Chelsea files: Key date edges closer in Mike Maignan transfer saga as Gianluigi Donnarumma deal is all but ruled out

With Marcus Bettinelli and Djordje Petrovic leaving the club, Enzo Maresca's 'keeper line-up for next season looks like Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen and young American Gabriel Slonina, in that order. Rumours of Chelsea having another go at signing AC Milan's Mike Maignan have not gone away. Stats gurus say the France international would be the perfect fit for the Blues, because he is excellent with his feet as well as top class in most other aspects of goalkeeping. Meanwhile, big clubs around the world are aware that Gianluigi Donnarumma has not signed a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain and the European champions are poised to bring in Lucas Chevalier from Lille. READ MORE CHELSEA NEWS NIC OF TIME Ripped Jackson plays beach football and rides jet ski amid Man Utd move rumours Chelsea, Manchester United and Galatasaray could also be interested in a new 'keeper, leading some observers to put two and two together. But in the Blues' case, the answer is probably five. Aside from the biggish transfer fee that PSG would want, Donnarumma's £300,000-per-week wages just would not fit into the Chelsea owners' blueprint. Deals to bring in defender Jorrel Hato and attacking midfielder Xavi Simons will go through sooner or later. But the big question is whether Maresca and the Blues are willing to put their faith in Sanchez for another season. The August 10 friendly against AC will give the people who matter the chance to have another chat about him. BLUE HORIZONS CHELSEA'S fire sale continues to gather pace, but some moves will be more complicated than others. Drake hints Cole Palmer is inspiration behind his new album name as he shares brilliant video of Chelsea star Joao Felix is making a swift exit to Saudi Arabia while Djorde Petrovic has joined Bournemouth. Other deals are proving more challenging. Carney Chukwuemeka, the midfielder signed from Aston Villa in a £20million deal two years ago, spent last season on loan with Borussia Dortmund. And he has his heart set on going back to join the German side. 11 Joao Felix is set for an exit from Stamford Bridge Credit: Getty 11 Carney Chukwuemeka could also be on his way out Credit: Getty Chelsea have been holding out for up to £40m for the 21-year-old, who has also attracted interest from RB Leipzig. Chukwuemeka is clear that he only wants a move back to Dortmund, but they are only considering a loan at this stage - something which is not as attractive to Chelsea. This has resulted in somewhat of an impasse in talks, something which looks like it could take a while to get past. Someone is going to have to budge. BLUE IT THERE was excitement among Chelsea fans - and supporters of other clubs were furious - when reports went round of the club's owners investing another £339m. But what sounded like a substantial transfer warchest was in fact another bit of sensible accountancy. For a start the actual figure Stamford Bridge chiefs put into the club by means of the June 30 share issue was just over £339,000. In layman's terms, millions of new shares in Chelsea FC Holdings were created and bought by Blueco 22 Midco, one of the firms through which the owners control the club. 11 Todd Boehly has headed up Chelsea since May 2022 Credit: Alamy Why? 339k does not get you much in football these days. But the date of the transaction is significant - the final day of the Blues' financial year. Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules allow clubs to lose an average of £35m per season or a maximum of £105m over each three-season reporting period. But that limit is only £5m per season (£15m in total) unless owners put new money in the form of equity (not loans) into the club every year. Chelsea bosses did the same thing on June 29 2024, just before the end of that financial reporting period. So this year's share issue wasn't to fund the big spending of the summer. It was simply to give Chelsea the biggest amount of leeway possible for PSR purposes, which they are likely to need BECAUSE of the outlay on transfers. BLUE SKIES CHELSEA stars have flooded social media with photos from their glamorous vacations. Player of the season Moises Caicedo picked up another award while back in his native Ecuador. The country's parliament presented Caicedo with the Vicente Rocafuerte medal, the highest civilian honour for sporting excellence, in recognition for his role in Chelsea's Club World Cup win. But the most heartwarming snaps came from club captain Reece James. 11 Moises Caicedo has been taking a break back in Ecuador Credit: INSTAGRAM 11 He has been making the most of his vacation Credit: INSTAGRAM 11 Reece James flew out to watch sister Lauren win the Euros Earlier in the weekend, James posted footage of him out and about in Basel. And on Sunday, the man who lifted the CWC trophy was celebrating as sister Lauren, one of six members of the Chelsea women's team in the England squad, became a European champion. TICKET WOES SOME Chelsea fans have been left furious at the club's new ticketing system, with many unable even to get close to attending the first game of the season vs Crystal Palace. The new system, in partnership with Ticketmaster, has been controversial since its introduction, but has now left fans wishing they could get a refund for the £60 'premium' membership they bought before the season began. True Blue member Aadam told the Chelsea Files: 'The new Chelsea ticketing system is a joke. 'I had 136 points last season, went to loads of games including the final in Poland, but didn't even get a shot at a Palace ticket. 11 Chelsea fans fuming about the club's ticketing system Credit: Getty 'At least with the old system, there was a chance, and now even my mate with a season ticket can't help out on the new system. 'Total shambles and I wish I could get a refund for my £60 membership!' But other supporters said they liked the new system, which puts all members trying to buy tickets into a queue and gives them a number in that queue that gives a good indication of their chances of getting anything. The process favours the more casual fan who can't afford to attend every home game but wants the opportunity to buy a few tickets per season. But the queue of 10s of thousands trying to buy a ticket for the Palace game underlines the wider issue: Chelsea badly need a bigger stadium, and the sooner the better. BADGE SHORTAGE MORE frustration for supporters came in the Chelsea Megastore. On Monday, some fans turned up at the Stamford Bridge shop hoping to buy the Club World Cup Winners patch for their shirts. But the item was sold out. Hopefully, the Blues have enough of them to make sure the men's first team can at least wear them with pride. 11 Chelsea will have a special badge on their shirt for winning the Club World Cup Credit: Getty The Under-21 side who donned the new kit for the friendly at Bromley did not have the patch on their shirts. It is unclear whether Enzo Maresca's senior team will have the badge of honour for the friendlies against Bayer Levekusen and AC Milan, or wait until the first Premier League game against Crystal Palace.

