Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson cleared to reopen

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The State Fire Marshal's Office said Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson has met the standards to reopen. According to State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney (R-Miss.), a follow-up inspection was conducted on June 3. Mayor-elect John Horhn discusses plans for capital city 'A Certificate of Occupancy will be issued to the City of Jackson (COJ). A hydrostatic test was conducted on Monday, June 2, 2025, to determine the integrity of pipes and valves in the building. The test was successful. The building elevators and escalators remain out of service pending repair and inspection. The COJ has scheduled a new fire curtain to be installed in July,' said Chaney. He said a condition of the reopening is that a third-party fire watch must be in place until the fire curtain is installed and passes inspection. A fire watch involves having someone monitor the building during events for fire hazards and to alert occupants and emergency services if a fire breaks out. WJTV 12 News reached out to the City of Jackson about Thalia Mara Hall. Officials said a date has not been set for the reopening of the facility. Thalia Mara Hall closed in August 2024 after mold and other safety issues were discovered. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Mississippi homeowners advised to mitigate wildfire risks

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi is not immune to wildfires. In their wake, wildfires can cause erosion and loss of vegetation, which could lead to problems like flooding. Homeowners can reduce their wildfire and flooding risks by retrofitting their homes, clearing debris from their properties, and creating defensible spaces. Mississippi reports increase in whooping cough cases The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) recommends these steps to create a defensible space around your home: Install hard surfaces close to your home, such as a concrete walkway or rock mulch. Regularly water your lawn and plants to prevent dry vegetation. Remove dead plants and tree branches and trim low-hanging tree branches. Find more tips here, 'Homeowners policies usually cover the repair or replacement of the built structure of your home and items damaged by flames, smoke, soot, and ash. However, you should check with your insurance agent to ensure your policy covers wildfires and whether there is a separate wildfire deductible,' said Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney (R-Miss.). 'Homeowners insurance is not designed to cover damages to your car. A comprehensive car insurance policy may insure a car against fire damage. Check with your agent to find out what your policy covers.' If your property is damaged by fire, your insurance company may ask for an inventory of the items in your home at the time of the loss. Use the NAIC's Home Inventory App as a way to prepare. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. More than 1 million Mississippi properties lack flood insurance

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Governor Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) declared March 16-22, 2025, as Flood Insurance Awareness Week in Mississippi. According to the Mississippi Insurance Department (MID), more than 1 million properties in the state are not covered by flood insurance. 'Mississippi has experienced significant flooding in recent years, causing hardship and financial loss to homeowners and business owners,' said Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney. 'It's estimated that even a few inches of rain in a small home could cost more than $10,000 in repairs. At last check, there were nearly 53,000 National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policies in force in Mississippi.' Homeowners can buy flood insurance through the NFIP or through private insurance. Homeowner's policies do not cover flooding. It typically takes 30 days for a flood policy to go into effect. Volunteers unite to aid Mississippi tornado victims Other tips to prepare for flooding now: Sign up for your community warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts. Learn and practice evacuation routes and shelter plans. Keep important documents in a waterproof container. Make digital copies of those documents to upload and protect them with a password. Designate someone out of state to be your family contact in the event of an emergency. Make sure everyone knows the contact's address and phone number. Gather supplies you might need if you have to leave home quickly. Keep in mind, you may need medication, pet food and crates, and extra batteries and chargers for mobile phones. After a flood: Listen to authorities for information and return home only when authorities say it's safe. Avoid driving, except in emergencies. Snakes and other animals may have come into your home or business during the flood. Wear gloves and boots during cleanup. Don't touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you're in standing water. If it's safe, turn off the electricity to prevent electric shock. Avoid wading in floodwater as it could be contaminated. Only use a generator outdoors and away from windows. File a flood insurance claim as soon as possible. Call 1‐800‐621‐3362 for further assistance or Register for FEMA Flood Disaster Assistance. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. $37 million in life insurance benefits found for Mississippians

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – According to the Mississippi Insurance Department (MID), nearly 1,700 Mississippians used the Life Insurance Policy Locator to find lost life insurance policies valued at more than $37 million in 2024. Since it's inception in 2016, the program has found more than $135 million for Mississippians. Mississippi Lottery makes January 2025 transfer to state 'Life insurance protects your family financially. What better way to show someone you love them than by thinking of their future,' said Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney (R-Miss.). 'Valentine's Day is a good reminder to consider purchasing life insurance. Talk to your insurance agent about your options. Once you've bought life insurance, keep a copy of the policy somewhere your family will know to find it.' Each year, Chaney said millions of dollars in life insurance benefits go unclaimed by beneficiaries who can't find their loved ones' policies or in some cases may not even know the policies exist. That's where the Life Insurance Policy Locator comes in. If you need additional assistance in locating a lost policy, you can contact the MID at 601-359-2453 or email consumer@ Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox.
