Indian stock market: Sensex, Nifty 50 trade flat after rallying for four sessions. Is it time to book profits?
Stock market today: The benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened higher for the fifth consecutive session on Tuesday, driven by optimism surrounding US-China trade discussions and favorable domestic policy cues. However, the initial rally lost momentum quickly, and the market turned volatile. As of 9:32 am, the BSE Sensex had declined by 160 points, or 0.19%, to 82,284, while the Nifty50 slipped 5 points, or 0.02%, to 25,097. In sectoral performance, Nifty Bank and Financial Services dipped by 0.3% and 0.5%, respectively. On the other hand, sectors like Nifty Auto, IT, Media, Metal, and Oil & Gas recorded gains of up to 1.1%. In the broader market, the Nifty Midcap100 edged up by 0.2%, while the Smallcap100 advanced by 0.3%. ' Technically speaking, whether it's a pennant or a rectangle that the market is breaking out of, the implications are bullish with an objective of 25800. 25200 is important on the upside and as long as bears are unable to force the index below 24800, bulls clearly have the upper hand. Talks between China and the US are expected to conclude today so what happens there will be the next catalyst for the trend,' said Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities. According to VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, Nifty is likely to consolidate in the 24500 - 25500 range in the near-term. There are no short-term triggers to take the Nifty beyond the upper band. Some profit booking pulling the market slightly down is likely. But ample liquidity will ensure that dips will get bought, helping the market to consolidate. Vijayakumar further said, " From the global perspective, market participants will be keenly following the progress of trade talks between the U.S. and China. Even though there is optimism regarding a favourable outcome, it is unlikely to happen quickly. Since the market has run up in the last two trading days and valuations have got stretched, some profit booking can be considered to hedge against unexpected developments." On the other hand, Ajit Mishra – SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd believes that the participants should exercise caution amid market rally. ' We maintain our bullish outlook and recommend a focus on selective stock picking during any intermediate consolidation or dip. At the same time, participants should exercise caution, especially in the small- and mid-cap segments, which are currently buoyed by strong domestic flows and sentiment. Expect choppy sessions as monthly expiry nears
During the previous week, the equity indices consolidate in the range. The benchmark indices declined just 166.65 points or 0.67 per cent. The BSE Sensex is down by 0.74 per cent. The Midcap-100 was down by 0.65 per cent, and the Smallcap-100 gained by 0.47 per cent. On the sectoral front, the Nifty Realty index is the top gainer with 2.66 per cent, followed by Metal with 0.52 per cent. On the flipside, the Consumer Durables index is down by 2.16 per cent. and Auto is declined by 1.83 per cent. The IT declined by 1.50 per cent. The India VIX is up by 4.40 per cent to 17.28. The market breadth is mostly positive. The FIIs bought Rs.12,191.61 crore this month. The DIIs bought Rs.34,497.56 crore worth of equities. The benchmark index took a breather after a thousand-point rally in the previous week. It consolidated within the previous week's range and formed an inside bar. The Nifty took support at the 20 DMA and bounced. The trend strength is still stronger, as the index did not violate the prior week's low and key support levels. The counter-trend consolidations are common after an impulse move. After last Thursday's massive 395-point gain, the volumes are declining. Interestingly, the down days attracted more volume than the up days. It registered two distribution days. Currently, the Nifty holds six distribution days, which is on the higher side. With this number of distribution days, if the index trades below key supports or the 50 DMA, it would confirm a downtrend. But it is trading above all key short and long-term averages. The 20 and 50 DMAs are in the uptrend, which shows the trend is not in danger. If it declines below the previous week's low of 24462, it will give weaker signals. As the monthly expiry is approaching, expect a spike in volatility. For a strong bullish bias to emerge, the Nifty must move above 25116 and close decisively. Above this the 25307 is the nearest target. The Nifty may not breach the 