featured in the ingredient lists are moisturizing plant-derived emollients (in place of heavy silicones) and ultra-fine natural powders for a weightless and even application. We got our hands on this highly anticipated launch and have been wearing it as our go-to SPF over the past month. Read ahead for our honest thoughts on why it deserves a top spot in your summer beauty routine. Jacqueline Kilikita, beauty director She tried: Merit The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45, $38, in shade 24 'I don't say this lightly: this is hands down the best tinted sunscreen I've ever tried. It's replaced my foundation — and even my concealer. The texture is like a lightweight lotion, and whether I use my fingers or a brush, it melts into my skin easily, offering medium coverage that blurs dark circles and the marks left behind by breakouts. The finish sits in a cozy space between dewy and matte, so I don't need to powder over the top, and the staying power is excellent. I can go a full day at work — in office air, no less — and come home to more or less immaculate coverage. 'On my hand, shade 24 skews a little pink, so I was apprehensive it wouldn't suit my green undertones. But once on my face, it blends seamlessly into my light olive complexion, giving it a more uniform appearance without erasing my features. If I wanted to wear this on its own without blush or bronzer, I absolutely could, and it wouldn't look like I was wearing a mask. One thing to note: it's important to use a dedicated sunscreen first. Yes, this contains SPF 50, but it's well known that we rarely apply enough SPF makeup (a teaspoon or two finger-lengths for face and neck) to properly protect ourselves from UV damage. So I layer it over my trusty sunscreen — it's like insurance for my skin.' Venus Wong, senior writer Photo: Courtesy of Venus Wong. 'To me, the hallmark of a truly great sunscreen will always be whether I'm willing to wear it on an unbearably hot day. Anything that feels too heavy and icky breaks me out and will promptly get the boot. I took The Uniform out for a whirl on my recent travels around Asia, where temperatures hovered around 90°F with super high humidity, and I'm happy to report that it passed with flying colors. Out of all the sunscreens I've tried, this one has one of the most imperceptible textures. The carefully calibrated formula has definitely made a difference here; it feels very light and powdery and spreads evenly across the skin. There were days I almost forgot I'd put this on, if not for the flattering glow it imparts. For me, shade 22 provides the ideal level of coverage: just enough to neutralize redness and blur blemishes while maintaining a genuine skin finish. When it gets really hot this summer, I feel comfortable ditching all my other makeup and just wearing a layer of this tint, with my trusty Dr. Jart+ SPF stick as the final touch.' L'Oréal Blackett, Editor, Unbothered She tried: Merit The Uniform Tinted Mineral Sunscreen SPF 45, $38, in shades 10 and 12 Photo: Courtesy of L'Oréal Blacket. 'I'm not the easiest to please when it comes to skin tints with sunscreen. With a medium-deep skin tone and a golden to neutral undertone, some skin tints tend to leave me with a grey-ish, dull finish — a familiar story for anyone with brown skin. This is not the case with Merit's tinted sunscreen. This formula blends with my skin beautifully, slightly evening out my skin tone and leaving a fresh glow. It's barely perceptible and doesn't look like I'm wearing any makeup, but that's the point. It is very lightweight and perfect for everyday wear — I've even been wearing it to the gym. However, I still need to go in with a concealer as it doesn't blur my dark undereyes and blemishes. Vanese Maddix, contributing beauty writer Photo: Courtesy of Vanese Maddix. 'The Uniform has quickly become a staple in my routine. The formula is lightweight and blends effortlessly into the skin. As someone who prefers her skin tints and foundations to sit on the lighter side, this ticks all my boxes. While I typically dislike when brands describe their shade ranges as 'flexible', I was pleasantly surprised to find I could actually switch between shades 6, 8, and 10, depending on the look I wanted. I also appreciate that the deeper shades are numbered first (a thoughtful detail that didn't go unnoticed, and one I wish more brands would adopt). 