Netflix hit show compared to Yellowstone gets HUGE streaming numbers while fans are already clamoring for another season

Almost exactly a month before its debut on Netflix, the numbers are in confirming the streaming service has a huge hit on its hands. The Nielsen streaming ratings for the week of April 14-20 confirm this show had a massive debut, coming in second on the overall charts behind another Netflix show: Black Mirror. The show is such a hit that fans have been consistently taking to social media to clamor for a second season. While Netflix has not confirmed the renewal yet, some even think it will be announced during the live Tudum event at the end of May, hosted by Sofia Carson. What is this huge new hit show? It's none other than Ransom Canyon, starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, which THR reports amassed 1.12 billion viewing hours for its first week. Ransom Canyon was by far the biggest debut of that week, and had the second-most viewing hours of the week overall, behind Black Mirror (1.58 billion viewing hours). What is this huge new hit show? 'Ransom Canyon' season 2: Everything we know so far

Shortly after it premiered on Netflix on April 17, Western romantic drama "Ransom Canyon" galloped its way onto the streamer's top 10 shows list, with a whopping 2.6 billion minutes watched after that cliffhanger finale. (That's 2 billion more minutes fellow buzzy title "MobLand," per Variety.) In case you missed it, the "Yellowstone"-meets-"Virgin River" series is an adaptation of the popular 10-book series of the same name by Jodi Thomas, starring Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly and James Brolin. The story sees "love, loss, and loyalty collide beneath the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country," per the series' official logline. Three ranching families locked in a contest for control of the land, their lives and legacies are threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life. At the center of it all is stoic rancher Staten Kirkland (Duhamel), who is healing from heartbreaking loss and on a quest for vengeance.' And given the viewership success of the drama's first season, it seems all but certain that "Ransom Canyon" will rope in a second installment on Netflix. Here's everything we know about "Ransom Canyon" season 2 so far. (Warning: season 1 spoilers ahead!) Officially, Netflix has not yet announced that "Ransom Canyon" season 2 has been greenlit. However, as mentioned, all of that positive buzz and strong viewership stats certainly help the show's case for a season 2 pick-up. Also, show creator April Blair has previously disclosed to Deadline that the writers' room is already working on potential scripts for a second season (and also teased that they're looking to cast the mysterious brunette from Yancy's past who shockingly showed up in the final moments of the season 1 finale). Similarly, series star Josh Duhamel spoke confidently about future editions of the romantic drama in an interview with Town & Country. 'I want it to feel unpredictable, raw, real, and interesting,' he said, adding, "I don't know what they have planned. They've been in the writer's room now for a bit, so we'll see.' Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Seeing as how "Ransom Canyon" hasn't been officially picked up for a second season just yet, we don't have any intel on a release date. However, if the Netflix original does ultimately get greenlit for season 2, we would expect the episodes to drop in fall or winter 2026. That would be in line with the release schedule of the show's first season. Marie Claire reports "Ransom Canyon" began filming on season 1 in February 2024 and wrapped in June, with the series premiering on Netflix in April 2025. If production soon begins on those prospected season 2 episodes, fall 2026 is looking like a good bet for a release window. We certainly haven't seen the last of Josh Duhamel's Staten Kirkland and Minka Kelly's Quinn O'Grady, though we left the latter contemplating a move back to the Big Apple to perform with the New York Philharmonic that would put her burgeoning romance with Staten on pause. Elsewhere, we have unfinished business with Ellie Estevez (Marianly Tejada) and Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher), especially because their would-be nuptials were shockingly interrupted by — spoiler alert! — Yancy's heretofore undisclosed wife. Other cast members that will likely be making their return in season 2 are Garrett Wareing as Lucas Russell, Lizzy Greene as Lucas's girlfriend Lauren Brigman, Philip Winchester as Lauren's dad Sheriff Dan Brigman, Eoin Macken as Davis Collins, Andrew Liner as Davis's son Reid and Justin Johnson Cortez as sheriff's deputy Kai. However, unless there are flashbacks or dream sequences, we don't expect the return of Emmy winner James Brolin as gruff old rancher Cap Fuller, given that his character died of natural causes at the end of season 1, effectively leaving his ranch and estate to his estranged grandson Yancy. Since "Ransom Canyon" season 2 hasn't been announced just yet, there aren't many details floating around about potential plotlines for season 2. However, creator April Blair did say that fans could expect a time jump in the new eps, telling TV Insider: "Quinn needs to go away and save her ranch, and we need to see what the implications are for that punch that Davis goads Staten into doing and what that plot between Davis and Staten's father, the senator, is like. "I think we would probably do that because she says, 'I'm going to go away for six months.' So the idea right now, although nothing's set in stone, is that we would do at least a six-month time jump." Blair also discussed how the arrest of Margaret Brigman in connection with Randall Kirkland's death would have lasting effects for her husband and daughter in a second season. "In a potential Season 2, I think it's a huge part of what's going are morality tales, and so every aspect of this show, we always try to come from that foundation of love, lands, and legacy, and what that really means," she told TV Insider. "For Sheriff Dan, this is his legacy and his family and the people that he loves. He has this moral choice. Does he do the right thing by his family and the wrong thing by his profession? That's his morality moment, so we try to do that with everyone, but that's the thing he's grappling with, and he painfully chooses to do the right thing." Overall, though, Blair simply wants to leave the audience wanting more at the end of each season, telling Tudum: 'It makes you feel warm and familiar, and you don't want to let go. That is how I hope people feel. It's how I feel about the show watching it.'