Italian powerhouses return to Perth for pre-season clash

Perth is turning red and black as European soccer giants AC Milan are making their presence felt ahead of their second game in WA in as many years. The Italian powerhouse have landed in WA off the back of two high-profile pre-season clashes with Arsenal and Liverpool in Asia, and will face Perth Glory on Thursday night at HBF Park. It follows on from Milan's previous trip to Perth, which saw them face fellow Italian side AS Roma in front of more than 56,000 people at Optus Stadium last May. The Italians have brought several star names down under, including American ace Christian Pulisic, talismanic Portugese forward Rafael Leao and internationally-capped Englishmen Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. With Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti spruiking Thursday's match against the Glory as a near sell-out, coach Massimiliano Allegri and captain Mike Maignan spoke of their excitement at finishing off their Asia-Pacific tour in style. Credit: Kelsey Reid / The West Australian Allegri, said he had appreciated the warm reception from fans in WA, who lined the Crown Towers lobby on Sunday night to greet the club upon arrival. 'I'm honored to represent AC Milan for the first time in Western Australia and in Australia generally,' Allegri said via an interpreter. 'I recognise the huge following that AC Milan has across this country, and I'm looking forward to not only the game on Thursday night, but everything that surrounds it.' Maignan, who has established himself as the French international team's no.1 goalkeeper, said through an interpreter he was looking forward to playing the Glory. 'I'm very honoured to lead my team into Perth and Western Australia. I'm very proud of his club, and I'm looking forward to showing not only what Italian football is on the park, but the culture and everything else that's around AC Milan,' he said. Players from the club also visited Perth Children's Hospital on Monday to greet young fans.

Chelsea handed major transfer boost as PSG 'looking to sell' Gianluigi Donnarumma

Chelsea are still in the market for a goalkeeper after failing to sign Mike Maignan and Gianluigi Donnarumma has become available amid his uncertain future at Paris Saint-Germain Chelsea have been handed the chance to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma after he failed to agree a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain. Donnarumma, 26, has entered the final year of his current deal and PSG want to avoid losing him for nothing next summer - as they did with Kylian Mbappe in 2024. ‌ The Italian goalkeeper is fresh off helping Luis Enrique's men reach the Club World Cup final. Donnarumma's performances in the knockout phase of the Champions League were also crucial in helping PSG lift first ever European Cup. ‌ But in a stunning development, L'Equipe report that Parc des Princes chiefs are now looking to sell him this summer. It comes after the 26-year-old refused to sign a new contract. ‌ PSG are wary of history repeating itself after the Mbappe debacle, so they'll listen to offers. That's opened the door for Chelsea, who are said to be interested in Donnarumma. The Blues came close to signing AC Milan's Mike Maignan in June. Enzo Maresca's side were in talks prior to the Club World Cup but walked away from negotiations after being put off by Milan's £25m asking price. Donnarumma could therefore be the answer to Chelsea's long-running problem in goal. Robert Sanchez hasn't convinced fans, although he did earn plaudits for his displays at the Club World Cup. PSG are reportedly already looking at replacements for Donnarumma, with Lille's Lucas Chevalier and Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa on their shortlist. It's claimed that Turkish giants Galatasaray have already made a bid for Donnarumma, who's also been the subject of interest from Manchester United. Napoli were also linked with Donnarumma but his agent, Enzo Raiola - cousin of the late super agent, Mino - dismissed the speculation, insisting that his focus was on contract talks with PSG. "It's pure fantasy. I've an excellent relationship with Director Giovanni Manna at [Napoli], but we've never discussed Gigio," Raiola told Radio CRC via Calciomercato. ‌ "It's an obvious question; many would like him, but only a few can afford him. He feels good in Paris, we're at the European champion club, so we have no complaints. We are working on a renewal [with PSG]." The situation appears to have changed, though, and the Italy international could be on his way out of Paris. Donnaruma is understand to earn roughly £200,000 per week at PSG. Hong Kong Football Festival: record crowd brings Kai Tak Stadium to life amid tourism boom

Nearly 50,000 fans packed into Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday for the first game of the inaugural Hong Kong Football Festival, providing a raucous atmosphere and highlighting what the city's leader had earlier called an energised tourism industry. Advertisement And after days of community events, fan visits and anticipation, the real business got under way, with Liverpool and AC Milan serving up the sort of pre-season clash Hong Kong has been starved of in recent years. A Noah Okafor double, plus goals from Rafael Leao and Ruben Loftus-Cheek earned Milan a 4-2 win in the Standard Chartered Trophy in front of a record 49,704 crowd. For Liverpool, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo briefly gave their supporters something to cheer about. Either side of 90 minutes of action on the pitch, there was the traditional dragon dance before kick-off and fireworks after to celebrate the Italian side's triumph. For Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, the atmosphere would have further cemented his belief in the city's 'growing attractiveness in the international tourism market', even as he vowed to further innovate and make Hong Kong a 'preferred travel destination'. AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan could do nothing about Dominik Szoboszlai's equaliser. Photo: Elson Li Official figures on Saturday outlined just how much of an economic boon Kai Tak Sports Park has been, with the number of visitors to the city up 12 per cent year on year for the first six months of 2025.
