Pakistan 'dismayed' over PM Modi's remarks in J&K over Pahalgam terror attack

Pakistan on Friday (June 6, 2025) said it was "dismayed" over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks that Islamabad was involved in the Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 civilians were killed. Mr. Modi on Friday accused Pakistan of targeting "insaniyat and Kashmiriyat" through the terror attack in Pahalgam. "Our neighbouring country stands against humanity, social harmony, and economic prosperity," he said while addressing a rally in Katra after inaugurating the first direct train service to the Kashmir Valley. "Not only that, it is also the enemy of poor people's 'rozi-roti' [bread and butter]," Mr. Modi said, as he reiterated that the April 22 Pahalgam attack was a stark example through which Pakistan "intended to incite communal violence in India and cripple the earnings of hardworking Kashmiris". Commenting on his remarks, Pakistan's Foreign Office said it "firmly rejects the baseless and misleading remarks" made by the Prime Minister. 🔊PR No:1️⃣6️⃣6️⃣/2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣5️⃣ Pakistan Strongly Rejects the Indian Prime Minister's Misleading Remarks. 🔗⬇️ — Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Pakistan (@ForeignOfficePk) June 6, 2025 'We are deeply dismayed that the Indian Prime Minister has once again chosen to accuse Pakistan of involvement in the Pahalgam attack, without presenting a single piece of credible evidence,' it said in a statement. 'Pakistan remains steadfast in its principled support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their just struggle for their rights and dignity. We call upon the international community, including the United Nations and human rights organisations, to hold India accountable for its oppression and to ensure that the Kashmiri people are allowed to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination, as enshrined in the relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions,' the statement added. About two weeks after the horrific terror attack in Pahalgam, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7. India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

US citizen Glezmann freed by Afghanistan's Taliban

The Taliban have freed a US citizen detained in Afghanistan for more than two years following direct talks between United States hostage envoy Adam Boehler and Taliban officials in Kabul, a source briefed on the release says. George Glezmann, who was detained in 2022 while visiting Kabul as a tourist, left Afghanistan aboard a Qatari aircraft on Thursday evening bound for Qatar, the source said. Glezmann and Boehler are expected to later travel onward to the United States. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement on Thursday confirming Glezmann's release. George Glezmann is free. George was wrongfully detained in Afghanistan for two and a half years, but now he's on his way to be reunited with his wife Aleksandra. Welcome home, George! 🇺🇸 — Secretary Marco Rubio (@SecRubio) March 20, 2025 Thursday's meeting in Kabul marked the highest-level direct talks between the United States and the Taliban since US President Donald Trump came to power in January. Boehler met with the Taliban administration's foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, according to a statement by the Afghan foreign ministry. "During this meeting, discussions were held on Afghanistan-US bilateral relations, the release of prisoners and the provision of consular services to Afghans in the United States," the statement said. Qatar, which represents US diplomatic interests in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, co-ordinated with Boehler to negotiate Glezmann's release with the Taliban authorities, the source said. "Following weeks of negotiations, a breakthrough was made by the Qataris during recent meetings with the Taliban," the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The Taliban authorities released Glezmann as a "goodwill gesture" and not as part of a deal to free any Afghan detainees held by the US in exchange, the source said. Glezmann's was the second high-profile release of a US citizen held overseas secured amid diplomacy by Boehler. Boehler was involved in efforts that led to the release of US school teacher Marc Fogel from Russia last month. In addition, Boehler has held direct talks with Palestinian militant group Hamas in an effort to secure the release of remaining hostages held in the Gaza Strip. He also travelled to Iraq last month to push for the release of Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, a student at Princeton University. Glezmann, a mechanic for Delta Airlines in Atlanta, was visiting Kabul as a tourist when he was detained by the Taliban in December 2022, according to the Foley Foundation, which monitors cases of US citizens detained overseas. The foundation said Glezmann had been in sporadic telephone contact with his wife since he was detained, and that he had health conditions that deteriorated while in detention.
