Highway 400 NB ramp at Essa Road officially opens in Barrie
Construction pylons block the on-ramp to Highway 400 south along Essa Road in Barrie, Ont. Traffic in the south end of Barrie will flow a little smoother along a busy section of Essa Road with the official opening of the northbound ramp to Highway 400 on Thursday. Barrie police posted to social media Thursday morning to notify motorists the ramp under the 400 bridge had opened, and the temporary on-ramp to the highway that required a left turn at the lights at Fairview Road was no longer. That area is now a through lane. Last month, the Fairview Road carpool lot was reopened and the Ardagh Road carpool lot was closed for crews to continue work along Essa Road. It is expected to reopen by the end of July. The project consisted of constructing a new interchange at Essa Road and Highway 400 and widening Essa Road from four lanes to six from Bryne Drive to Fairview Road to improve traffic flow. The Essa Road interchange and Highway 400 overpass replacement project is being led by the Ministry of Transportation.

Hwy. 17 closed after crash involving fuel truck in Petawawa, driver airlifted
An Ontario Provincial Police crest is pictured on an officer's uniform. (Supplied) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have closed part of Highway 17 following a serious crash in Petawawa Wednesday morning. Police say officers responded to the crash at approximately 9:30 a.m. involving a pickup and a transport truck with two tanker-trailers carrying fuel. The crash has resulted in the full closure of the highway between Paquette Road and Brindle Road. 'The OPP is advising the public to avoid the area if possible or please follow the detour from Highway 17 to Messer Trail, then Paquette Road back to Highway 17,' the OPP said in a news release. One of the tanker trailers is leaking because of the crash, police say, requiring a specialized environmental clean up team to respond. The driver of the pickup was airlifted to a regional trauma centre with serious injuries, police say. Officers remain on scene Wednesday afternoon as crews from the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Environment work to assist in the cleanup. 'There is currently no estimated time of reopening,' police say. An investigation is underway. Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident is asked to contact the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at

Moose found dead on Hwy. 417 in Ottawa's east end
Ontario Provincial Police say a moose was reported dead on Highway 417 near Walkley Road just before 6 a.m. Tuesday. (Ministry of Transportation cameras/website) Ontario Provincial Police are urging motorists to be on the lookout for moose and other wildlife along highways, after a moose was found dead on Highway 417 in Ottawa's east end. Police tell CTV News Ottawa a dead moose was reported in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 417 near Walkley Road around 6 a.m. Tuesday. Crews from the Ministry of Transportation attended the scene to remove the moose from the highway. OPP Const. Michael Fathi said it appears the moose was struck by a large truck on the highway. Fathi adds there was no vehicle at the scene when officers arrived and no one has reported that it struck the moose. In a social media post, police said moose have been seen in Ottawa as recently as this week, and along Highway 401. 'Moose are a significant road hazard, especially around dawn and dusk. Collisions with a moose can be deadly—for both drivers and the animal,' the OPP said on X. 'Wildlife-crossing signs mark proven danger zones, but moose can walk onto the road virtually anywhere in eastern Ontario. Slow down in known moose territory and keep your eyes on the road and the ditches ahead.'

B.C. government to provide update on Broadway Subway project
A Millennium Line train is seen at VCC-Clark station in this undated photo from TransLink. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is set to provide an update Monday on the long-awaited Broadway Subway project. The province will be giving a tour of the guideway and tunnel of the SkyTrain expansion. The project is both behind schedule and over budget. The Broadway Subway will extend the SkyTrain Millennium Line from its current terminus at VCC-Clark Station to Arbutus Street, reducing travel times along that stretch of the Broadway corridor to just 11 minutes. The new line will not directly travel to UBC, and riders heading to the university will need to transfer to the 99 B-Line bus. In December, the province announced the project's budget had increased by $127 million to $2.95 billion. The subway line was initially planned to open in 2025, but the B.C. Government announced last year that it wouldn't be completed until 2027.

Highway 407 East now toll-free from Pickering to Clarington
The provincially owned portion of Ontario's Highway 407 is officially toll-free as of Sunday. The move, announced as part of the Progressive Conservative government's budget last month, took effect June 1. The budget permanently removed tolls from the provincially operated Highway 407 East from Pickering to Clarington. Premier Doug Ford had promised the move earlier this year during the provincial election campaign as a way to provide relief for drivers. The province estimates removing the tolls would save daily commuters around $7,200 annually. A Ministry of Transportation report in 2021 projected those tolls would generate around $72 million in provincial revenue in 2024-25.
