Golf: Lee wins Women's PGA C'ship, Japan's Iwai 4th, Yamashita 6th
FRISCO, Texas (Kyodo) -- Australian Minjee Lee won the Women's PGA Championship on Sunday as Japan's Chisato Iwai finished five shots back in fourth and Miyu Yamashita another stroke behind in sixth at the third major of the U.S. LPGA season. Overnight leader Lee shot a 2-over-par 74 in the final round at the Fields Ranch East golf course in Frisco, Texas, but comfortably held on to a three-stroke victory with a 4-under total of 284 to secure her third major title and first since the 2022 U.S. Women's Open. Chanettee Wannasaen of Thailand and Auston Kim of the United States tied for second at 1-under, while tour rookie Iwai finished alongside Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand at 1-over to make the top 10 at a major for the first time. "It was positive that I managed to persevere throughout the day. I got the reward at the end," said the 22-year-old Iwai after carding four birdies and three bogeys. Iwai, who won her first title on tour in May at the Mexico Riviera Maya Open, was nonetheless keeping her feet on the ground despite a promising start. "I don't think it's close," she said, regarding her chance of winning a major in the near future. "Did I get a confidence boost? Just a little bit." Yamashita, also a tour rookie, had two birdies, one bogey and one double bogey for a 73 to finish in a tie with American Angel Yin. "It was tough again today. But I really learned a lot playing in the same group as (major winners) Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson," the 23-year-old said. "I'll work hard to up my level with my short game."

Solid three-week stretch on LPGA changes 2025 outlook for this former Stanford standout
Solid three-week stretch on LPGA changes 2025 outlook for this former Stanford standout A month ago, Aline Krauter was playing on the LET and Epson Tours, trying to make her way back to the LPGA. On Sunday at the ShopRite LPGA Classic, the former Stanford standout posted a career-best T-5 finish to vault into the top 80 on the CME Race to the Globe Points list. Now she's off to Oakmont to watch golf rather than play it. "Just to see something else, a change of scenery," said 25-year-old Krauter of heading to the men's U.S. Open to spectate, "and then go home, rest up, and get ready for the next major, which is super exciting. "My season was up in the air the last couple weeks, and I solidified everything with the last couple weeks and finishes, so I'm just super excited." Aline Krauter played into the U.S. Open Krauter's first LPGA start of 2025 was in late May at the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, where she finished in the top 25. The German played her way into the U.S. Women's Open, despite a slow-play penalty at sectional qualifying, and finished T-28 at Erin Hills, earning $82,017. Krauter then shot 66-69-68 at Seaview's Bay Course to finish at 10 under for the week, five strokes back of winner Jennifer Kupcho. She's now 71st on the CME points list (top 80 at season's end keep their full cards). She'll make her second major championship start of the season later this month at the KPMG Women's PGA in Texas. "I've played really solid golf over the last couple weeks, just nice to see everything come together," said Krauter. "My weekend golf has been pretty shaky, so to be under par again today is nice. Nice to see the golf game is trending in the right direction." Other players making big moves in the CME points list after ShopRite include Wei-Ling Hsu, who also took a share of fifth, Brooke Matthews (T-11) and Azahara Munoz (T-5). Runner-up Ilhee Lee, a part-time player on the LPGA, didn't have any CME points entering the week and moved to 47th.

Saigo sinks rare albatross, moves up to 2nd at LPGA Classic
GALLOWAY, New Jersey (Kyodo) -- Japanese golfer Mao Saigo scored a rare albatross Saturday on her way to a 6-under-par 65 that will see her tee off the final round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic trailing leader Lee Il Hee of South Korea by one stroke. The 23-year-old Saigo, a major winner at April's Chevron Championship, added to her highlight reel when she holed out with her second shot from 214 yards on the par-5 3rd hole at Seaview's Bay Course. She also had five birdies and a pair of bogeys to finish the second round of the 54-hole tournament tied for second at 10 under with compatriot Ayaka Furue, as well as Americans Jennifer Kupcho and Elizabeth Szokol. "I wasn't that accurate with my irons and off the tee, but I'm happy with my score," said Saigo, who already has four top-10 finishes in her brief LPGA career. "I didn't think the albatross was going in." Furue had five birdies in a bogey-free round of 66, while Lee followed her opening 63 with a 68. Japan's Miyu Yamashita and Chisato Iwai, who secured her first LPGA win at last month's Mexico Riviera Maya Open, both shot 66 to join four others tied for sixth at 8 under.

Aditi makes last round push to finish in top 10 in Mexico
Indian golfer Aditi Ashok played three under on the final day to secure her first top 10 finish of the season at the Mexico Riviera Maya Open, in Playa Del Carmen. With a final round 69, Aditi was Tied-ninth, her best this season. Starting her final round on the front nine, Aditi picked up shots on the third and fifth holes. On the back nine she started with consecutive birdies on the 10th and 11th holes before she dropped those shots on the 12th with a double bogey. The double bogey would be her only rough patch during the round. She closed off her round with her fifth birdie on the 16th hole. Chisato Iwai played the best round of the day to win her first LPGA title. Iwai opened her final day on the front nine with five birdies in the first six holes. The back nine looked to be a similar story as she birdied the 10th and 13th holes. After her sole bogey of the round on the 14th hole Iwai slowed down and kept a clean sheet on the final four holes to finish the round with a score of 66 six under and closed the campaign six shots ahead of Jenny Bae. Her total score for the tournament was 12 under par for a six-shot win. LPGA rookie and day three leader Jenny Bae had a poor start to her final day that was in direct contrast to Iwai. Bae opened the day with bogeys on the first and second holes and went on to finish with 73 to be second at a distant 6-under. Haeji Kang (71) was third at 5-under.

Japan's Iwai wins first LPGA title
Japanese rookie Chisato Iwai became the fifth Rolex FirstTime Winner on the 2025 LPGA Tour with a six-shot victory at the inaugural Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba. Heading into the final round at El Camaleón Golf Course at Mayakoba one shot behind 54-hole leader Jenny Bae of the United States, Iwai quickly turned what could have been an exciting finish into a Sunday romp. The 22-year-old Japanese player seized the lead with a first-hole birdie as Bae made bogey. Four birdies in a row from Holes 3 to 6 saw Iwai surge further ahead, and she never looked back. Iwai's closing six-under-par 66 gave her a 72-hole aggregate of 12-under-par 276 (68-74-68-66), while Bae hung on for second place on 6-under-par 282 (69-69-71-73) following a final round 73. Korean Haeji Kang was third on 5-under-par 283, one shot clear of compatriots Jenny Shin, Somi Lee and Hye-Jin Choi, China's Weiwei Zhang, and Sweden's Linn Grant. 'I just focused on my routine and stayed calm. No matter how many birdies I made today and how far ahead I was, my mindset didn't change. I just kept thinking of trying to make the next birdie and trying to stay positive,' said Iwai, who is the third rookie to win on the LPGA Tour this season. This is the first time in 10 years that the LPGA Tour has seen three rookie victories before the end of May. Iwai is the 12th different winner on tour this season, pocketing US$375,000 (RM1.58m) for her efforts. An eight-time winner on the Japan LPGA Tour, Iwai finished second at last year's LPGA Final Qualifying to earn her LPGA Tour membership for the 2025 season. Her twin sister Akie is also a rookie on the LPGA Tour and finished tied 16th in Mexico on 2-under-par. Malaysia's Ashley Lau, who got into the field through her Epson Tour status, finished tied 32nd on one-over-par 289 (71-73-71-74). The LPGA Tour heads back to the United States for the second Major of the 2025 season, the US Women's Open presented by Ally at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. – LPGA
