Former major winner Ernie Els is set to host groundbreaking new PGA Tour Champions event in Portugal that has a jaw-dropping $3m prize purse

In a groundbreaking new announcement, four-time major champion Ernie Els is set to host a brand new PGA Tour Champions event, The Portugal Invitational, in 2026. The tournament will mark the first time a PGA Tour-sanctioned individual stroke play event will be hosted in the European country, and will arrive at the South African's newly refurbished Els Club during the week of July 27. The Els Club, which is located in Vilamoura, is set to welcome a field of 78 players, including World Golf Hall of Fame stars and PGA Champions Tour members. Through the Tour's strategic alliance with the DP World Tour, members from the Legends Tour will also be invited to participate. They will all compete for a jaw-dropping prize purse of £2.23million ($3m) across this stunning track, with golfing legends Bernhard Langer and Miguel Ángel Jimenez both speaking of their excitement at the news. All three rounds of the event will be televised on the GOLF Channel, with the Portugal Invitational set to be sandwiched between the ISPS Handa Senior Open and the Staysure Senior PGA Championship on the Legends Tour, culminating in what is set to be a simply outstanding showing of golf in Europe. The PGA Tour Champions, Arrow Global Group and Turismo de Portugal de Algarve have joined forces to bring this event to European shores, with the group announcing a five-year strategic partnership to host Tour Champions events in Portugal. 'We are thrilled to partner with Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, Turismo de Algarve and Ernie Els to announce this exciting, first-of-its-kind PGA TOUR Champions event in Portugal,' PGA TOUR Champions President, Miller Brady, said. 'This Tour is a global showcase of the game's legendary players, and we know the great golf fans in Portugal and throughout Europe will welcome the opportunity to watch them compete in person at The Els Club Vilamoura.' Portugal is one of the greatest places to play golf in Europe, but at present, only the Hotel Planner Tour will visit the European country in 2025, for the Open de Portugal at the Royal Obidos Spa and Golf Resort, in Vau Obidos. Els, who won The Open in 1994 and 1997 and the US Open in 2002 and 2012, is currently leading some exciting and innovative renovation works on the course, which was formerly known as the Victoria Course. This illustrious track had previously hosted the Portugal Masters between 2007 and 2022. Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood and Shane Lowry have won at this venue in the past. The South African, who has led renovation works at some of the world's most iconic golf courses, including Wentworth's West Course, spoke of his excitement over the renovations, with the Els Club in Vilamoura set to open in 2025. 'Whenever our firm designs a golf course, we always have an eye on what makes it a successful tournament venue, so this was always a big part of our plans for The Els Club Vilamoura,' Els said, speaking on the huge announcement. 'It's wonderful to see those plans now coming to fruition and we're grateful to PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady, the team at Arrow Global Group and Turismo de Portugal and Turismo de Algarve, for sharing in our vision and bringing this exciting new tournament here. 'Working with Arrow Global and everyone at Vilamoura has been an absolute pleasure these past few years; they had a clear vision and mission from the get-go, which allowed us to focus our efforts on creating the very best golf course that we could. We're very proud of this course; it looks incredible. 'There are a lot of great holes, a lot of memorable holes, and overall, it's a really well-balanced test of golf. The practice facilities here are world-class, too. Everything about The Els Club Vilamoura makes it the ideal tournament venue. The players are going to love it, not just the golf course but this whole destination. It's such a beautiful part of the world.' The Algarve is one of the most famous destinations in the world for golf, with approximately 1.5billion rounds played annually. And according to John Calvao, Fund Principal at Arrow Global Group, the addition of the Portugal Invitational to the PGA Tour Champions Schedule signifies a huge leap in bringing some of the greatest players of the game to Portugal's shores. 'This announcement signifies the convergence of several heavyweights in the game of golf; the renowned golf destination of the Algarve, the might of Ernie Els' design, and the legendary golfers who will compete on these fairways,' Calvao said. 'For Arrow Global, this is a major step in realizing our vision for Portugal as one of the best global golf and lifestyle destinations, and we believe this tournament will showcase the world-class quality of the course and the strength of our long-term commitment to the region.' Aside from upgrades to the golf course, Arrow Global Group are investing in Vilamoura as a region, adding multiple hotels while also announcing their intention to build a beach club. 'We've made a significant investment in the destination, elevating it with world-class hotels, a completely renovated marina, upgraded golf courses, and a high-end equestrian center. We're also further developing high-quality real estate that reflects the lifestyle our guests and residents seek. Soon, we'll be adding a country club and a beach club, making this a destination that truly has everything for families and all generations to enjoy.' Andre Gomes, President of the Algarve Tourism Board noted the significance of this announcement. 'Hosting the Portugal Invitational in Vilamoura is a historic milestone for the Algarve and for Portugal. This partnership with PGA TOUR Champions further raises our destination's international profile and confirms the Algarve as an essential reference point in European golf,' Gomes said. 'The Els Club Vilamoura, now the venue for an event of this magnitude, reflects our commitment to combining quality, sustainability and reputation with a distinctive tourist offering capable of attracting elite competitions. 'The Algarve has been Portugal's leading golf destination for decades, with around 1.5 million rounds played annually, and continues to invest in a diverse, contemporary and environmentally responsible offering. This tournament raises the bar and reflects the regional ambition to establish the Algarve as a year-round tourist destination, with a direct impact on the economy, employment and promotion of the region. We are ready to welcome the big names in golf history and show the world everything the Algarve has to offer — on and off the course.'

