Derry City beaten by Bohs thanks to early penalty
Derry City fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bohemians at Dalymount Park on Friday evening. A Dayle Rooney penalty that was awarded with less than a minute on the clock was the difference between the sides in Candystripes finished the game with ten men and they are now winless in their past three games. This result combined with victories for St Patrick's Athletic and Shelbourne sees them drop down to Lynch's plans were immediately thrown out of the window when Rob Hennessey pointed to the spot just seconds into proceedings when James Clarke's strike was adjudged to have been handled by Mark looked to be a harsh call but Rooney didn't care and he dispatched a perfect kick high to Brian Maher's right. Derry did ride out that early storm and did not take on any more damage but struggled to respond at the other end. Michael Duffy managed to get to the by-line on the left and whipped in a dangerous cross but it was flicked away well by Rob the other end, Kevin Holt did well to block Ross Tierney's strike and the Scottish defender was breathing a sigh of relief when his giveaway was not punished by Clarke who dragged wide. The former Drogheda man had another good chance just a minute later but couldn't keep his effort from the edge of the box down. The Candystripes had the last chance of the first half in stoppage time when Duffy laid the ball off nicely for Paul McMullan but Crystal Palace loanee Sean Grahan bravely diverted his shot away. Despite a triple change for the away side at the break, Alan Reynolds' hosts started the better in the second half too and had the first chance. Jordan Flores met a corner at the front post but his powerful header flashed wide. Having survived that, the visitors went up the other end and felt that they should have had a penalty of their own when Bohs captain Dawson Devoy leaned into Paul Mullen in the box. The Derry bench was apoplectic and their frustration grew when Mullen nodded Ronan Boyce's cross over just before the hour already lost Shane Ferguson to injury in the first half, Lynch had more bad injury luck in the second half when half-time sub Ben Doherty limped off having only returned from an a injury layoff last replacement Robbie Benson was involved immediately and was fortunate that the referee believed his foul on Tierney was outside the box. The former Dundalk man then came inches away from a leveller shortly after but, under pressure from Niall Morahan, couldn't connect with Adam O'Reilly's inviting ball across the visitors were in the ascendency and another replacement Dom Thomas caught McMullan's delivery flush with a volley but Grahan was in the way again as he cleared off the line. However, their task was hindered as Benson's eventful evening continued in the worst way. With eight minutes remaining, he was shown a second yellow card less than 25 minutes after coming and Mullen's caution for a dive shortly after summed up a frustrating evening for the men from the Brandywell as, despite Carl Winchester stinging the palms of Kacper Chorazka in stoppage time, they enter the international break on back-to-back defeats. Next up is a home game against Galway United on 13 June.

Zalatoris out until fall after undergoing second back surgery
The 28-year-old American, whose only PGA Tour triumph came at the 2022 St. Jude Championship, revealed on social media he decided on the operation after missing the cut at the PGA Championship. "This spring, I started feeling some discomfort and instability in my back that progressively got worse," Zalatoris said on Instagram. "Following the PGA Championship, an MRI showed that I had re-herniated two discs. After discussing the options with my medical team, I underwent surgery this past Friday with Dr. Michael Duffy of the Texas Back Institute. "I'm happy to say that I woke up feeling good and excited about my long-term back health. Time to focus on my recovery and get back after it. "Looking forward to seeing everyone in the fall." That timetable means world number 84 Zalatoris will miss June's US Open and July's British Open as well as August's PGA Tour playoffs. Zalatoris underwent microdiscectomy back surgery in April 2023 after suffering back injuries at the Masters practice area and missed the next eight months. He has not managed a top-10 finish since sharing ninth at last year's Masters, his seventh top-10 effort in a major. Zalatoris is a three-time major runner-up, taking second at the 2021 Masters and 2022 PGA Championship and sharing second at the 2022 US Open.

Derry City come from behind to beat Cork at Brandywell
Derry City came from behind to beat Cork City 2-1 and claim their third win of the Premier Division season. Second half strikes from Michael Duffy and Ronan Boyce were enough to give the Candystripes victory at Brandywell after Kitt Nelson had headed the visitors in front. Tiernan Lynch's side move up to sixth in the table and are now four points behind unlikely leaders Drogheda United after eight games whilst Cork fall to ninth position and are just three points above bottom side Sligo Rovers. Derry are back at the Brandywell on Friday, 11 April as Drogheda come to town. The Tribesmen took an unlikely lead on 14 minutes as Brian Maher seemed to misjudge Benny Couto's cross allowing Nelson, who was unmarked at the back post, to head into the empty net. The Candystripes would trail 1-0 at the break as Sean Patton was twice denied in quick succession by Tienn Troust in the Cork goal while Kevin Holt came close with a header. Derry hosted fans in their new North Stand for the first time tonight and they were treated to a front row seat for all of the action in the second failed to clear a home corner allowing Boyce to fire in the equaliser from an acrobatic bicycle kick on 65 minutes. Less than 10 minutes later Duffy found a yard of space in the box and sent a powerful effort through the legs of Troust to seal a much needed three points for his side. That was Duffy's fifth goal of the season and with Derry only scoring seven so far, his goals have directly contributed to 10 of his side's 11 points so far this season.

Derry slip to bottom spot after home draw with Galway
Derry City sit in the Premier Division basement place after drawing 1-1 with Galway United at the Brandywell. Michael Duffy's second half penalty for City cancelled out Moses Dyer's goal on the stroke of half time. The result ends the Candystripes' losing streak at three but Tiernan Lynch has now won just one of his opening five games as manager. Shamrock Rovers' first domestic win of the season over St. Pat's means that Derry are now propping up the table. The hosts had the first chance when Liam Boyce found Dom Thomas on just three minutes but the Scottish forward poked wide. While clear-cut chances were hard to come by in the first half, any that did arrive came the way of Derry. Duffy was probing as always and his square ball was tantalisingly out of the reach of a sliding Boyce. Thomas went close again 10 minutes before the break but saw his effort parried by Evan Watts in the Galway goal before Duffy blazed the rebound over. Just as it looked as though we would head into the break scoreless, the home side's defensive frailties were laid bare by the visitors' only meaningful attack in the opening period. Ed McCarthy launched a long throw into the box that was flicked on and slid home at the back post by Dyer. A simple set-piece goal that the Candytsripes failed to deal with. Derry gifted leveller After their first-half impotence, Derry were gifted a way back into proceedings on 52 minutes. Sadou Diallo's drilled shot from the edge of the box was inexplicably blocked by the outstretched elbow of Patrick gave Duffy the chance to equalise from twelve yards - he duly accepted as he blasted an emphatic spot-kick into the roof of the bet. The home crowd were urging their side on for more but they did not immediately kick on. Galway sub David Hurley almost caught them cold with a mazy run and shot that Brian Maher repelled on 70 minutes before Ronan Boyce also decided to go it alone immediately after with some fancy footwork of his own but his effort went wasn't quite the Alamo but the Candystripes did have a couple of chances to grab all three points, most notably when substitute Pat Hoban connected with Ben Doherty's deep cross but his header landed on the roof of the net. There were Derry hearts in mouths in stoppage time when Kevin Holt's mistimed clearing header was seized upon by Jimmy Keohane but Maher kept him out as both sides had to settle for a point apiece. Derry are back on their travels next Saturday evening as they travel to the Showgrounds to take on Sligo Rovers.