24300-378 zone support but may trade with high volatility. In any case, the Nifty closes below this zone, the 50-week average will act as strong support. The RSI is in the neutral zone in all time frames. The Weekly MACD line is above the zero line. The market may enter into a time correction, as long as there is no leg of trending moves. The 25100-310 will be a Herculean task to be violated. As long as the Nifty trades between the 24300-25100 range, stay with a neutral bias. The sector and stock rotation will be in focus. Focus on the stronger relative strength and momentum stocks. All the profitable trades must be protected with strict stop losses and keep leveraged positions should be kept at modest levels. Stay cautiously optimistic next week. No matter what our religion, our belief, our faith, our worldview, or many other spiritual-related quandaries, we can all agree on one thing: Pope cards will never be worth anything. But man… they are cool. Advertisement Why do we collect? Is it to hoard cards for years in hopes they double in value, only to sell them and lose that entire accrued value through fees and shipping costs? Is it to gamble your hard-earned money away by watching someone rip open packs of cards on a webcam while making highly inappropriate comments ? Is there something greater? Could it be some people just collect… for fun? I can tell you I fall into the final camp. Fine, yes, I will buy Burger King advent calendars and SI For Kids issues in hopes of selling them for profit. But who doesn't? (Don't answer that, I know it's 'kids'). But at the end of the day, I buy cards because they're cool. ' Where Monsters Live '? THEY GLOW! Glenn Hubbard 1984 Fleer ( check it out on eBay )? THERE'S A SNAKE!! Pope Leo XIV Leaf Metal? PIZZA !! And it wasn't just Leaf… and it wasn't just pizza. Leaf Metal Hot Dog card – I like the idea, and I fact-checked to make sure there was no ketchup, but it felt more stock image than truly Chicago-ey Advertisement 2. Topps NOW Pope Leo XIV card – I think this will be the eventual classic 'official' version. It's fine, the photo looks great, and it has a good 'feel' to it. 1. Leaf Metal Pizza card – I will regret not buying more of these just to support the creativity of it all. A few more notes on 'Pope' cards: This guy has too much money or free time to send this many Pope cards to PSA (you may have to read the item description). There IS a Pope Francis 'rookie card' — it was given away at Citizens Bank Park when he visited the U.S. in 2015 ( Buy it on eBay ). That all being said, the Allen & Ginter 2013 card ( check it out on eBay ) is an inexpensive way to grab a Pope Francis card that has a great look and feel to it. More than 134K people purchased the Pope Leo XIV Topps NOW card, making it the best selling non-sports NOW card of all time. You know what was cool that time has kind of forgotten about? The Mickey Mantle x Topps boxes from 2021 ( check it out on eBay ). The cards had great designs, you had a shot at some pretty valuable stuff… and then it just kind of floated into Cards Ether. I often wonder why it never caught on. Were there too many Mantle reprints made over the years as inserts? And so $10 then (and $30-$40 now) for a five-card pack that might ultimately result in five shiny reprints is a bit of a money vacuum ? Maybe the chase cards weren't sexy enough… maybe it just came out at the wrong time? This was peak NFT annoyance on the timeline. Advertisement I bought five boxes at the time. I can't remember if it was that typical 'frenzied chase at exactly noon' or if they were on the site for a few days and you could just pop in and buy at your pleasure. And while the opening experience was fun, I was very much 'okay now what?' with a stack of 50 reprints. I'm sure they're in a tub somewhere, but when I open and flip through they won't have that same 'ah yes remember when' nostalgia of my Pope pizza card. I try to include as much fast food news as possible here, as Mantel 's CEO Evan (who now bylines himself on the Thursday newsletter that he prefers over this one) enjoys it, but… nothing shaking this week, unfortunately. McDonald's is in its refractory period after the Minecraft run — but they kick off Stitch next week! Random thought of the week: I am glad pins do nothing for me. I never got into them but I can see how one can drop a lot of money on some cool ones. By the way, on the whole Mickey Mantle topic, there was a great story in The Athletic about the infamous 'vulgar letter' and its current owner: McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown.
