Indy superintendents back youth curfew as IMPD preps for weekend before WNBA All-Star game
In response to the urgent call for action to protect the city's youth, 11 Marion County superintendents have announced their full support of extending curfew hours. The proposed ordinance would begin curfew hours two hours earlier than the current law, restricting unsupervised public access for minors between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday and Saturday for youth ages 15 to 17. For those younger than 15, the curfew would apply daily from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. In a press release, the superintendents said that the proposal is not about punishment, but prevention. "As leaders, we see firsthand the promise and potential of our young people as well as the responsibility we share — as educators, parents, and community leaders — to ensure their safety and well-being. A curfew reinforces those values. It sends a clear message that our community stands united in protecting our youth and investing in their future." The superintendents said the curfew creates conditions where youth can thrive, and not just survive. The proposal would reclaim streets and neighborhoods and create a collective peace of mind. Indianapolis Public Schools, Warren Township, Wayne Township, Pike Township, Washington Township, Decatur Township, School Town of Speedway, Beech Grove, Lawrence Township, Perry Township, and Franklin Township Community School Corporation want Proposal No. 232, introduced by Councilor Leroy Robinson, to pass. This weekend lands between the WNBA All-Star game, which is set to bring thousands downtown, and last weekend's mass shooting that left two teens dead after seven people between the ages of 16-21 were shot near Monument Circle. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Chris Bailey pinned a video to social channels, stating that the department needed help to send young people a message of non-violence. "I'm asking and I'm begging that we have a peaceful and safe weekend," Bailey said in a video. "I'm asking for help from everyone in the community. Let's put the guns and the weapons down. Let's look at this precious life that we only have one of." He said the department is as committed as ever to keep the community safe, and Maj. Corey Mims with the department's Community Engagement and Outreach Bureau said there will be around 200 police officers working the area downtown. "It can't just be the police. It has to be the community," Mims said. "It has to be the parents. It has to be the community organizations that are available to our kids and our families throughout the city of Indianapolis. It takes everybody." The department's call to action from the community is making sure parents aren't dropping off their kids downtown or allowing teens and kids to take Ubers and roam around unsupervised. Mims also said the goal for the department isn't to mass-arrest kids who do break curfew. "It's not meant to be punitive," Mims said. "Again, we encourage our parents and our guardians to be in the know where their kids are. We want to be able to have conversations with the kids that we do come in contact with. Hopefully, it doesn't happen after curfew has been implemented." The superintendents are urging residents and parents to contact their City-County Council representative and voice support for Proposal No. 232. The ordinance will be reviewed by the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Committee at 5:30 p.m. July 16, where public comment is welcome.

Brevard boy, 3, was accidentally shot by teen relative, sheriff's office says
A 3-year-old Brevard County boy was accidentally shot in the arm Monday by a 14-year-old relative, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. The boy is currently in stable condition and is expected to recover after being airlifted to Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, a Tuesday news release from the sheriff's office said. Deputies responded to a residence in the 4000 block of Aurantia Road in Mims around 12:20 p.m. Monday after receiving a 911 call, according to the release. The boy was being cared for by relatives there. The teenager was attempting to move a firearm to a secure location when it went off, the release said. Tod Goodyear, a sheriff's office spokesperson, said Wednesday the investigation is ongoing and there is a possibility charges may be pursued, but no arrests have been made. Florida law says any person who 'knows or reasonably should know' a minor under 16 can likely access their firearms and doesn't properly secure them can be charged with a second-degree misdemeanor if the firearm comes into the possession of a minor who then uses it in a 'careless' manner. The shooting follows a June 29 incident in Lake County where a 5-year-old Eustis boy accidentally shot himself in the head with his father's gun, according to Eustis Police Chief Craig Capri. The boy was also airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital.

Denver Broncos WR Marvin Mims Jr.: 'The Times Are Changing For Us'
The vibes are high for the Denver Broncos after making their first playoff appearance since winning Super Bowl 50. And, on that note, Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. thinks there's a next gear on tap for them. "You can kind of feel throughout the locker room that everyone's hungry, especially the guys who were here and played in Buffalo last year and got a taste of the playoffs. They know what it's like, know what it takes to get there. Then we bring in [Talanoa] Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw, Evan Engram. We bring in some more guys. … You can really feel that the times are changing for us," Mims said in an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Tuesday. "People always like to say a 'win-now' mode. With the way things went last year, we were projected to be last in the league last year and end up making the wild card. Guys that were here last year, they believe. The guys that are coming in, they want to make an impact, too. I think everyone's hungry." The Broncos finished 10-7 and earned a wild-card berth before losing to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC wild-card round, 31-7. Mims, who Denver selected with the No. 63 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, has returned punts but also kicks over his first two seasons. Leading the NFL with 15.7 yards per punt return in 2024 and averaging 26.9 yards per kick return — including a 99-yard touchdown in 2023 — for his career has primarily helped Mims earn a Pro Bowl nod in both years. As a receiver, Mims totaled 39 receptions for 503 yards and six touchdowns last season, earning an All-Pro honor. He ranked 51st among wide receivers with a 70.9 overall grade, according to Pro Football Focus. The year prior, Mims averaged 17.1 yards per reception. Granted, he had just 22 receptions on 33 targets. Optimism around Denver is mostly centered around second-year quarterback Bo Nix, who threw for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns in his 2024 rookie campaign. Mims is part of a wide receiver room that includes Courtland Sutton, Devaughn