Doctor Who: The Reality War – season two finale and Ncuti Gatwa era recap

And just like that, he was gone, and the Ncuti Gatwa era is over. It was the shortest tenure in the role since Christopher Eccleston did just one series in 2005, and even within his brief run there was more than one episode where Gatwa barely featured. But without doubt the first Black actor to lead the show left his mark on the role – an incarnation with a winning smile, the catchphrase 'babes', relentless enthusiasm, and without the emotional baggage that was increasingly weighing down his predecessors. He departed with joy. With episodes like this, it is very much about enjoying the ride as it rushes from scene to scene, without worrying too much about whether the actual plot makes sense. That may not be the kind of Doctor Who everybody wants. The scene between Gatwa and the returning Jodie Whittaker was beautifully played. The lines about the 13th Doctor never telling Yaz she loved her were perfectly pitched by Russell T Davies to give closure to the awkward non-committal scenes we saw between Whittaker and Mandip Gill in The Power of the Doctor from the pen of Chris Chibnall. Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday again shone in scenes where she was the protagonist rather than the sidekick. Her decision, after everything he had done, to choose the kindness of wishing Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King) happiness, rather than vengeance, was one of the most Doctor Who things ever. Archie Panjabi's take on the Rani, unhinged by the destruction of Gallifrey and the sterility of the Time Lords and unrequited in her feelings for the Doctor was exquisite, and Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood was always a tremendous presence on screen. But if we are talking about unrequited feelings, the surprise return of Steph de Whalley as Anita quickly turned from happiness to see her to experiencing her sadness as we saw her watch the Doctor and Rogue (Jonathan Groff) dancing in the past, and realise that Gatwa was never going to be her man. And so, at the end, a season that gave us both Dugga Doo and Mr Ring-a-Ding finished with Billie Piper saying 'Oh, hello!'. What a wild nonsensical ride it has been. What if Doctor Who did the weirdest thing it could possibly do and appear to cast a former companion as the lead? Belinda (Varada Sethu) was thankfully back to the spikier version of her that we first met in The Robot Revolution and Lux, rather than the bland version that appeared in the mid-season episodes, but it appears she has departed the show along with Gatwa. It would have been nice to have more of her. The battle scene which pitted the Avengers tower from Marvel against bone dinosaurs pretending to be At-Ats from Star Wars was hilarious, but in this episode it was really only the brief CGI appearance of Omega that was an alien big bad. If the fear last week was the fear of otherness in a dystopian world, the fear here was that of losing a child – or wanting one but never getting the chance. A very human fear that might hit very differently depending on your own personal circumstances. Probably the biggest mystery is that having introduced a cameo of Carole Ann Ford as the Doctor's granddaughter Susan two episodes ago, and this episode revolving around whether Poppy was the Doctor's daughter, that the two were not tied together. It was also surely deliberate that the end credits very clearly said 'Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor. And introducing Billie Piper' but did not specify who it was introducing her as. And Anita mentioned 'the boss', a reference back to a set-up by the Meep way back in 2023's 60th anniversary special The Star Beast, a story that now appears to be two Doctors ago. Gatwa's decision to pronounce Omega differently to everybody around him will surely go down in Doctor Who lore along with Matt Smith's mispronounced Metebelis III during Hide. Anita opening time doors left, right and centre looking for the Doctor in his past suggests that perhaps in every episode since 1974 some combination of her, Clara's impossible girl, and Sutekh clinging to the Tardis have all been present. It is getting a bit crowded in the past. I forgot to mention last week that the inclusion of a clip of Kate O'Mara playing the Rani in a flashback sequence lifted from 1993 Comic Relief EastEnders crossover episode Dimensions in Time finally makes it officially canon. The War Between the Land and the Sea – featuring Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave and Ruth Madeley among others – sees Unit face off against the sea devils, and is expected to be broadcast later this year. With no confirmed news on the future of Doctor Who, there was a chance this may be the last episode-by-episode recap for some time, or possibly ever? But Billie Piper's appearance didn't feel like the end of the series, did it? Either way, I'd like to sign off by thanking all the production staff and comment moderation team that help the recaps happen, the people at the BBC who arrange early access to the episodes and invitations to screenings, you below the line for all your incisive and entertaining comments over the years, and of course, thanks to the much-loved and much-missed Dan Martin, who got the ball rolling 15 years ago with his recap blog of Matt Smith debut The Eleventh Hour. Doctor Who fans left reeling after season finale full of surprises

Ncuti Gatwa has left Doctor Who after two seasons, with Billie Piper seemingly replacing him in the season finale, drawing mixed reactions from fans. Billie Piper, who originally played Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, expressed her excitement about returning to the Whoniverse. The season finale featured the Doctor facing The Rani and saving a little girl, with a cameo from Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor appeared to travel through alternate universes. Fans had mixed reactions to the finale, with some praising the appearances of Piper and Whittaker, while others criticised the plot and writing, calling it "EastEnders in space." Russell T Davies, Doctor Who showrunner, thanked Ncuti Gatwa and welcomed Billie Piper back, hinting at a new story to be told, while Millie Gibson, who plays Ruby Sunday, praised Gatwa's portrayal of the Doctor.

