NDP Labour Critic calls out Province on Lack of Anti-Scab Legislation as the Strike at Villa Colombo Enters the Eighth Week

TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today is the eighth week of picketing for CUPE local 5525. To mark the occasion, the 24 racialized Personal Care Workers of CUPE 5525, welcomed NDP Shadow Minister for Labour, Jamie West and Michelle Campbell, President of CUPE 1734, to their picket line. The workers have been on the picket lines since May 28 th, after the employer tabled a proposal which offered no benefits for the part time members of the bargaining unit, and significant reduction on sick-day provisions. 'Federal workers are now protected by anti-scab legislation which makes it illegal for federally regulated employers to use replacement workers during a strike or lockout,' said Jamie West, NDP Shadow Minister of Labour. 'The Ontario NDP has tabled legislation to ban the use of scab-labour over a dozen times, only to have the proposal voted down by successive provincial Liberal and Conservative governments. Because of Doug Ford, Ontario still does not have anti-scab legislation for workers in our province, and the 24 striking members of CUPE 5525 at Villa Colombo are being disrespected everyday their employer brings in scabs. I am ashamed of the way these workers are being treated in 2025.' 'Villa Colombo continues to choose confrontation over compassion. These striking workers have devoted years, some decades, caring for residents with dignity and dedication. Bringing in scabs hasn't solved their crisis, it's created one,' added Michelle Campbell, President of CUPE Local 1734. 'When employers bring in scabs instead of settling things fairly, they make one thing clear: staff trusted to care for seniors can be discarded the moment it becomes inconvenient. CUPE 1734 unequivocally condemns Villa Colombo's actions and demands they return to the table with a fair deal for CUPE 5525 members.' :pp/cope491

Shire of Harvey ‘gives a hoot' becoming the newest South West shire to join the Owl Friendly movement

The Shire of Harvey has shown it 'gives a hoot' by becoming the newest South West shire to join the Owl Friendly movement. The move will see the shire eliminating the use of Second Generation Anti-Coagulant Rodenticides within shire-owned buildings and pushing to inform the community of the dangers of the insidious and lethal poison. The Owl Friendly movement initially stated in Margaret River when researchers looking at the elusive masked owl saw the impact SGARs were having on the native owl population. Since then, the movement has grown to cover shires and cities across the State, with the City of Cockburn, City of Geraldton and most recently the City of Stirling among just some of the Local governments across WA to adopt an Owl Friendly status. The movement specifically targets SGARs — often advertised as one dose, one kill poisons — which can take up to a week to kill an animal after ingesting and take a significant amount of time to break down once in the environment. Due to the poison's longevity and its delay in causing death, rodents which have ingested the poison can be caught and devoured by other animals — such as owls, snakes or even pet dogs and cats — delivering the deadly dose intended to the rodent its devourer instead. The poison has proved so pervasive it has been found in possums across Australia and has been found at lethal levels within a critically endangered Carnaby's black-cockatoo. In an even more recent Edith Cowan University-led research paper SGARs were found in five of Australia's large native carnivores from WA's chuditch to the critically endangered Tasmanian devil. SGARs have been banned in the United Kingdom and California, but still are able to be purchased on the shelf in most Australian stores. The move to make the Shire of Harvey Owl Friendly came from shire president Michelle Campbell who said it was a simple act the shire could adopt, and came at an apt time with the shire also voting to adopt its first biodiversity strategy earlier in the meeting. 'We are not the first local government to consider this and hopefully not the last moving forward,' she said. 'Second generation rodenticides are indiscriminate and the eradication of its use will not only be beneficial to owls and birds, but also to many other native animals and our domestic pets.'

Harvey's little library filled as close to 100 people pack in to take part in the Biggest Morning Tea

Harvey's little library was filled to the brim as almost 100 people packed in to for tea and biscuits for a cause on Thursday. The crowds came together in the Harvey War Memorial Library to take part in the Biggest Morning Tea in a bid to raise money for the Cancer Council WA. With music performed by the Harvey Ukulele Group Strummers, platters of food and an auction to win major awards were on offer. Shire president Michelle Campbell said it was outstanding to have so many come people together to raise money for cancer research. 'This is a fabulous cause,' she said. 'We've been on many journeys with our family members dealing with cancer, and I'm sure there's lots in the room that have known someone, or have personally been on that journey with cancer as well.' Cr Campbell thanked the community for turning up in force, and bringing several platters of food for everyone to share. 'Everybody has contributed so much today,' she said. After enjoying the spread of food, the community took part in an auction hosted by Harvey shire councillor and auctioneer Tiny Holly. Library special projects manager Ruth Campbell-Hicks said there was more than $2000 worth of items on action all of which had been donated from local business and community members. 'I've got a great big, long list of people, which I won't go through, but suffice it to say, just about every business in town has given us something which is really amazing,' she said.
