Steelers in Talks to Trade for Pro Bowl Tight End
Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith (9) runs a route against the Houston Texans in the second half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Dec 15, 2024 in Houston. (AP Photo/Maria Lysaker) The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly in talks with the Miami Dolphins to trade for Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. The Pittsburgh Steelers have had trade discussions with the Miami Dolphins about Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter. Advertisement Smith, 29, is coming off the best season of his eight-year NFL career in 2024, when he recorded a career-high 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. But he is scheduled to make just $4.8 million this season and has expressed interest in a new deal. Smith's preference is to stay in Miami under a reworked deal, but if the team is unwilling to give him that, a trade could be executed. The news comes as a bit of a surprise since the Steelers already made Pat Freiermuth one of the highest-paid tight ends in the league last offseason with a four-year, $48.4 million contract extension. They also have tight ends Darnell Washington, Donald Parham Jr. and Connor Heyward on the roster. However, Pittsburgh has been looking to add another playmaker to its offense since trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month. And given the crop of wide receivers left on the open market, Smith may be the best offensive weapon available. Advertisement Smith also has a connection with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. The two spent time together with the Tennessee Titans from 2017-20 and then most recently with the Atlanta Falcons (2023). Smith began his NFL career as a third-round pick (No. 100 overall) by the Titans in the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons in Tennessee before joining the New England Patriots for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The 6-foot-3, 248-pound tight end then signed with the Falcons to reunite with Smith in Atlanta before heading to the Dolphins last year. Smith has 307 receptions for 3,307 yards and 28 touchdowns in his professional career. Steelers and Dolphins discuss trade for tight end Jonnu Smith, report says
The Miami Dolphins have reportedly had trade talks with the Pittsburgh Steelers involving tight end Jonnu Smith. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the two teams have discussed a potential trade centered around the Pro Bowl tight end amid contract talks. CBS Miami's Mike Cugno reports, citing a source, that Smith is looking to rework his current two-year contract. ESPN reported that Smith's preference is to stay in Miami under a revised deal. He reportedly signed a two-year, $8.4 million deal with the Dolphins last offseason after playing the 2023 season with the Atlanta Falcons. Jonnu Smith trade talks after breakout season Smith is coming off a career-best 88-catch season. He added 884 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. All three marks were records for a Dolphins tight end in a single season. It was a breakout campaign for Smith, who had a larger role on offense as wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle dealt with injuries. Smith was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans out of Florida International University. He spent four seasons in Tennessee before two years with the New England Patriots. Pittsburgh's interest in Smith is tied to offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who was Tennessee's tight ends coach when Jonnu Smith was on the team. Arthur Smith also traded for the tight end during his stint as head coach of the Falcons. Pittsburgh currently has 2021 second-round pick Pat Freiermuth on its tight end depth chart, as well as 2023 third-round pick Darnell Washington. Freiermuth inked an extension with Pittsburgh last season. Earlier this offseason, the Steelers traded wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The 2025 NFL season has started to kick off, and while teams will begin to perfect their 53-man rosters, there are still chances at blockbuster trades. In fact, the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly engaged in talks for a Pro Bowl talent. The post reads: "The Dolphins have had trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers about their lone Pro-Bowl selection last season, tight end Jonnu Smith, per league sources. Those talks came after Smith expressed an interest in reworking his deal that is scheduled to pay him $4.8 million this season. With Smith seeking a new contract, Miami has sought a trade partner. Last season, Smith set the franchise record for a tight end in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Smith's preference, per sources, is to stay in Miami under a reworked deal." MoreMore news: Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Drops Major Hint at Travis Kelce's Playing Future This is a huge development considering Smith was the lone Pro Bowler that the Dolphins had in 2024. He secured 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns, with the receptions setting a new franchise record. Smith became one of the better offensive weapons that the Dolphins had. In terms of receiving yards, Smith only trailed Tyreek Hill, who secured 959. Smith's eight touchdowns were also the most among receivers. He proved in 2024 that he is a viable pass catcher and blocker. It is strange that the Dolphins are not wanting to award him a reworked deal. According to the report from Schefter, Smith also prefers to remain in Miami, but has asked for a new deal. He is set to make $4.8 million this season, but the tight end could be looking for more guaranteed money. The usual case for reworked deals is players wanting to ensure they have a guaranteed amount of money to be paid in case of injury. Smith has been one of the most durable players in the NFL, playing in all 17 games the past two seasons. Miami should play ball with Smith and figure out the contract issue, as they only have Julian Hill, Pharaoh Brown, and Tanner Conner on the roster right now. The Dolphins are going to look far different in 2025, but if they choose to trade Smith to the Steelers, they will be without one of their most important offensive weapons. Steelers reportedly eyeing TE Jonnu Smith in potential trade with Dolphins
Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith could be on the move after a career-best 2024 campaign. (AP Photo/Doug Murray) The Pittsburgh Steelers are in trade talks to add another weapon to the offense, eyeing Miami Dolphins veteran tight end Jonnu Smith as a potential trade target, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The move would reunite Smith with current Steelers OC Arthur Smith, for whom he's played in three of his eight NFL seasons (2019, 2020, 2023). Advertisement Smith, 29, is coming off a career-best year in his first season with the Dolphins. In his eighth NFL season, he posted career highs in catches (88), receiving yards (884) and receiving success rate (63.1%) in 2024, while matching a previous career high with eight receiving touchdowns per Pro Football Reference. Smith signed a two-year, $10 million contract with Miami as a free agent in March of 2024, but Schefter reports that Smith is seeking a re-worked contract after his breakout campaign. This story will be updated.

Miami Dolphins (past and present) we'd love to see in Summer Olympics flag football
NFL owners are about to huddle to make an important decision: whether to allow active players to participate in flag football in the 2028 Summer Olympics. We know flag football is becoming an Olympic sport. We know the NFL is solidly behind the drive, thinking it will do nothing but expand interest in football globally, across a wider variety of demographics. Advertisement We also know some players — including the very vocal Miami Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill — say they'd love to participate. All that's left to sort out is whether owners are willing to risk players getting injured in the process. It's not so much a contact risk as it is a risk in changing direction or suffering soft-tissue ailments. Owners will hold their spring meeting in Minneapolis on May 20-21 to vote on whether to allow no more than one player from each team to participate on a particular national team, in addition to each team's designated international player. The 2028 Games will run July 14-30, so the overlap with training camp would be minimal. Advertisement The resolution before owners: "The membership believes that participation by NFL players in flag football during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California will support such growth and advance several league interests, including increasing fan and public interest in flag football, expanding the global reach of the NFL.' Did somebody say this could lead to even more revenue for the NFL? Is that supposed to motivate owners to vote yes (wink, wink)? With all this in mind, let's take a look at some Dolphins, past and present, we'd like to see in flag football. See if it matches your wish list: Tyreek Hill thought Indianapolis Colts' NFL schedule video poking fun at him was funny Active Miami Dolphins we'd like to see in flag football at the Summer Olympics WR Tyreek Hill Maybe after he races Noah Lyles, he can set his sights set on the Olympics. CB Ethan Bonner There's some thought he might actually be the fastest guy on the team. Let's see it. OT Patrick Paul He's listed at 6-feet-7, 332, but if you stand next to him you'd swear he's bigger than that. What does that have to do with flag football? Picture him barreling toward guys half his size, and whether they'd really care to take a swipe at his flags. RB Jaylen Wright We only got a taste of his shiftiness in his rookie year of 2024. This might be the perfect setting for him. WR Anthony Schwartz Practice squad receiver also has a claim to being fastest at the facility.