Why Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor fell shot... but being woke wasn't the issue

Mixed, would be the verdict. It always felt that Gatwa's performance was a little held back by the writing. That while he could brim with charisma and charm and proper sex appeal – as in last season's Rogue – he was just a tad too reserved, as contradictory as that sounds. It was a brave move to have Gatwa's Doctor such a study in trauma. This was a character who would shed tears over minor characters dying, who would swallow down on his own feelings rather than tell them to even his assistants, who was on the run from the past but was so haunted by it, he was often reduced to walking. In some of those early episodes last year, it was Millie Gibson's Ruby who was the active one, seen dragging a scared Doctor behind her in The Devil's Chord.

Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa says final farewell to the TARDIS as the Fifteenth Doctor regenerates

In Doctor Who season 2 finale The Reality War viewers saw Ncuti Gatwa's final scenes as the Doctor as he steps down from one of the most iconic roles in British television. In an epic two-part season finale, viewers saw the Doctor face the Rani in an extraordinary battle to save the world and the Doctor made the ultimate sacrifice to save the life of one little girl. Watch Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer and add to your Watchlist Since being announced as the Doctor in May 2022, Ncuti Gatwa was launched into the Whoniverse and immediately taken into the hearts of Doctor Who fans across the globe. With his first appearance being part of the show's 60th anniversary celebrations in November 2023, Gatwa's arrival into the show was a never seen before bi-generation which saw him split from the Fourteenth Doctor, played by David Tennant. His portrayal of the Doctor won Gatwa a Best Actor award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards in 2024, as well as nominations for a BAFTA Scotland Audience Award for Favourite Scot on Screen, and Best Actor in a Drama Series at The Critics Choice Television Awards in the US in 2025. Gatwa's first full episode, The Church on Ruby Road saw the Doctor team up with companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, and the two travelled on out of this world adventures, with episodes including The Devil's Chord, Rogue and Boom with Gatwa winning praise globally for his iteration of the iconic character. In season two, Gatwa gained another companion, Belinda Chandra, played by Varada Sethu and the stakes got higher, with battles bigger than ever before with the duo going back in time to Miami in Lux, travelling to Lagos in The Story & the Engine as well as attending the 803rd Interstellar Song Contest before facing the Rani and Omega in his final battle to save earth before regenerating once more. Speaking of his decision to leave, Ncuti said: 'You know when you get cast, at some point you are going to have to hand back that sonic screwdriver and it is all going to come to an end, but nothing quite prepares you for it. This journey has been one that I will never forget, and a role that will be part of me forever. There are no words to describe what it feels like to be cast as the Doctor, nor are there words to explain what it feels like to be accepted into this iconic role that has existed for over 60 years and is truly loved by so many across the globe. "The fans are truly the final character and beating heart of this show and I can't thank the Whoniverse, and the Whovians, enough for welcoming me in, and making this such a touching experience. I've loved every minute of it, but now is the time to hand over the keys to that beloved blue box and let someone else take control and enjoy it every bit as much as I have. I'll truly miss it, and forever be grateful to it, and everyone that has played a part in my journey as the Doctor.' Speaking of Ncuti's departure, Russell T Davies, Showrunner said: "What a Doctor! Thank you, Ncuti! As his final words say, this has been an absolute joy, and the team in Cardiff and everyone who has worked on this show for the past few years, are so lucky to have been part of Ncuti's great adventure as he shoots off to stratospheric new heights." Lindsay Salt, Director of Drama added: 'When Ncuti Gatwa first stepped foot on the TARDIS we instantly knew he was going to be an iconic Doctor and it wasn't long before his dazzling performances captured the hearts of so many around the globe. The role of the Doctor is like no other and Ncuti's dedication, charisma and magnetism has taken the Doctor into unchartered territory which we have never experienced before. As Ncuti himself said at the start of this journey - unlike the Doctor he may only have one heart, but he is giving it all to this role - I think we can all agree that he did that, and more. Thanks, Ncuti for being such a special part of the Whoniverse.' But as viewers said goodbye to the Fifteenth Doctor they got a hello from a much-loved face... As everyone said farewell to this iconic Doctor, they also got sight of a very familiar face as the Doctor regenerated and it was none other than Billie Piper... Billie first appeared in the Whoniverse when Doctor Who returned to screens in 2005, as Rose Tyler, the much-loved Companion to the Doctor played by Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. But just how and why she is back remains to be seen… Speaking of the surprise twist, Russell T Davies adds: "Billie once changed the whole of television, back in 2005, and now she's done it again! It's an honour and a hoot to welcome her back to the TARDIS, but quite how and why and who is a story yet to be told. After 62 years, the Doctor's adventures are only just beginning!" Speaking of her return, Billie says: "It's no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return to the Whoniverse as I have some of my best memories there, so to be given the opportunity to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn't refuse, but who, how, why and when, you'll just have to wait and see." Doctor Who is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television. EP/NH/JA2

