Balkan military leaders summit signals calm in a conflict-prone region

ISTANBUL — Amid renewed geopolitical friction in Europe, Balkan military leaders met in Istanbul to reaffirm their cooperation, offering rare show of unity in a region still shadowed by historic tensions. On May 28, Turkey hosted the 18th Balkan Chiefs of Defence (CHODs) Conference in Istanbul. Military leaders from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and Montenegro gathered alongside observers from Slovenia and Croatia. Also in attendance were the chairman of NATO's Military Committee and the deputy commander of NATO's Joint Force Command Naples. At first glance, this might appear as just another high-level military meeting, but both its symbolism and timing are significant. The Balkans — historically one of Europe's most conflict-prone regions — are once again at the geopolitical forefront amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, escalating tensions between NATO and Russia, and evolving U.S. security commitments in Europe. Turkish officials used the platform to present plans for establishing a NATO Centre of Excellence for Countering Unmanned Threats, underscoring growing global concerns over the strategic use of drones and autonomous systems in modern warfare — from the Donbas region to the Red Sea. During the conference, participants reviewed the outcomes of recent multinational military education programs and exercises hosted by Turkey, including Special Forces training and computer-assisted command post drills. Progress since the last summit was assessed through an evaluation of coordination and working group activities, including the endorsement of annual reports and operational results from joint exercises. Attendees reaffirmed their shared commitment to deepening military ties, broadening existing cooperation, and exploring new avenues for collaboration. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz also delivered a speech at the conference. In the Balkans, nationalist tensions can smolder for years and quickly spiral out of control. The ability of countries with long-standing disputes to sit at the same conference table is crucial for preventing miscommunication and fostering predictability among neighbors. Among the participants, Bosnia-Herzegovina, a member of NATO's Partnership for Peace program, and Serbia — the only non-NATO country — stood out. Serbia, which traditionally maintains close ties with Russia, was bombed by NATO members a little more than a quarter-century ago. The presence of senior NATO commanders sent a clear message of commitment to maintaining military dialogue despite deep-rooted historical and political divisions. Officials confirmed that Greece will host the 19th Balkan CHODs Conference in 2026, continuing the tradition of rotating venues to encourage inclusivity and shared responsibility for regional security. To close the event, Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Metin Gürak, along with NATO and Balkan military leaders, visited the Baykar Özdemir Bayraktar National Technology Center — showcasing Turkey's growing defense-industrial ambitions and its leadership role in the region.

Inauguration of Traffic Movement on Sana'a–Dhalea–Aden Road

Dhalea – SABA: The Acting Governor of Dhalea, Abdul Latif Al-Shaghdari, the Military Committee, and the Chairman of the Board of the Yemeni News Agency SABA, Nasr Al-Din Amer, officially inaugurated today the traffic movement on the Sana'a–Aden road via Dhalea, after a closure that lasted seven years. During the inauguration, the Acting Governor emphasized the commitment to ensuring the movement of travelers and various goods along the Sana'a–Dhalea–Aden route. He pointed out that the road has been open through Dhalea for over a year following the directives of the Leader of the Revolution, Sayyed Abdulmalik Badr Al-Din Al-Houthi, and the political and military leadership. He confirmed that today's crossing of vehicles and transport trucks crowns the leadership's initiative to reopen this vital route. Al-Shaghdari noted that the Dhalea road connecting Sana'a and Aden is the shortest and easiest path, relieving travelers from the suffering they endured during the road's closure. He said, 'We are pleased to see citizens passing through the road that we reopened from our side last year,' noting that security arrangements have been put in place to ensure the safety of citizens. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board of the Yemeni News Agency SABA stated that the inauguration of traffic movement on the Sana'a–Aden road through Dhalea by the local authority, the military committee, and the military region comes in implementation of the leadership's directives following the other party's approval to open the road from its side. He said, 'This initiative was previously launched from this location over a year ago, but the committee assigned to open the road was fired upon at the time. Now that the other party has responded to the initiative, we welcome it.' He affirmed the positive interaction with the inauguration of vehicle movement from Sana'a to Aden via Dhalea without obstacles, even though the road had been open from their side. However, the other party had not responded and there were some obstacles that have now been removed. Amer stressed the importance of the other party removing any remaining barriers so that the road becomes fully functional and suitable for the passage of all types of vehicles, ensuring easier travel for citizens. He added that reopening the road contributes to strengthening communication among the Yemeni people, and also sends a message that Yemenis should not fear each other, for they are compassionate among themselves and harsh against the Americans, Zionists, and the infidel West. For his part, Deputy Head of the Committee, Brigadier General Hussein Dhaif Allah, explained that the leadership's initiative to open the road about a year ago reflects a genuine concern for alleviating the suffering of citizens. He noted that the inauguration of traffic for citizens' vehicles is the culmination of this leadership initiative and the efforts made in this regard. He extended his congratulations to the stationed forces in the Dhalea front line on the upcoming Eid al-Adha, praising their high readiness and willingness to carry out any assigned tasks. Citizens expressed their gratitude to the revolutionary and political leadership and the local authority for their efforts in maintaining the road and removing obstacles. The inauguration was attended by Dhalea's Deputy Governors Hussein Al-Madhaji and Sadiq Al-Idrisi, the Governorate's Police Director Hussein Al-Hamzi, along with security and military leaders and social figures from Damt and Maris.