'My only critique is the packaging: The tube has a gray-ish tint, which makes it harder to see the true shade without swatching. The cap also falls off quite easily. It's worth noting that the brand has created a shade range that corresponds with The Minimalist, its bestselling complexion stick, so finding your perfect match is a lot easier when you happen to own the latter. This product has shot straight to the top of my makeup bag thanks to its lovely finish and genuine lightweight feel. I wouldn't rely on it alone to meet my recommended SPF protection, but it has become my go-to for layering over a trusted sunscreen.' Tanyel Mustafa, senior writer Photo: Courtesy of Tanyel Mustafa. 'Let's start with the positives. This is a lovely formula. The tint gives just the right amount of coverage, and it dries down on skin while still appearing hydrated and fresh. I love how easy it is to apply with fingers. Where this product falls down for me, though, is in the very pink-leaning shade range. As a yellow-olive girlie, I found all of the shades I could make work too pink. Even the shade that corresponds to the Merit foundation stick I have (which I've used for years) is more pink. With this new product being a tint, the off-undertone shade isn't a dealbreaker. Once it's blended out with the rest of my makeup, it looks fine. But I wish I could apply this more confidently and without other makeup to offset the wrong undertone. Merit team, if you're reading this: The yellow-olive girlies would love a shade expansion!'

These Are The Merit Beauty Products Actually Worth Buying

The abundance of startup beauty brands can prompt eye rolls among even the most diehard makeup and skincare devotees. The market has been flooded with seemingly near-identical emerging brands, making it hard to know what's worth the investment and which are just really good at social media marketing. I've long been skeptical of many of these newcomers, and admit to even feeling overwhelmed by the range of choices that are available. I am, however, always looking for simple makeup solutions that help to keep my routine pared down without sacrificing on quality. So when I first heard about Merit Beauty, my interest was instantly piqued. I was further intrigued when I found out that the brand is helmed by Katherine Power, who previously founded the skin care line Versed, the wine startup Avaline and Who What Wear, a fashion and lifestyle website and clothing brand. She's highly regarded as a person with trustworthy judgment in the style and beauty realm and has impeccable taste. She consistently works with people who are at the top of their field, like celeb esthetician Biba de Sousa, further bolstering the brand's credibility. Merit is branded as a minimalist's beauty line, providing shoppers with everything they need and nothing they don't. It started out with only 10 products in its lineup — presumably everything you need for a gorgeous, glowing face in just five minutes — but has now expanded to include more skin care and makeup offerings. After trying out pretty much all of Merit's products, I can officially say that I'm hooked. I use them daily and love how quickly and easily they give my skin a natural, flawless glow. The line gives you an effortlessly put-together appearance without feeling caked on, overly formal or greasy. Best of all, the reasonable price point makes it easy to stock up on my favorites, like the lip tint or cheek balm. All of the products are formulated to be skin-forward, and are full of plant-based ingredients like antioxidants, squalane and vitamin B5. I was especially excited to try them out because they've also been designed to be safe for acne-prone, sensitive and reactive skin like mine. So not only are you getting lovely coverage from the makeup itself, but you're nourishing the overall health of your skin as well. All of their products are vegan, cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny-certified as well as EU compliant and designated Clean at Sephora. Merit says it is also committed to eliminating as much virgin plastic as possible from its lineup of products and uses shipment packaging that is recyclable, reusable or biodegradable. As a sweet touch, every first order ships with a chic corduroy makeup bag. I love to use mine as a handbag, and my partner is constantly swiping it for herself. Below, I've rounded out my eight must-have products from Merit's lineup. Buy them individually or save by bundling Merit's bestselling products and getting everything you need in one go. You'll be surprised at how much easier and quicker they'll make your morning routine. 