The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, has called for an industry-led nationwide movement to promote energy-efficient cooling solutions, particularly 5-star-rated air conditioners. BEE Secretary Milind Deore has requested air conditioner manufacturers to submit a comprehensive Action Plan Report detailing their strategies for driving adoption of energy-efficient products. The report is expected to cover the following points. Collaboration on a nationwide awareness campaign to promote BEE 5-star-rated ACs, Engagement of brand ambassadors to amplify messaging on responsible cooling, Utilization of digital platforms and social media to educate consumers about the long-term savings and environmental benefits of 5-star ACs and E-commerce and in-store promotions highlighting energy efficiency as a key feature. The BEE Secretary has emphasised the critical role of traders and retailers in ensuring that energy-efficient models are readily available and prominently promoted. BEE called on manufacturers to phase out older, inefficient models that place excessive strain on the power infrastructure. The initiative is particularly crucial for high-demand states in South such as Andhra Pradesh, which is expected to see a peak demand of 12,359 MW and a daily consumption of 217–245 million units between May and October 2025. Recent consumer behavior trends underscore the urgency and potential impact of this initiative. Data indicates a sharp spike in online searches and interest in air conditioners from February to May 2025. Purchase decisions are increasingly influenced by digital media, reviews, and influencer recommendations—making this the ideal window for targeted campaigns. In a parallel appeal, BEE has urged State governments and State Designated Agencies (SDAs) to intensify efforts to promote BEE's 5-star-rated appliances. The Centre has particularly called for heightened awareness in power-intensive urban centers such as Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam coastal belt, Bengaluru, Chennai, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, and pilgrimage hubs like Tirupati and Varanasi. BEE's 5-star rating program has demonstrated substantial results, with energy-efficient ACs capable of achieving up to 60 percent energy savings, directly translating into lower electricity bills for households and reduced peak load on the power grid. As temperatures continue to soar, this campaign presents both a challenge and an opportunity—to meet rising cooling needs while steering India toward a greener, more energy-resilient future.

Use ACs at default setting of 24 degrees: BEE to citizens
Hyderabad: The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a statutory body under the Union Ministry of Power, said it has intensified its energy conservation campaign to promote responsible air conditioner (AC) usage. BEE has called on citizens and commercial establishments across Hyderabad and major towns to maintain air conditioners at a default setting of 24°C. With a population exceeding 90 lakh and a massive residential and commercial consumer base, BEE has identified Hyderabad as one of the key focus cities in the energy-saving drive that promotes energy-efficient cooling to tackle rising temperatures and encourages cost-effective AC usage to benefit both consumers and the environment. Milind Deore, Secretary, BEE, has emphasised on the need for Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO) State designated agency (SDA) to launch a focused awareness campaign targeting homes, offices, malls, hotels, and government buildings in the city. 'Hyderabad's energy consumption pattern also directly impacts national power stability and climate targets. A collective shift to 24°C AC settings could be a game-changer,' Deore said during first-phase of interaction with key SDAs. Directors Abhishek Sharma and Kamran Sheikh were also present. V Aneela, Managing Director of TSREDCO, confirmed that the agency will take up this initiative on a war footing across Hyderabad and Telangana. BEE has urged AC manufacturers to set 24°C as the default factory setting for all new air conditioning units. 'If even 50 per cent of Hyderabad's consumers adopt this practice, we could significantly cut power demand and emissions,' Deore added. BEE has emphasised that the initiative must be aggressively implemented in high-consumption zones such as hotels, IT parks, airports, shopping malls, and public offices. One AC unit running for 8 –10 hours daily can emit nearly 10 kg of CO₂, making efficient usage essential for combating climate change, an official BEE release mentioned. According to BEE estimates, increasing the AC temperature setting by just 1°C can reduce electricity usage by up to six per cent, up to 20 billion units of electricity can be saved annually, financial savings could touch Rs 10,000 crore in the country, and carbon emissions could drop by 8.2 million tonnes per year.

BEE implements two codes for energy efficiency, conservation
Vijayawada: Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) under the Ministry of Power has introduced two codes to increase the usage of energy efficiency electrical appliances and conservation of energy. The BEE is implementing Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC) for commercial buildings and Eco Niwas Samhita (ENS) for residential buildings. In a press release on Sunday, the BEE has said these codes are intended for adoption by State governments and local bodies, ensuring that energy-efficient and climate-resilient infrastructure becomes the new norm across India. In addition, key household appliances such as air-conditioners, ceiling fans, and refrigerators have been brought under the mandatory Standards and Labelling Programme to ensure that only energy-efficient products are used, helping reduce overall electricity consumption. The BEE, spearheading the efforts under the aegis of the Ministry of Power, has initiated several critical programmes across sectors: Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme is one of the important schemes. PAT is targeting energy-intensive industries, this flagship initiative assigns sector-specific energy reduction targets. Industries surpassing their targets are awarded Energy Saving Certificates, which can be traded on power exchanges. Standards and Labelling Programme - Major energy-consuming appliances are rated from 1-star (least efficient) to 5-star (most efficient) under this programme. The star ratings empower consumers to make informed purchasing decisions, thereby driving down electricity consumption at the household and commercial levels. Through ECSBC and ENS, BEE aims to significantly curb the burgeoning energy demand from the building sector. States and urban local bodies have been called upon to adopt and rigorously implement these codes to realize maximum energy savings. During a recent event in Delhi, Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik has emphasised that achieving the 2030 targets will require concerted and sustained efforts by all stakeholders, particularly the State Designated Agencies (SDAs) of state governments, Milind Deore, Secretary, BEE, said. He underscored the need for proactive states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh to lead by example. 'India is committed to reducing the carbon intensity of its economy by 45 percent by 2030 as part of its climate change and energy efficiency objectives. This is a critical juncture for all SDAs to put forth aggressive, state-specific programs focusing on energy conservation across key sectors including domestic/buildings, industry, agriculture, municipal operations, and transport,' said Deore. He further advised that each state should assign sector-specific energy reduction targets, prioritize interventions in the major energy-consuming areas, and track progress rigorously to ensure that the cumulative national target is met on time. Drawing attention to the rapidly expanding residential sector, Deore highlighted that residential buildings account for 24 percent (approximately 375 TWh) of India's total electricity consumption. Alarmingly, energy demand from the residential sector is projected to increase more than eightfold by 2050. Given this trajectory, Deore called for urgent action in integrating energy efficiency measures within the residential construction boom. Widespread adoption of the Eco Niwas Samhita and rigorous compliance with star-rated appliances can significantly mitigate this looming surge in electricity demand. The BEE and Ministry of Power called upon all stakeholders — states, industries, builders, and consumers to join hands in this transformative journey toward a greener, more energy-efficient India.