'Ransom Canyon' star thought Hollywood career was over before landing Netflix role

"Ransom Canyon" star Minka Kelly thought she was done working in Hollywood before landing a role on the hit Netflix show. During a recent appearance on "Today with Jenna & Friends," the 44-year-old actress opened up about wondering if her time as an actress had come to an end before getting cast on Netflix's latest hit show, saying, "I thought that so many times." "I think that every job that finishes, you're like … and then the amount of time passes, and you are like, 'OK, this is it. I had a good run and that's okay. Everything's okay. I have my backup. I can be a scrub tech again,'" she said. In the new show, Kelly plays a musician and owner of the town's local dance hall who finds herself stuck in a love triangle and having to choose between two feuding ranchers, played by Eoin Macken and Josh Duhamel. Kelly first became a household name when she starred as Lyla Garrity on the hit show "Friday Night Lights" from 2006 to 2009. Since then, she has appeared in various projects, including "Just Go With It," "Jane the Virgin," "Euphoria" and others. "I think that every job that finishes, you're like … and then the amount of time passes, and you are like, 'OK this is it. I had a good run and that's OK. Everything's OK. I have my backup. I can be a scrub tech again.'" After more than 20 years in the business, Kelly says her experience playing Quinn O'Grady on "Ransom Canyon" has been her favorite job "for a lot of reasons." "I think the main reason just being I am in the best place I have ever been, so I'm able to just really be in it in a different way than before," she explained. "A sense of comfort that comes with life experience and also maybe just being a woman in her 40s." Although she has found success in Hollywood, she admits to thinking about returning to her career as a scrub tech in the operating room "all the time." "Because I think it's a thing that sort of gives me a little bit of confidence," she explained. "This isn't the whole world, so the rejection that you get being an actor is sort of balanced out for me in that I can go, 'I'm good at this' and I loved it so much. It's really good to feel like you're good at something." The show was filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where Kelly grew up. When speaking with Jenna Bush Hager and Andy Cohen on "The Today Show," Kelly admitted the thought of returning to her hometown was "scary," but that once she was there, "it really was not so scary after all." In her 2023 memoir, "Tell Me Everything," Kelly opened up about her rough childhood growing up with a single mother who worked as an exotic dancer. She detailed stories of going to the strip club with her mother as a child and her experiences with physical abuse and performing in peep shows at an adult video store to make ends meet. "It was a kind of surreal and beautiful way to sort of put a bow on that whole story just to make peace with it, and then the universe is like, 'Let's see how much peace you made with it,'" she said of returning to Albuquerque to film the show. "You just are like, 'Wow, I have my power back.'" She continued, "I have a deep compassion for that version of me, and now I get to experience New Mexico with more grown-up, more healed eyes and see all the beauty that there is that you sort of don't get to appreciate when you're younger."