Vele, Troy Franklin and third-round draft pick Pat Bryant, among others. As for Denver's offseason acquisitions, the aforementioned Hufanga, a 2022 All-Pro, and Greenlaw, who totaled 100-plus combined tackles in both 2022 and 2023, join a defense that was first in the NFL in sacks (63.0), third in opponent points (18.3 per game) and seventh in opponent total yards (317.1 per game) last season. Meanwhile, Engram totaled 114 receptions with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2023, earning a Pro Bowl nod. As for the 2025 NFL Draft as a whole, Denver selected Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron with the No. 20 pick and UCF running back RJ Harvey at pick No. 60. "I feel like we're really poised, and we're really level-headed this year and that we're going to make something happen as long as we just keep it going on each other and just strive to get there," Mims said. Mims and the Broncos open the 2025 regular season at home against No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 7 (4:05 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app). Sean Payton praises Broncos' 3rd-year weapon
Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims made an instant impact on special teams as a rookie, earning a Pro Bowl nod and second-team All-Pro selection as a returner in 2023. Mims did not have a large role on offense, but that changed during his second season. The 23-year-old speedster ended last season with 545 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns (a big increase from his one offensive touchdown in 2023). 'We saw him take a big step in the middle of the year," Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Mims this spring. As the team started giving Mims more snaps -- including reps at running back -- he flourished. 'I've said this to you before: Confidence is born out of demonstrated ability," Payton said last month. "You guys have done this long enough. You've seen people, athletes grow up right in front of your eyes. That began not just at the end of the season. That began early part of the middle [of the] season. You could see it and certainly feel it now.' Mims made the Pro Bowl again last season and was named a first-team All-Pro. Through his first two years in the NFL, Mims has 2,263 all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns. He has emerged as an all-around weapon for Denver, and Mims continues to trend up going into Year 3. Broncos' WR Marvin Mims Reveals Where Things Stand With Bo Nix
Broncos' WR Marvin Mims Reveals Where Things Stand With Bo Nix originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Denver Broncos drafted receiver Marvin Mims in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Mims' receiving production has been decent in his first two years in Denver, but his play on special teams has been outstanding. Advertisement Mims has made the Pro Bowl each of his first two years in the league and is coming off an All-Pro year in 2024 as a special-teams player. The Broncos' versatile gadget has made his mark as a punt and kick returner, but now he's ready to make the next jump as a receiver with his second-year quarterback, Bo Nix, in 2025. Mims believes a special connection is brewing between the duo, and it started last season and has developed since the Broncos' playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills. 'We go to Buffalo. We go up 7-0, we're feeling good. And then at the end of the game, we get our butts whooped and the season's over,' Mims told The Denver Post's Sean Keeler. "I don't want to say it's a terrible feeling. But you're kind of sitting there (and) part of me is like, because I'm young, and I'm going to be here next year, it's like, 'Dang, we've really got something.' And then part of the other part of me is like, 'Dang, we really missed out on an opportunity.'" Advertisement But that missed opportunity has only lit a fire inside Mims ahead of 2025. 'But just knowing what you've got, the type of program you have, the type of culture you have, you just kind of have that feeling like, 'Yeah, I'm going to be back," Mims said. "And we're going to do some special things here.'' Mims is coming off a career-high 503 receiving yards and six touchdowns. He'll be Nix's No. 2 option likely in 2025, and looking to build on his production from last year. The third-year receiver noticed Nix's growth throughout his rookie season and is excited to see where the young quarterback can grow in 2025. Advertisement 'It's funny, because towards that (middle) of (2024), Bo was obviously getting more comfortable in the offense. He's like, 'Hey, if we get this, if we get that, if you get this, let's go eyes early, eyes late. Be ready.' And it showed," Mims said. "Now it's more of, I don't want to say him progressing … he's seeing it differently now. And us kind of going from those routes we did last year to making it more broad to other routes, too. And just understanding what he's seeing and what I'm seeing, what I'm feeling, what he wants. Denver Broncos wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (19) celebrates his touchdown with wide receiver Lil'Jordan Humphrey (84) and quarterback Bo Nix (10) in the third quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs at Empower Field at Mile J. Downing-Imagn Images 'But the connection was definitely there last year. And we're just going to keep trying to grow and spread across the room. Because I think, especially with Bo, he knows what he wants. He knows what he sees. The quarterback coach is the pass game coordinator (Davis Webb), so they're talking all the time. And it's going to be a lot better this year. I'm looking forward to it.' Mims mentioned that after the loss to the Bills, a lot of the team stuck around to work together early in the offseason and took vacations together to continue to build those relationships. Advertisement The Broncos' shift in culture and energy has been evident in their rebuild led by Sean Payton and centered around Nix at the helm. 'Sean (Payton) is going to have a competitive team regardless. He said it last year a bunch of times: 'Young and hungry is dangerous.' That's something we were last year, and we felt it. We could feel the energy," Mims said. "So we're excited to go. I'm excited to go. I'm excited to see what this team can do, even in the preseason, because, I mean, it's a culture thing … I'm really excited.' There are a lot of expectations around the Broncos in 2025. After making the playoffs with a rookie quarterback last year, adding weapons, and bolstering an already elite defense, this team looks poised for a deep playoff run. That poise and leadership start with the man in charge of the offense, and Mims sees Nix stepping up in that role. Advertisement 'It starts at the helm. It really starts with Bo. Bo is the most confident (guy) … we can have a good time too, but he's so serious. Like when it's time to do football, it's time to do football. And everybody feels that. Everybody learns off of him," Mims said. "And he's always the one speaking. It's not like he's just there, quiet, with a serious look on his face. He's up there speaking. So we see that off of him.'
