Weather update: AP, Telangana to witness strange weather with rain and heatwaves

The Telugu states are experiencing unusual weather patterns, with contrasting conditions of sunshine and rain. According to the Meteorological Centre, a weakened trough extending from south-central Maharashtra to north-interior Karnataka, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh has led to the prevailing weather. This has resulted in westerly and northwesterly winds affecting Telangana. Today, residents across multiple districts in Telangana have been advised to prepare for light rain accompanied by gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h. Districts such as Adilabad, Komarambhim, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Rajanna Sircilla, Jayashankar Bhupalpalli, Mulugu, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagar Kurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Jogulamba, and Gadwal will be affected. Moreover, a slight increase in temperatures is expected over the next two days, with maximum temperatures in Khammam potentially reaching 41 degrees and a minimum of 36 degrees in Mahabubnagar. In Andhra Pradesh, the Amaravati Meteorological Department has forecasted light to moderate rains across various districts over the next couple of days. The influence of a weather system dubbed 'Droni' is anticipated to bring rain to areas including Alluri Seetharamaraju, Kakinada, Prakasam, Palnadu, Anantapur, and Sri Satyasai on Sunday. Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds, gusting at speeds of 40 to 50 km/h, are expected across the remaining districts, contributing to hot and humid conditions. Amidst this tumultuous weather, maximum temperatures are likely to soar to 40-41 degrees. On Saturday, temperatures in the region peaked, with Kavali recording 41.1 degrees and Gannavaram at 41 degrees. Nellore reported 40.8 degrees, Bapatla 40.5 degrees, and Ongole 40.3 degrees. Rainfall data indicates that Kurnool received 11 mm, Tirupati 3 mm, Ongole 3 mm, Vijayawada and Tuni 2 mm each, and Kakinada 1 mm. Residents are urged to stay alert to changing weather conditions.

Several parts of AP to receive rains for four days amid depression in Bay of Bengal

Rains have been sweeping across the Telugu states as a depression in the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, making landfall between Bangladesh and West Bengal. The Meteorological Department has indicated that the storm is expected to weaken within the next 12 hours. As a result, thundershowers and lightning have been reported in various locations across coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Authorities have advised fishermen in coastal areas to refrain from fishing due to rough sea conditions. The Disaster Management Agency has announced that rain is anticipated across 20 districts in Andhra Pradesh due to the depression and the ongoing southwest monsoon. Conditions are particularly favourable for light to moderate rains in Nandyal, YSR Kadapa, and Tirupati districts in Rayalaseema, with light showers expected in the remaining districts. In Telangana, the Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert valid until June 2, predicting rain for the next four days. The southwest monsoon has established itself across the region, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of Kothagudem on Thursday, as well as significant rainfall in Mahabubabad, Siricilla, Adilabad, Jagtial, Jangaon, Kamareddy, Khammam, Nirmal, and Nizamabad districts. Flooding occurred on major roads in Hyderabad following evening rainfall. Traditionally, the last week of May corresponds to the Rohini Karthi period, which is marked by abundant sunshine. However, the early arrival of the southwest monsoon has resulted in heavy downpours across the Telugu states during this time.

Pre-monsoon showers lash Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Pre-monsoon showers brought relief from the scorching heat in most parts of Odisha on Saturday, according to the IMD. Heavy rain, along with thunderstorms, is likely across the State till May 30, and there will be no large change in temperature, it said. 'Almost all the districts experienced cloudy weather, with light to moderate rain at many places and heavy downpour in some areas,' said Manorama Mohanty, the Director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar. 'Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail till May 30 in the wake of a cyclonic circulation that lies over north coastal Odisha,' she said. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, Koraput received 45 mm rainfall, followed by Bhubaneswar (37 mm), Angul (36 mm), Khurda (22 mm) Cuttack (18.4 mm) and Talcher (12.4 mm). IMD scientist Umashankar Das said Odisha was receiving pre-monsoon rains after the southwest monsoon reached Kerala. 'The cloud systems responsible for the current rainfall are not moving in from the west or northwest, which is characteristic of Kalbaisakhi storms. Instead, these systems are advancing inland from the sea, a typical pre-monsoon pattern,' he said. The IMD advised people to take safe shelter during thunderstorm to protect themselves from lightning. The Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) said the possibility of the formation of a low pressure area over the north-west Bay of Bengal may lead to the early onset of south-west monsoon over Odisha. The CEC Director, S C Sahu, said overcast conditions with light rain and thunderstorms were expected to occur over the State and rainfall was likely to increase from May 27 afternoon under the influence of the low pressure area. 'The rains may continue till May 30 night but heavy precipitation may occur on May 28 and 29 in the coastal belt of Odisha and a few other districts,' Sahu said. The intensity of rainfall may be too high in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri and Khurda districts, he said. These rain-bearing systems may signal the onset of monsoon over Odisha on May 28 or 29, about two weeks before the normal date of arrival of the rains in the State, Sahu said. 'The rains occurring now may be termed as pre-monsoon rain with decreasing day temperature and increase in humidity,' he said.