Ransom Canyon star Minka Kelly reveals she has thought about leaving Hollywood 'many times' for a less than glamorous 'backup profession'

Minka Kelly has opened up about how she considered leaving acting 'many times' for her 'backup profession' - which is a far cry from the glitz and glam of Hollywood. The actress, 44, told how she is considering returning to her 'backup' career as an operating room scrub nurse because it continues to give her 'a bit of confidence'. The Friday Night Lights star, who is dating singer-songwriter Dan Reynolds, discussed the option during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Friends show with guest co-host Andy Cohen on Tuesday. During the interview, Andy asked: 'Is it true that you thought Hollywood was over you?', to which Minka said she had considered 'many times'. She said: 'I think after any job finishes If any amount of time passes, you're like, "Okay, this is it. I had a good run. And that's okay, everything's okay. I have my backup. I can be a scrub tech again". When asked if she thought about going back to being a scrub tech in the OR (operating room), Minka said: 'I think of it all the time. I think it's something that gives me a bit of confidence...' Minka Kelly has opened up about how she considered leaving acting 'many times' for her 'backup profession' - which is a far cry from the glitz and glam of Hollywood Referring to the entertainment industry, she said: 'You know this isn't the whole world. So the rejection that you get being an actor is sort of balanced out for me and you can go, "But I'm good at this. I know I'm good at this". Speaking about her experience of being a nurse, she said: 'I loved it so much. It's really good to feel like you're good at something.' Minka's latest project is Netflix series Ransom Canyon - which has been dubbed as the next Yellowstone. The series debuted on the streaming platform on April 17 but the reviews that are pouring in are so far mixed. 'Love, loss, and loyalty collide when three ranching family dynasties fight for control of the land. Their lives and legacies are threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life,' Netflix's synopsis read. Reviewers seemed to dislike the drama more than viewers with headlines calling it 'a try-hard Western' that is a 'far cry from Yellowstone,' and 'goes down easy but leaves a weird after taste.' The soapy series also stars Josh Duhamel, James Brolin, Eoin Macken, Lizzy Greene, Andrew Liner, Marianly Tejada, Garrett Wareing and Jack Schumacher. USA Today gave the series one and a half stars out of four as it said, 'Peek underneath the jean jackets and cowboy hats and you'll find there's very little substance to Canyon.' AV Club said, 'The show's ten episodes are engineered for maximum escapism and bingeability.' Both Duhamel and Kelly have compared their western soap to food. The Win a Date with Tad Hamilton star, called it 'comfort food,' while the Friday Night Lights actress called it 'gooey chocolate cake.' And while many reviews compared Ransom Canyon to Yellowstone and its spin-offs, that wasn't quite on the mark. Netflix was looking to capitalize on the success they've had with romantic dramas Virgin and Sweet Magnolias, this time with some western flair. The series is adapted from the series of books by Jodi Thomas and created by Wednesday writer April Blair. Set in the fictional town of Ransom Canyon, Variety called it 'horny, absurd, and ridiculously entertaining' and 'a sexy, predictable, breezy viewing experience that delivers on its promises.' The Hollywood Reporter called the series, 'featureless and formulaic, happy to borrow just a fraction of your attention while you mostly focus on other things.' Another thing that isn't sitting well with reviewers is the entirely white cast that focuses on several love triangles and an as-thus unrequited love between Duhamel's Staten and Kelly's Quinn. Quinn is not only the owner of the only bar in town, she's also Staten's late wife's best friend. Staten is hauling around a heap of grief having lost his wife and only son in the not too recent past. Over on X, (formerly Twitter), viewers, who've had 12 ish hours to see the series are more positive about it. Users of that social media platform shared pics of the various couples on the show and commented about the heat and the tension. Several of the reviews called Ransom Canyon, background TV, but they clearly didn't check with its intended audience. One fan wrote, 'they rly gaslit me in the trailer bc why'd i think that scene of quinn and davis laying by the fireplace was quinn and stanten.' Davis Collins is played by Eoin Macken and he comes with almost as much baggage as Staten does. Davis is a thrice-divorced single father who is basically a grifter who knows how to turn on the charm to entice Quinn. Another viewer, wrote: 'He as the cowboy who lost his wife and son and she as the hidden artist who was a friend of his late wife. me: I LOVE THE DRAMA.' Someone else compared it to Netflix's Virgin River, ' If Yellowstone was made by Hallmark, you'd get Ransom Canyon — all the ranch drama, none of the grit. If you're into Virgin River vibes, this one's your next binge.' And for one Minka Kelly fan, they are just grateful she's back on screen to watch. 'Minka Kelly back on my screen in Ransom Canyon is the small-town drama serotonin I needed. Ranch life, secrets, and Minka? Say less.'