Doctor Who: Wish World – season two episode seven recap

In a season full of stories about stories and littered with fourth-wall breaks, this was a Doctor Who episode distilled into a fairytale, with Archie Panjabi delighting in playing up the wicked Rani caricature and Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor reduced to a passive, then persecuted, bystander. It was odd seeing the Doctor and Belinda (Varada Sethu) as a contented married couple, WandaVision style, enjoying the kind of boring day-to-day existence that Matt Smith's Doctor showed in The Power of Three is impossible for him to live, without getting restless. Conrad (Jonah Hauer-King) appeared to be holding the world together and taunting our heroes with his mock CBeebies Bedtime Stories show, but it looked to be taking it out of him. Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood/'a' Rani was good value as ever. Was that a hint of conflict on her face about the whole plan when she was comforting Conrad? Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday continued to prove that she is better suited to leading this show through episodes where the Doctor isn't really being the Doctor than being on board the Tardis itself, although her introduction to the underworld of ignored and dispossessed people with disabilities did slow the pace of the episode. Then there were Jonathan Groff, Ruth Madeley and Bonnie Langford in the mix too. And a run-through of previous Doctor's faces that sidestepped where exactly Jo Martin's Fugitive Doctor fits in by slotting her in between 13 and 14, where we know she definitely doesn't belong. The Giggle reared its head, too, this time creepily voiced by the stolen baby. It has been a continued presence this year. Mr Ring-a-Ding did the Stooky Bill giggle, and its waveform appeared about the Harmony arena last week. What can it all mean? What if Doctor Who did WandaVision, but with added giant bone dinosaurs? This was more about life aboard the redressed Unit set, which also housed much of the action in last year's two-part finale. It was reassuring to see that in whatever timeline we are in Col Ibrahim (Alexander Devrient) has the hots for his boss, Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave). We will see more of that pair in forthcoming spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea. Much as he did in 2008's Turn Left and in his drama Years and Years, Russell T Davies explored here a vision of contemporary Britain that had turned more authoritarian. The script may have focused on 'doubt' being the thought crimes committed, but it was clear that Davies was drawing parallels with regimes where you can be dragged out of your home and disappeared for being gay, for being political, for being different, for your family being suspicious of you. It was more chilling than any of the science fiction in the episode, and a timely warning. It is hard to know where to begin. Everything was a mystery, in an episode that was nearly all set-up and no payoff. We don't know what the bone monsters are. We don't know where Belinda has disappeared to. We don't know why Poppy is there. More than anything, we don't know why they billed this era as a soft reboot where people could jump on with the aim of attracting a new younger audience, and then crammed it full of things that first appeared in episodes in the 1970s and 80s and have barely been referenced since. Baffling. Fun at times, but baffling. We first encountered the Doctor's alias of John Smith in Patrick Troughton's 1968 adventure The Wheel in Space. Omega, a Gallifreyan solar engineer, made his debut in the 10th anniversary romp The Three Doctors, and cropped up again 10 years later during the Peter Davison era in 1983's Arc of Infinity. The Gallifreyan Seal, sometimes known as the Seal of Rassilon, first appeared on Gallifrey during 1976 Tom Baker story The Deadly Assassin. However, the prop was recycled by designer Roger Murray-Leach, having previously been seen in 1975's Revenge of the Cybermen as an emblem of the Vogans. They are not to be confused with the Vogons and their terrible poetry in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Turning people into animals may be a fairytale trope, but the first transformation Frau Rani caused in Bavaria, turning the mother into violets, echoed her tactics in 1985's The Mark of the Rani. Kate O'Mara's incarnation of the Time Lady had landmines that turned people into trees when they stood on them. Dugga Doo, from last week's Interstellar Song Contest, has become such a cult hit that the BBC has produced a full-length version of the song without the dialogue over the top of it, and on Wednesday launched a 24/7 YouTube livestream with the earworm on a constant loop. It's the season finale. The BBC has said there will be no previews for journalists, and no early morning iPlayer drop, so everybody gets to watch The Reality War at exactly the same time on BBC One, iPlayer, Disney+ internationally, and in cinemas in the UK.