Padraig Harrington bounces back from lost ball row to claim second US Senior Open title by one shot

A week that started with a surreal row over a lost ball ended with Padraig Harrington becoming a multiple major champion on golf's over-50s circuit. By winning the US Senior Open for a second time on Sunday evening, the 53-year-old is now two-thirds of the way to replicating the haul he achieved in his prime. As with his 2007 victory at The Open, this triumph came at the expense of Stewart Cink, whom he beat by a stroke at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs Cink had led by one leaving the 10th green, but his bogey at the next dovetailed with Harrington's birdie for a two-shot swing and the Irishman was flawless over the final seven holes on his way to a 67. At 11 under par for the tournament, he won back the title he lifted in 2022 and an $800,000 payday, with former Ryder Cup team-mate Miguel Angel Jimenez in third. It was a perfect end to a week that began in a fraught manner, when Harrington lost a ball off the tee in the first round and was subsequently filmed in a tense conversation with NBC's Roger Maltbie. Harrington was unimpressed that the former pro had not helped him search in the trees. At 11 under par for the tournament, the 53-year-old won back the title he lifted in 2022 Harrington was heard accusing Maltbie of a breach of etiquette, saying: 'You've played golf all your life. You understand. You don't stand looking at somebody looking for a golf ball.' On Sunday, Maltbie clarified his position to 'I've never had a cross word with Padraig. I've been a Padraig fan all these years. Anyway, I tried to explain to him, 'Padraig, my producer had told me to stand by'. They were going to come to me for a report. I could not do it, searching for your ball inside those trees. So I did not go in. 'Every time I tried to explain to him, he said, 'It's poor etiquette. It's golf etiquette to help somebody in search for a ball', and that I should know better after the years of playing. 'I tried to say, 'Listen, I have a boss'. I'm not a player, and if I were a spectator or certainly playing with him, I would have helped him search for his ball. But I was under instructions. It just wouldn't work. But he wanted no part of it. 'I was very close to saying, 'All these years, all these checks I've gotten from NBC, your name isn't on any of them'. I mean, his caddie works for him, so I'm sure his caddie does what Padraig tells him to do. Well, I have an employer, and if they tell me basically what I'm going to do or what they want from me, I have to honour that. But he just doesn't see it that way.'

