911 calls reveal chaos during Miramar shooting near Aldi supermarket

Newly obtained 911 calls reveal terrifying moments during a weekend shooting in Miramar that began outside an apartment complex and spilled into the parking lot of a nearby Aldi supermarket. The incident happened just before 3 p.m. Saturday on Miramar Parkway near Southwest 122nd Avenue. Two people were wounded and 19-year-old Kelton Reed was arrested after allegedly carjacking a woman at gunpoint and fleeing the scene, according to police. A brief pursuit led to his arrest. A Miramar Police spokeswoman said they are still searching for additional suspects. "It sounded like machine guns" Several 911 callers described the panic and confusion as gunfire rang out. "I am pretty sure I heard 20 gunshots," said one caller. Another caller from the Epic Vibe Residences said, "There was a lot of gunfire. It sounded like machine guns." A third caller reported, "There was just someone opening fire with a gun." Police said after the initial gunfire, Reed pointed a pistol at a woman and threatened to kill her if she didn't give up her red 2019 Ford Mustang. He was later arrested and charged with robbery, carjacking with a firearm and aggravated assault with intent to commit a felony. A judge found probable cause for the charges and ordered Reed to be held without bond during his appearance in bond court on Sunday. Supermarket customers take cover The situation escalated as it moved into the Aldi parking lot, where customers took shelter inside the store. "I am at the Aldi on Miramar Parkway. There is a shooting outside," one caller told a 911 dispatcher. "Who is shooting at who?" the dispatcher asked. "I don't know. We are locked inside the supermarket and can just hear gunshots," the caller said. "Are they still there?" the dispatcher asked. "I don't know. Everyone is inside the supermarket," the caller replied, then added with a sigh, "Oh my God. I can't get out of here." Resident: "I picked up my son and started running" Felipe Larramonde, a resident of the apartment complex, said he had a terrifying encounter during the incident. He told CBS News Miami that he was walking outside with his 18-month-old son when he saw three men arguing, followed by gunfire. "The guy started shooting," he said. "And I saw bullets flying past me. And I picked up my son under me and started running." Larramonde showed CBS News how a bullet entered his sliding glass door near his balcony and pointed out four bullet holes in his living room. According to Miramar Police, both people who were wounded in the incident were hospitalized. One has since been released. Investigators have not yet determined whether the victims were bystanders or involved in the altercation. Anyone with information about the case or the additional suspects is urged to contact Miramar Police or Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS (8477).

Man climbs light pole in Miramar, refuses to come down for nearly four hours

A strange site in Miramar on Monday morning, after a man climbed up a traffic light pole and refused to come down for almost four hours. According to Miramar police, this was not the first time the man had done something like this, it was actually the fourth. They said he's done it twice in Miramar and once in Miami Beach and North Miami Beach. Around 7:30 a.m., the man climbed up the pole at Miramar Parkway and State Road 7. While perched on the side of it, police said he waved to those below, blew kisses at them and sang at times. He also unleashed a string of profanities while speaking with crisis negotiators, according to police. As negotiators patiently tried for hours to get him to come down, he did so on his own around 11:15 a.m. "This has been his MO, it's not our first encounter with him. We had him about two years ago, and we successfully had him dealt with in terms of getting him the medical care he continue to work with him and his family. We responded with social workers so he gets the mental health care he needs," police spokeswoman Janice McIntosh said. Police said after he came down, the man was taken into custody with the arrest report noting he had mental health issues. After he's processed at the police department, social services will step in to determine what's next.

From two-lane outpost to Broward boomtown. Take a look at city in 1950s and '60s

If Miramar was a car, it would be one of those high-performance models that goes from 0 to 60 in no time. Founded in 1955 with less than 200 people, the Southwest Broward city now claims about 140,000 residents and counting. When Miramar became a city, U.S. 441 was a two-lane road and Miramar's only major artery. Retired people flocked to the new outpost, just west of Hallandale. Today, both I-75 and Florida's Turnpike run through Miramar, and I-95 and the Sawgrass Expressway aren't far away. And the city is booming with a diverse population, and lots of commerce and culture. Miramar, equal distance from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, was even dubbed a 'Boomburg' by Planning magazine in 2009. Let's take a look at how Miramar looked in the early years as we flip through photos from the Miami Herald Archives:

Man arrested in Miramar Aldi shooting carjacked woman's Mustang, held without bond, court documents say

New details have been revealed following an arrest made in Saturday's shooting and carjacking near a Miramar Aldi from this weekend. Kelton Reed, 19, was arrested Saturday following the incident and charged with robbery, carjacking and aggravated assault after a shootout from a nearby apartment complex spilled into the nearby supermarket, where he pointed a gun at a woman and threatened to kill her if he didn't take her vehicle. Two people were injured in the shooting. One of the victims was released from the hospital Saturday night while the other remains hospitalized in stable condition. Reed appeared in court on Sunday morning, where the judge ordered that he be held without bond. An altercation leads to gunfire and a carjacking According to Miramar Police, an altercation at the Epic Residences on Miramar Parkway off Flamingo Road escalated into a shooting on Saturday afternoon, where 20 rounds were fired. One of the people involved in the altercation -- later identified as Reed -- ran into the nearby Aldi, where he encountered a woman driving her red 2019 Fort Mustang, pointed a gun at her, demanding that she get out of the car or "he would kill her," according to arrest documents obtained by CBS News Miami. The woman, in fear for her life, got out of the car, and Reed jumped into the driver's seat and drove off. A "very brief" police pursuit ensued, and Reed bailed from the car before officers apprehended him and took him into custody. When the scene spilled into the Aldi, shoppers were stuck inside as police came, but were able to leave once the scene was cleared. CBS News Miami spoke with witnesses to the entire incident, who expressed fear and shock at what had happened near their homes, including one man who showed how his walls were riddled with bullets from the shootout.
