Sasol Westville packs Nelson Mandela Day hampers
THE Sasol Westville office celebrated International Mandela Day on Thursday, July 17, by packing and distributing nutritious hampers to vulnerable groups, particularly those affected by the withdrawal of international NGO funding. Sasol employees and those from the National Petroleum Refiners of South Africa (Natref), as well as from the eThekwini Department of Social Development (DSD), which partnered with the chemicals and energy company for the initiative, spent 67 minutes preparing the hampers which were distributed to two KwaMashu-based NGOs, including the elderly home KwaMashu Christian Care Society. The acting head of department at DSD, Maphili Mhlongo, said the department supports and appreciates the initiative, which is a result of contributions made by Sasol employees. 'We really appreciate this partnership as the department of Social Development, which works with the vulnerable members of our communities. This gesture will mean a lot to people who will sleep with smiles on their faces,' said Mhlongo. DSD Chief Director of the eThekwini cluster, Fezile Luthuli, said the hampers were not only about their contents but also about how they make the recipients feel. 'We really appreciate and support this initiative and we are really looking forward to this partnership which we wish to see grow where we can easily call for emergency help for the communities we work with,' said Luthuli, who also applauded the two Sasol Westville employees who have contributed towards Nelson Mandela Day initiatives for the past 10 years. The two Sasol employees have been donating from their pockets towards Nelson Mandela Day initiatives for the past 10 years. For more from the Highway Mail, follow us on Facebook , X and Instagram. Empangeni mall construction workers hand over memorandum to employer
Workers at the construction site of the Prince Buthelezi Mall in Empangeni are expected to resume work tomorrow (Thursday) after downing tools and handing over a memorandum of demands to the employer on Wednesday. The National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (Numsa) affiliated members accused the employer of flouting labour relations laws, having allegedly recruited foreign nationals without legitimate documentation. Leading a peaceful march to hand over a memorandum of demands to the subcontractor, Numsa organiser in Richards Bay, Ntokozo Mhlongo said their gathering was owing to growing dissatisfaction of their members employed by the construction company. 'The employees, with an understanding of the challenges that they are confronted with, have taken a decision to join Numsa and project their chosen union as their shield and spear,' said Mhlongo. The workers' list of demands include that the company should urgently afford the union organisational rights enshrined in Section 21 of the Labour Law Act; recruitment of 90% of residents; compliant with the rate of pay governed by the bargaining council for civil engineering; and payment of workers per national minimum wage. 'There are allegations of workers not being paid for overtime worked, Sundays and public holidays. Numsa wants the company to urgently comply with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act in terms of how Sundays and public holidays should be paid,' said Mhlongo. The union further alleged that 'bullying acts' in the company are not properly addressed by management. 'Numsa, therefore, wants the company to urgently investigate and take appropriate steps as corrective measures on this matter,' added Mhlongo. Speaking on behalf of the mall developers, a spokesperson confirmed that they are aware of the matter and the issues raised on Wednesday morning, but that these have since been resolved, and construction work continues on site. The spokesperson said no construction time had been lost. Addressing employment concerns, the spokesperson said they always place a lot of pressure on the subcontractors to ensure recruitment of local workers. Don't have the ZO app? Additionally, Mhlongo believes that Dr Irvin Khoza is well-versed in finding new coaches for the club. 'Dr. Irvin Khoza has always managed to come up with surprises over the years. I trust his judgement; they've been in this game for a long time,' Mhlongo told KickOff . 'It's not for us to speculate. When they brought Jose Riveiro here, nobody knew about him, and look how well he did. Dr. Khoza has vast experience in bringing coaches here, so perhaps there's something the chairman saw in the new coach. 'It was relatively easy for the chairman to make a decision on the new coach since he was already in the country. Maybe they appreciated what he did for Marumo Gallants last season. AmaZulu's attempts to lure two players hit contractual snags, sources say
After playing one game in his first season, Mhlongo demonstrated major growth over the next three campaigns, securing his place in the senior squad amid multiple coaching changes. The KwaZulu-Natal-born midfielder played 20 games in all competitions in 2024-25. Mhlongo has caught the eye of rival clubs with a source saying the player was spotted training with Usuthu on their return for preseason and recently completed a medical assessment with them. 'He was meant to sign the contract, everything was finalised, then boom, it appeared he is still under contract with Bay', the insider, who did not want to be named, said. However, that door has apparently been shut, Bay maintaining the player remains contractually bound to them. 'Mhlongo's contract is left with two years and an option to extend for one year,' Bay chair Sfiso 'Jomo' Biyela said. While that deal seems to have fallen through, after a mass offload of 16 players, AmaZulu have attempted to secure talented winger Maqokolo.
