Student e-bike riders in five East Bay cities will see more safety enforcement

E-bikes have become hugely popular, especially with young people, and there are concerns that innovation is outpacing common sense. When the school bell rings at Stone Valley Middle School, the kids head for home. But when it comes to how they get there, times have changed. The electric bicycle, or e-bike, has taken Stone Valley by storm, and on Wednesday, local bike safety advocates Alan Kalin and Bruce Bilodeau were welcomed in to make a count of the number and types of e-bikes in the school's bicycle rack area. The change has been astounding. "I was here in February and counted 51 electric motorcycles, known as e-motos. Today, there are 70. That's only in three months. You can only imagine how many more by the time the school starts again in September," said Kalin. As for regular bikes, they counted 12. Kalin said Stone Valley no longer has a bike rack. It's now a parking lot. "E-bikes are amazing. They really are. But these are not e-bikes. These are not e-bikes," said Kalin. "They are electric motorcycles, and there is a difference. They weigh anywhere from 80 to 100 pounds. They will go anywhere from 20 to 35 miles per hour, depending on how you modify it." Class 2 e-bikes are the most popular, with a top speed of 20 miles per hour, and as a result, the law says they can be ridden at any age without a license. But the speed limit on many of them can be remotely raised or eliminated altogether through an online app. "The (e-bike) classes are dependent as far as their top speed goes. But when they modify them, they go from 20 mph to up to 50 mph," said Capt. Miguel Campos with Dublin Police Services. On Wednesday, Dublin joined other nearby departments for an E-bike Safety Enforcement Day. They ended up issuing 36 warnings and 12 citations for reckless riding. "We just did it in the morning, and we're going to focus on after-school," said Campos. "During the summertime, we're going to ramp that up because kids are now going to be out of school, so they're going to be riding these vehicles all hours of the day." But back at the middle school, Bilodeau said he's not sure how they can even enforce the current rules when the bikes can be modified so easily. "And that 'Class 2' becomes meaningless," he said. "So, as an enforcement issue for a policeman, he comes up and sees a kid riding this — It's a Class 2. He can't enforce anything. So, they don't. They don't enforce it, and neither can the schools. So, what do you do? And what Al and I are hoping to do is to take that Class 2 and say, kids under 16 should not be riding Class 2, period." That's a growing sentiment, banning throttle-controlled bikes for anyone under 16. "They do look fun," said Bilodeau. "But a kid with a throttle on the street? You're asking for trouble. Kids need to know what the consequences are, and they don't have a consequences gene when they're 12." It wasn't long ago that e-bikes just helped you pedal. Now, they've become full-fledged motorcycles. Dublin is currently working to draft local ordinances that would regulate how and where e-bikes can be operated. Across the state, lawmakers are racing to catch up to the rapidly evolving technology. And they're probably having to go faster than 20 mph to do it.

Local middle school wrestler representing U.S. in international competition

SULLIVAN, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — One middle school wrestler in Sullivan has been dominating at the local, state, and national level. Now, he is ready to show his talents to the world. 8th grader at Sullivan Middle School, Spenser McCammon, will soon trade out his Sullivan purple for a red, white, and blue singlet, representing team USA at this year's Pan-American Wrestling Championships. 'I think it will be a pretty cool experience', Spenser McCammon said. 'Hopefully it's the first of many.' McCammon has been living and breathing wrestling since he was born, watching his father, Jade, compete on a national level. Jade said his son picked up the sport naturally. 'Having him in the room, just being around it, before he even competed in it, really gave him a leg up', Jade McCammon said. 'He was learning through osmosis, and he didn't even know it.' Spenser began competing himself as soon as he entered kindergarten, racking up wins with ease, so he strived for more. 'He said he wanted to win a state title, so we went and did that the next year', Jade McCammon said. 'I asked him what he wanted to do after that and he said he wanted to be a triple crown, which is all three state titles in one year, so he went on a four-year run where he did that every year. Then I asked him what he wanted to do after that and he said national titles, so he's done that. Now, present day, he's making a USA team.' Although the wins were coming in bunches, McCammon said his relationship with the sport hasn't been all positive. 'I've kind of fell in and out of love with it, sometimes you can go through a little adversity', Spenser McCammon said. 'I've really fallen back in love with it over these last 8-9 months.' In April, McCammon made a name for himself in Las Vegas at the U.S. Open, where nearly 80 wrestlers competed at the 15U level. He said that didn't waiver his confidence. 'I've always been in the running with some of the best guys in the country, just at any competition, so I knew I had a chance at being up there with them', Spenser McCammon said. Not long after, he got the news. 'We kind of had an idea, just from the system that they used, but I didn't really figure it out until two weeks ago', Spenser McCammon said. On May 22nd and 24th, McCammon will represent the United States in the 48-kilogram weight division at the Pan-American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala. But of course, he isn't looking to stop there. 'It's going to be a goal from here on out, but next year I'll be eligible to make a world team, not just the Pan Ams', Spenser McCammon said. 'That will be the goal for the coming years.' The Pan-American Championships will be both a team and individual competition for Spenser. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Florida middle school teacher, coach accused of having sex with student

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Punta Gorda Middle School teacher and coach is accused of having sex with a student on campus and recording the encounter. According to an arrest affidavit, the victim's mother discovered inappropriate text messages between the girl and 36-year-old Dagoberto Miguel Pena. 'I truly love you': Manatee County teacher accused of sending 5th grader inappropriate letter In several text messages between the teacher and student, Pena told her, 'U look gorgeous,' and requested pictures of the girl, the affidavit said. Pena also sent 'a pornographic video to the victim,' followed up by a message that read, 'Erase!!' NBC affiliate WBBH reported that Pena admitted to deleting 400 messages. Officials said the crimes took place between March 2024 and April 24, 2025. The victim admitted to having sexual intercourse with Pena four times. Following one intersexual encounter at a 'game,' the victim told authorities she didn't report the incident because Pena told her he could go to jail if anyone found out. The report detailed another encounter on a training table after a workout, and one in an office, both on school grounds. Vet who killed girlfriend and her 3 children set to be executed in Florida Pena recorded videos of their encounters and shared them with the girl through texts. The affidavit said he would also give the student expensive sneakers and apparel. Students reportedly witnessed the inappropriate behavior, including flirting, between Pena and girls at the middle school. According to WBBH, Pena was an assistant basketball coach at Charlotte High School. He was also a former Dominican national basketball player who played in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup. 'Obviously shouldn't be coaching,' Tommy Smith, a former basketball coach of 45 years, told WBBH. 'It's just sad that anyone, not just him, would take advantage of a young kid.' Pena was arrested Tuesday by Punta Gorda police on charges of unlawful sexual activity with certain minors and lewd and lascivious battery on a victim under 16 years old. The news outlet said the school district has put Pena on paid leave. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