1. Merit Beauty Solo Shadow Merit When I first saw that Merit had debuted a new line of eyeshadows, I could not have been more excited — first by the gorgeous color options and then by the texture and finish. You can get them in eight colors, four of which are classic neutrals and four of which are fun statement hues. They have a unique cream-to-powder formula that glides on easily and blends beautifully but then dries down to a soft, powdery matte finish. I currently have three in my rotation and would happily add more. 2. Merit Beauty Great Skin Duo Get that post-facial glow every day with this skin-loving duo from Merit. The Great Skin Duo includes a serum and a moisturizer that work in tandem to quench even the thirstiest skin, leaving it glowing, supple and smooth. The serum has a super-light formulation that won't pill under makeup and keeps skin looking fresh and hydrated all day long, while the moisturizer can help support skin's moisture barrier, elasticity and tone. It's an easy way for her to pamper yourself daily, and who doesn't want that? 3. Merit Beauty Retrospect L'Extrait de Parfum Merit Beauty If you're in the market for a new fragrance this spring and summer, then Merit has you covered. Its new perfume is as elegant and fresh as you would imagine from such a sophisticated brand. It features a lush, soft and clean scent with floral, musk, vanilla and moss notes that will leave you smelling like yourself but better. Instead of overpowering, it'll complement your skin and evolve as the day goes on. 4. Merit Beauty Merit's foundation stick is, in my opinion, the crown jewel of the collection. It glides on effortlessly, has a creamy consistency and gives you just the right amount of buildable coverage. It's incredibly versatile, too. Some days I use it just as an under-eye concealer or to spot correct around my nose or to hide pimples, and when I want fuller coverage I use it as an all-over foundation. It leaves skin looking glowy, but not oily, has a dewy finish and, unlike many hydrating foundations, it actually lasts all day long. It's available in 30 different shades, is safe for acne-prone skin like mine, conditions and moisturizes the skin and can even be used as a contour — just go three shades darker than your usual hue if that's how you plan to use it. 5. Merit Beauty After years of using Glossier's brow pomade, I've switched allegiances for good. Merit's brow pomade comes in four hues that add color and structure to even the wimpiest of brows (like mine). They make brows fluffy and full, but never stiff or dry. The tube lasts longer than most other brow pomades I've tried and gives brows a very natural, yet robust, appearance. I never walk out the door without swiping it on first. 6. Merit Beauty Flush Balm Merit Beauty I'm a big blush person, so my standards are very high in general, but particularly for tint or balm-type formulas. I have extremely acne-prone skin, so creamy formulas can be quite dicey. But I'm pleased to report that Merit's blush balm is a great option for anyone looking for that natural, lit-from-within glowy vibe that won't clog pores. It is buildable, so you can keep it sheer or layer it on depending on your whim, and it hydrates and conditions the skin and looks good doing it. It has a lovely texture that isn't sticky or smudgy and lasts all day long. It's easy to blend with fingers or a brush and is available in 12 sweet shades. I use it nearly daily. 7. Merit Beauty Shade Slick tinted lip oil Merit Beauty Available in 11 different sheer shades, this tinted lip oil is perfect for anyone who wants a lighter texture than a traditional lipstick. It gives you the same high-shine finish as a gloss but never feels sticky. It adds a hint of color to enhance your overall complexion, is buildable if you want a bit more drama and feels lightweight. It's made with hydrating ingredients that nourish and strengthen the moisture barrier of your lips, so it's good for you too. I love the Sangria and Pink Beet shades, but my partner lives in the Cara Cara and Au Naturel hues. It's almost impossible to pick just one. 8. Merit Beauty Clean Lash lengthening mascara Merit Beauty If you love a natural lash, this is about to become your go-to mascara. Despite a lifetime of being obsessed with thick — dare we say clumpy — mascaras, I'm absolutely besotted with Merit's lovely version. It's the ideal everyday lash-enhancer: clean, natural and slick. It looks like your own lashes, but infinitely better. The brush gives a really nice fluttery, feathery effect and the formula itself gives lashes a really shiny, wet look that won't smudge or look dried out even as the day wears on. Best of all, it's easy to remove at the end of the day, so you don't have to worry about going to town on your lashes when cleansing your face. Price: $26
