Raising Cane's opening Ann Arbor location this summer

Months after opening its first Metro Detroit location, Raising Cane's is opening another store in the Southeast region, this time in Ann Arbor. The company says the location at 1116 S. University Ave. Unit B will open this summer, but the official date has not been announced. The restaurant opened a new location on Ford Road in Canton back in February. The only other Michigan location is in East Lansing. On Feb. 4, hundreds gathered outside the Canton location for its official opening. People waited there for hours before the 10 a.m. opening, some with lawn chairs and many of them in winter coats, given the weather. The company announced a promotion to celebrate the opening, with swag gifts for the first ones in line and a drawing for a card that provided a free combo meal three times a month. Due to the influx of people, Canton police directed traffic and alerted residents of heavy traffic that day. Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers started in 1996 in Louisiana. In 2024, the company opened a total of 118 restaurants. NOTE: The video above previously aired on Feb. 4, 2025.

Two women charged in alleged human trafficking ring at Metro Detroit massage parlors

Two women are facing human trafficking related charges after an investigation of sexual services provided at Metro Detroit massage parlors. Runping "Lisa" Huang, 61, is charged with human trafficking enterprise-forced labor, human trafficking enterprise-commercial sexual activity, prostitution-accepting earnings, and transporting person for the purpose of prostitution. Chunxiu "Eva" Xu, 47, is charged with human trafficking enterprise-forced labor and transporting person for the purpose of prostitution. Their arraignment hearings both took place on May 31 in the 46th District Court. Huang is being held in the Oakland County Jail on a $50,000 cash or surety bond. Xu is being held in the Oakland County Jail on a $150,000 cash or surety bond. The sixth-month investigation by the South Oakland Narcotics Intelligence Consortium (SONIC) began with a confidential tip and wrapped up May 28. Police from Novi, West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills and Shelby Township assisted with the apprehension of what was said at the time to be three people. The prosecutor related in her press release that the SONIC Task Force checked on the circumstances at several massage parlors during the investigation. "Victims reported they were ordered to provide sexual services and made to work 12-hour days, seven days a week. Victims did not speak English, had no access to transportation, and allegedly were made to turn over earnings," the report said. As a result of the investigation, detectives identified three people believed to be responsible for managing and profiting from the criminal enterprise and took them into custody. The circumstances of the third person who was said to be taken into custody have not been reported. This case is part of a long-range effort to coordinate investigations and hold suspects accountable for human trafficking activity, the prosecutor's office related. Oakland County has presented 27 such cases since last November on such charges. "For too long human trafficking festered in the shadows of our communities while victims were fearful of being treated like criminals," McDonald said in her statement. "Law enforcement is working together to attack this problem with an unprecedented urgency. We will keep fighting to hold traffickers accountable and free victims."

Michigan gas prices drop 13 cents since last week, AAA says

Michigan gas prices dropped by 13 cents since last week, according to AAA. Michiganders are paying an average of $3.08 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, which is 17 cents less than this time last month and 48 cents less than this time a year ago. A 15-gallon tank of gas costs motorists about $46, around $11 less than the highest price drivers paid in July 2024. In Metro Detroit, motorists are paying about $3.12 per gallon, which is 4 cents less than last week and 39 cents less than last year. "Michigan drivers are seeing lower prices at the pump, with some metro areas seeing averages below $3 a gallon," said AAA spokesperson Adrienne Woodland. "If demand drops, alongside low crude oil prices, pump prices may continue to fall." AAA says the most expensive gas prices in the state can be found in Ann Arbor ($3.13), Metro Detroit ($3.12) and Grand Rapids ($3.10), while the cheapest prices are in Jackson ($2.96), Benton Harbor ($2.98) and Traverse City ($2.99). AAA offers the following tips to save on gas: • Combine errands to limit driving time. • Shop around for the best gas prices in your community. • Consider paying cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card. • Remove excess weight in your vehicle. • Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduce fuel economy. • Enroll in savings programs. AAA Members who enroll in Shell's Fuel Rewards program can save 5 cents per gallon when they fill up at Shell.

$270M project has Novi community concerned around heavy traffic

The Brief The Novi community is concerned that heavy traffic in the area will get worse with the $270M project. Officials say it will actually improve traffic flow. The Showplace owner and project developer told FOX 2 there had been an extensive 8-year process. NOVI, Mich. (FOX 2) - Massive developments are coming to Novi, adding new homes and a lot more attractions, but some who live there are worried it could bring too much attention. Big picture view Novi has a lot of busy parts to it with several shopping areas, including 12 Oaks Mall and many restaurants. So on Wednesday, a Metro Detroit developer announced plans for a massive new addition to the area, including new homes, a hotel and a lot more nightlife. But some residents worry about more traffic. What they're saying The Suburban Collection Showplace is another big draw to this busy corridor, running alongside the freeway, but the developer who owns it says they have plans for an even bigger project. They say it will actually improve traffic flow. But many neighbors have questions, some saying it already gets chaotic during rush hour traffic. That's the situation now around Grand River and Beck Road, along with other parts of Novi, but with a brand-new $270 million development targeted for space across from the Suburban Collection Showplace some fear the congestion might worsen. Dig deeper The owner of the Showplace convention center is launching a large redevelopment proposal called 'Novi City West' with the goal of reimagining Grand River. Planners say it will include a new Cambria convention hotel, lots of new homes, and an entertainment district offering dining nightlife and new green space, all designed to be integrated with the Showplace. Novi Mayor Justin Fischer says the proposed development is in an area recently rezoned from an industrial format. FOX 2 asked about the concerns about more traffic. "Every time we look at a development, obviously the infrastructure - not just traffic, but water, sewer, police and fire-are always big concerns, and we take them very seriously," he said. "Grand River is actually owned by the County. Obviously, there's some state resources. We need to work with all of our partners to ensure that traffic and other infrastructure concerns are met when this project goes forward." The Showplace owner and project developer told FOX 2 there had been an extensive 8-year process of public hearings and planning that the City of Novi went through to develop the City West ordinance and that community concerns were addressed in that process. A statement reads in part: "From a public safety standpoint, this will be a major improvement by way of a controlled connection all the way from Beck Road through to Grand River for all the new developments on the South side of Grand River." What's next The biggest aspect of traffic improvement in this project will be connecting the Collector Road on the north side of Grand River all the way through to Beck Road, which will allow Showplace traffic and the new development traffic to access Beck Road with immediate departure onto East and West I-96 without ever entering onto Grand River or impacting the intersection of Grand River and Beck Road.
