Wind gust lifts bounce house at Mesquite elementary school, injuring students
A group of students at a Mesquite elementary school sustained injuries Friday after a sudden gust of wind hoisted a bounce house during a school play day event. School officials reported that the injured students from Lawrence Elementary School were transported to a hospital for medical evaluation. None of those students sustained life-threatening injuries, according to Mesquite ISD. The district contacted the affected families. "All other students are safe and continuing the school day indoors," said Sabreana Smith, a spokesperson for Mesquite ISD. "Out of care and caution, the remainder of today's outdoor Play Day activities have been canceled." Counselors were called to campus and made available for students or staff in need of support following the incident, Smith said. An investigation is underway, the district said. "We are committed to reviewing every aspect of the event to ensure it never happens again," Smith said. "Nothing matters more than protecting the children entrusted to our care." CBS News Texas will provide updates as more information becomes available.

Mesquite ISD's $600 million bond election
The Brief Early voting is now underway for Mesquite ISD's $600 million bond referendum. Registered voters can cast their ballots now through April 29, during early voting, or on Election Day, May 3. The bond proposal will appear on the ballot as two separate propositions for various projects, including safety and security improvements, safety and security, growth in the southern section of the district, and renovations and updates to aging facilities and equipment. MESQUITE, Texas - Early voting is now underway for Mesquite ISD's $600 million bond referendum. Registered voters can cast their ballots now through April 29, during early voting, or on Election Day, May 3. The bond appears as two propositions: Proposition A includes the following: Security technology enhancements on every campus New buses: Mesquite ISD has more than 180 buses, and 97 of those have been in service since 2013 or later. The district's bus replacement cycle includes 15-20 new buses per year with an average cost of $1.9-$2.7 million. Roof Replacements: The district has more than 7 million square feet of roof surface. Because roofs have an average life expectancy between 18 and 22 years, the district invests in a roof replacement cycle of three to five buildings yearly at an average cost of $5 to $7 million. Consolidate the two oldest elementary schools, Motley and Lawrence, into a brand-new campus. Consolidating the two campuses would "significantly reduce operational and maintenance costs," the district says. Both campuses were built in the 1960s. Motley has not been renovated in 24 years, and Lawrence Elementary's last renovation was 30 years ago. The campuses are located near each other and are currently operating below capacity, according to the district. The combined enrollment of both schools is just over 500 students. Build a Pre-K center in the Horn feeder pattern to accommodate growth Significant maintenance, renovation, and expansion projects at multiple campuses Other projects include adding storm shelters and secure entry points, fencing elementary playgrounds, and replacing aging equipment such as fire systems, industrial kitchen appliances, chillers, boilers, and electrical systems. Proposition B will provide for technology replacements district-wide. According to the district, there are approximately 3,500 classroom televisions across the district, and they are, on average, 8–10 years old. Prop B would provide 21.5 million to replace classroom technology and student and staff instructional devices. Why you should care If voters approve both propositions on the ballot, the estimated tax impact will be .01 per $100 of home valuation. Mesquite ISD Shows Positive Literacy Growth Despite National Average
Mesquite ISD is making steady gains in literacy, surpassing pre-pandemic scores through structured instruction, teacher training, and early childhood programs. MESQUITE, TX, UNITED STATES, February 4, 2025 / / -- Recent reports from the U.S. Department of Education's National Assessment of Educational Progress reveal that most students nationwide have yet to recover from pandemic-related learning loss in literacy. While this remains a challenge across the country, Mesquite ISD is seeing steady gains in literacy achievement. Mesquite ISD's fourth-grade students have surpassed their 2019 scores, signaling a promising recovery. Eighth-grade reading scores are also showing progress, now just one point away from pre-pandemic levels. Over the past years, the way reading is taught has fundamentally shifted from balanced literacy to structured literacy—a philosophical change that emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, fluency, and comprehension. This shift has led many school districts across the nation, including Mesquite ISD, to adopt new instructional materials, retrain teachers, and reassess how student reading abilities are measured. At Mesquite ISD, every kindergarten through fourth-grade reading language arts teacher has completed or is actively working toward completing the Texas Reading Academy, a state-mandated program designed to strengthen early literacy instruction. This initiative provides educators with research-based strategies and best practices to enhance young learners' reading skills, ensuring they receive high-quality, evidence-backed instruction. Mesquite ISD's Focus on Early Childhood Literacy Initiatives Mesquite ISD recognizes that literacy development begins long before students enter pre-K and has implemented early childhood programs to support families in fostering strong language and literacy skills from birth. LENA Start is a 10-week program for babies up to three years old, helping parents track and support their child's language development. By equipping families with the right tools and knowledge, the program ensures that children have a strong foundation for literacy when they enter school. In addition, the district hosts Read Play Talk monthly storytime sessions in every elementary school library through its Little Readers Book Club, where families can engage in shared reading experiences, learn strategies for supporting literacy at home, and take home a free book. To further increase accessibility, the Read Play Talk Bus brings books and resources directly to families. This mobile literacy hub visits schools, parks, and community events, teaching parents to incorporate reading into their daily routines. Looking Ahead 'We are proud of the progress we've made, but we know the work doesn't stop here,' said Superintendent Dr. Ángel Rivera. 'We remain committed to implementing effective strategies, advancing literacy initiatives, and equipping our educators with the support they need to ensure every student has the tools to excel.' With a continued focus on literacy programs and teacher development, Mesquite ISD remains dedicated to empowering students with the literacy skills they need to thrive academically and beyond.
