Thousands Hail Spurs' Europa League Heroes in Victory Parade

Europa League winners Tottenham were saluted by around 150,000 ecstatic fans during an open-top bus parade through north London on Friday. Ange Postecoglou's side beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao on Wednesday to end the club's 17-year trophy drought. Brennan Johnson's first-half strike sealed Tottenham's first European silverware for 41 years, making amends for the team's dismal form in the Premier League this term, said AFP. A white double-decker bus with 'Europa League winners' emblazoned on it carried Tottenham's players on an "emotional" journey to their stadium. Jubilant supporters packed the streets to hail the players, with chants of "glory, glory Tottenham Hotspur" echoing as the bus rolled past. Tottenham's South Korean captain Son Heung-min held the trophy aloft on the top deck of the bus as his team-mates proudly displayed their winners' medals and Postecoglou waved to fans. An estimated 150,000 supporters were expected for a parade that was due to last around 90 minutes. Tottenham players were seen partying in a London nightclub after arriving back from Bilbao. And Dutch defender Micky van de Ven soaked up the scene at the parade and said: "Unbelievable man. Yeah I slept only a little bit since then. "Emotional, so emotional. The season we've had, it was so difficult, but we got the trophy and we're so happy. I'm so proud of the boys. "If you experience this, you want to do it over and over again. We're going to try to do the same beautiful things next season." It was Tottenham's first trophy parade since winning their last FA Cup in 1991, while their last silverware came in the 2008 League Cup. Postecoglou's side are currently 17th in the Premier League, one place above the relegation zone, as they face up to their worst finish since 1976-77. But Graham Roberts -- a member of the Tottenham team that won the 1984 UEFA Cup -- backed his old club to chase more silverware now the trophy curse is over. "This will give them belief now. All that pressure that was there, that's gone," Roberts said. "We have to strengthen our squad, but I think we have a great bunch of boys. "They love Ange, they went round him, they cuddled him, they wanted him in the photos. The team spirit is there. "We'll get more now, the rest will come. Wednesday was one of the greatest nights. I had tears in my eyes. The fans were magnificent. They deserve it."

The Tottenham party goes on! Spurs stars continue to celebrate Europa League triumph in Mayfair nightclub before Friday's trophy parade

Tottenham 's stars continued to celebrate their historic Europa League triumph on Thursday night. Spurs lifted their first trophy in 17 years on Wednesday as they beat Man United 1-0 in Bilbao to turn what has been a dismal campaign into a memorable one. Ange Postecoglou 's side celebrated long into the night in Spain, with several hilarious clips circulating on social media, before they flew back yesterday morning. Several stars looked worse for wear as they boarded the team bus from their hotel before heading to the airport after the celebrations continued past 3am. However, the party continued upon their return to England as they understandably looked to make the most of completing such an iconic feat for the club. The festivities turned to an upmarket Mayfair nightclub as footage shared to social media showed Spurs' squad celebrating long into the night again. The venue of choice was the Mistress of Mayfair, where bottles of wine can cost upwards of five figures. Several clips showed a party atmosphere at the venue, with the squad singing along to We Are The Champions by Queen in one while waving napkins above their heads. Micky van de Ven and Ragu Dragusin were leading to the songs at the venue, which was packed, hinting that they were joined by their partners and friends. In another clip, Freed From Desire was being played and everyone inside the venue was joining in, before the DJ could be heard readapting the song to 'Richie's on fire' in relation to Richarlison. The Spurs forward was also wearing a retro Tottenham shirt despite the dress code for the venue being 'chic elegant'. Meanwhile, several other classic songs were played across the night, including Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond, while a chorus of 'Johnson again ole ole' was belted out, in reference to the Welshman's winner on Wednesday. The squad seemed to be enjoying a memorable evening as several further videos showed a variety of players standing on tables and embracing each other, including James Maddison, Ben Davies and Son Heung-min. Thursday night's antics come after clips of Wednesday's after-party at Bilbao's Carlton Hotel showed players singing, dancing on tables and drinking into the night, many of them still in their match kit with medals on. Earlier, upon their departure from the stadium, Yves Bissmoua appeared in an explosion of drum and bass, singing and dancing through the media aisles, shirtless and in shades, with a yellow baseball cap turned backwards on his head, a booming speaker strapped around his waist and a winners' medal around his neck. After the squad returned to the hotel, Postecoglou also addressed the families of players and staff, thanking them for their part in the success and explaining how he had 'never been prouder' to manage a group. 'Outstanding people, not just outstanding players,' said Postecoglou, who has driven the family theme hard into his players this season, forging a spirit of togetherness to help them through the most testing times, when they were desperately short of fit players in midwinter.

Drought over – Spurs join Palace and Newcastle in ending long wait for trophy

Brennan Johnson's goal and Micky van de Ven's goal-line clearance saw Spurs join Newcastle and Crystal Palace in overdue celebrations and here, the PA news agency looks at the trio's trophy records. Spurs' win kept up Ange Postecoglou's proudly stated record of always winning a trophy in his second season in a managerial job, following Australian titles with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar, the Asian Cup with Australia – and age-group titles with the under-17 and under-20 sides – the J1 League with Yokohama and a domestic treble at Celtic. It made him the first boss to bring silverware to Spurs for 17 years, since the 2008 League Cup under Juande Ramos, while it was their first European success since the UEFA Cup – predecessor of the Europa League – in 1984. Their 18 major trophies include two league titles, eight FA Cups, four League Cups, another UEFA Cup to make it three wins in this competition, and the 1963 Cup Winners' Cup. The Magpies' drought, stretching back to the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, had received even more attention than that of Spurs and the celebrations after their 2-1 Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool reflected that. Eddie Howe's side ended that 56-year wait and secured a first ever League Cup and first domestic trophy in seven decades, since the 1955 FA Cup. With six wins in the latter competition and four league titles, the last in 1927, Newcastle have 12 major trophies in all. The FA Cup is the first major trophy added to Palace's cabinet in their near 120-year history as Eberechi Eze's goal against Manchester City cemented himself, boss Oliver Glasner et al in the club's history. They had twice been runners-up in the competition, losing the 1990 and 2016 finals to Manchester United, with their other honours consisting of several promotions and the 1991 Full Members Cup – the competition currently known as the Vertu Trophy and contested by League One and Two clubs. Bournemouth, Brentford, Brighton and Fulham are the remaining Premier League teams with no major trophies to their name. The Cottagers lost the 2010 Europa League and 1975 FA Cup finals, while Brighton's lost a 1983 FA Cup final replay and won the Charity Shield against Football League champions Aston Villa after their 1910 Southern League title. Wolves' last trophy was the 1980 League Cup, while Nottingham Forest and Everton are also without a top-level trophy in the 21st century. Next season will add promoted Leeds and Burnley and play-off winners Sheffield United or Sunderland to that list.