Padraig Harrington outlasts Stewart Cink and Miguel Angel Jimenez to win U.S. Senior Open

A three-way tie for the 54-hole lead became a three-horse race Sunday at the 2025 U.S. Senior Open. It just wasn't the same three golfers. In the end, it was Padraig Harrington winning the event for a second time in front large galleries at the Broadmoor's East Course in Colorado Springs. Harrington, Stewart Cink and Mark Hensby were all at 8 under after three rounds at the fourth of five majors on the PGA Tour Champions. Late in the back nine Sunday, Cink and Harrington were joined in the pursuit by Miguel Angel Jimenez, where they moved up final round tee times by two hours because of inclement weather expected Sunday afternoon. Advertisement Harrington made birdies on three of his first five holes. He later answered bogeys on 7 and 10 with birdies on 9 and 11. Meanwhile, Cink poured in four straight birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to get to 11 under but a bogey on the 11th dropped him to 10 under, a shot back of Harrington, as the duo traded the lead five times on the front nine. Jimenez made things interesting after he went 6 under through his first 14 holes to get 9 under. Jimenez already has one major win, the Kaulig Companies Championship, this season, and made another birdie on No. 16 to get to double digits under par. While Jimenez was the first to post a score, signing for a final-round 64 to get to 9 under, he did take a bogey on the last hole with Cink was at 10 under and Harrington at 11 under at that time. Moments later, Cink missed a chance to tie for the lead, pushing a six-footer to the right, so he stayed at 10 under with a hole to go. Padraig Harrington hits a tee shot on the sixth hole during the final round of the 2025 U.S. Senior Open at Broadmoor Golf Club. On 18, Harrington, with a one-shot lead, stuffed his approach to give him a birdie look. Cink then hit wedge into the green and after initially looking to be just outside Harrington's ball, it spun away from the hole. Advertisement Cink would putt first, from about 30 feet away and he left it a foot outside. After Hensby putted, Harrington needed just two putts from eight feet for the win and he did just that, finally tapping in for his second U.S. Senior Open. At US Senior Open, Harrington hangs on, wins head-to-head showdown with Cink

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Padraig Harrington came out on top of a major championship that felt more like match play, closing his round Sunday with seven straight pars at the U.S. Senior Open to top Stewart Cink by one shot. Playing alongside Cink for the fourth straight day, Harrington shot 3-under 67 to finish at 11-under 269 on the tricky, heavily sloping Broadmoor. The Irishman sealed this match by hitting his approach to 8 feet on No. 18, putting pressure on Cink, who trailed by one but sat 30 yards in front of him on the fairway. Cink's approach landed on the precipice of a ledge, but spun backward and didn't come to rest until it was 35 feet away to set up a two-putt. That made it advantage Harrington, who also two-putted to seal the win, though the last laugh went to the Broadmoor. Minutes earlier, Cink had looks inside of 6 feet to tie on Nos. 16 and 17. The one on 16 slid to the left, the one on 17 burned the edge and stayed right. Cink, who hit more greens over 72 holes than anyone (64), but downplayed the importance of that on this course, turned out to be right. It really is the putter that matters. Cink needed two more than Harrington on the fourth day of their showdown — the difference between winning and losing. Harrington won his second U.S. Open title in four years, adding that to a trophy case that also includes the 2007 and '08 British Opens and the 2008 PGA. The only player who threatened to get in the mix in this two-man show was Miguel Angel Jimenez. After opening with bogey, Jimenez made eight bridies to pull within a shot of the lead. But he yanked his tee shot well left on No. 18, had to punch out and made bogey. He still shot the best round of the tournament, a 6-under 64, and finished in third, two shots back. The other player in the Cink-Harrington group — players teed off in threesomes to beat the weather — was Mark Hensby. Celebrating his 54th birthday, Hensby couldn't conjure any of the magic that led to 19 birdies over the first three days and a share of the lead. He only made two Sunday and shot 3-over 73 to tie for fourth at 5 under with Thomas Bjorn. Harrington's signature shot was his last birdie of the day — a 12-footer on the par-4 11th that put him at 11 under. It was a straight-in look, one of the very few anyone gets on this golf course. But really, it might have come less than 24 hours earlier when he chipped in from 20 yards off the green for a birdie that tied him with Cink heading into the final day, setting them up with the same tee time for the fourth straight time and setting up a match-play scene that came down to the final shot. ___
